LOL - The reverse torx got me 2. I said the same SOB pretty much the same lol. I have a good check list and cardboard but sadly I loaned my torque wrench & reverse to my son and out of thread lock but nothing has been out yet so again thank you for the pre-kickoff tool gathering.

-If for what ever reason you don’t have a 17mm Socket and/or ratchet, refer to the socket wrench in trunk, normally used for spare tire-I believe they made it to fit idle pulley in case belt suddenly breaks while driving.

My water pump basically shredded internally. When I drained the coolant (as I was installing a new pump) 5 round bearings came out into the drain bucket. I don't know how many bearings these pumps have in them but I hope I don't have any more bearings floating around in the cooling system. Does anyone know how many total round bearings there are in these pumps? My car is a 2000 CLK 430 (M113). I plan to finish the job in the next couple of days. Thanks!

just wondering how did you bleed the air out of the system afterwards? did you just run it with the coolant reservoir cap open?

+illstplaya Once the overflow bottle is refilled turn the heater on high and start the car... leave the cap off the overflow...keep topping off until the level no longer drops and the car reaches normal operating temp, and the heater is blowing hot air in the interior..then replace the cap, done

Hello, I have a 2002 C320. I need to buy a torque wrench and looks like I need 2 torque wrench where one will allow me to torque the low torque value and the other one will let me torque the higher value (bigger bolts). This is the only part I need that is confusing me and I don't want to to mess it up at the end. Please help!

Great video thank you. I have a 2004 c240 4matic and “think” my engine noise is a bad water pump/pulley. No codes or CEL but a very noticeable clicking type noise that is louder on acceleration but comes and goes but usually persists at idle. How can I test if my noise is actually a bad water pump / pulley??? Drove the car 400 miles and no issues with it but know sometethjng is wrong and needs repair Thank u

Did you fix the clicking noise? Was it the water pump? I know this is an old post but I think I have the same noise. When your idleing everything is fine, but the faster you accelerate while driving, the faster the noise gets. I'm hearing this on a 2000 clk 430.

@@ricky-sanchez i still have the sound coming from the water pump pulley. its fine when i'm driving 30+ MPH but when driving slow and touching the gas you can hear the rattle sound. i took off my belt and was able to spin the pulley and could definitely hear it making noise when turning it by hand. i've had the slight noise a year now and its just started to get worse and occur more often. i bought a new pump and will get it replaced in the next month...

Detailing you can use a toothbrush and a lot of time. engine degreaser, and The one thing I use a lot on engines is foaming tire cleaner..it won'y hurt the wiring or rubber hoses, and cleans the plastics really well..I get torque specs from the factory service manuals ..here.. workshop-manuals.com/mercedesbenz/

just so you know to loosen the belt tensioner, the bolt is actually southwest of the screw you used. its a 17mm and won't ever get undone and is the proper way to relieve tension on the belt

There is also a small hole ,stick a Allen wrench or skinny rod in it and it will lock the tensioner in the wide open position so so can remove it with both hands

The “wax” paper is treated with anti corrosion chemicals. I use it to keep sensitive tools from rusting. Save it!

I know you don't want the bolts come loose but they don't come with any thread lock from manufacture, in fact I would Anti-Seize them,,, my reason is that I tried to replace the thermostat on my 04 s430 and one bolt broke off so now I have to try to drill it out, am I wrong? what are your thoughts

Years ago a Benz. specialist told me to threadlock the bolts on any part attached to the engine for 2 reasons...obviously locking the bolt from vibration, but also to keep the bolts from seizing

I thought thread lock kind of glues the bolts in for vibration therefore to take them out its a pain unless you heat them up, am I wrong? ok thanks for the reply, ill try to drill mine out today

Alfredo Azure G There are 2 types of threadlock..the blue is normal strength , and prevents seizing as well as locking the bolt. The red is permanent strength and requires heat to remove

depending on the tools you have , you can use a closed end box wrench (12 point) Or use locking pliers on the socket since there is no room for the socket wrench handle under the pulley

Hey man thanks for the video you kind of had me cracking up about the reverse bolts. Anyway I bought a 2000 Mercedes E3 20 And I have had it for about a year and the tensioner assembly Needed to be replaced because Belt broke, etc. instead of replacing the tensioner assembly I first just tried replacing the pulley which in turn broke my coolant pulley which is wobbling all over the place. So now I have to replace my water pump. And I do not know much about cars I’m learning this as I go and I’m very nervous about replacing the water pump but I cannot afford a mechanic. If I was able to replace the tensioner assembly By myself do you think I’m able to do this by myself?

yup...just follow along ,,keep track of which bolts go where ..make a cardboard map for them . and don't overtighten them . Most people get into trouble overtightening bolts and stripping them .

+rosharky original pump with 70k miles.. the pulley was loose which allowed the belt to pull on the water pump at an odd angle, which I assume is why it failed.. seems way to early for a pump to go bad.

2000 E430 (M113 V8, I believe), This is a terrific video. I have just a few questions. My fan is attached to the threaded water pump. 1) Any idea how to get the fan off the pump? 2) the other videos I saw required the radiator be removed to change the WP. I have changed the radiator before. It was a pain that I would not look forward to again. Once again, great video.

The 4 10mm bolts on the fan pulley should allow you to pull the whole fan off including the pulley

Just a quick note .. I'm wrong . you do need a fan clutch tool to remove the mechanical belt driven fan . I was thinking of something entirely different . Most auto parts stores will rent you a fan clutch removal tool that slips behind the pulley to hold it in place . then a (24mm I think ) wrench to loosen the bolt

it was my alternator pulley bearing. i pulled out the alternator and had the bearing and brushes all replaced for 125 bucks and put it back in --- no more noise, all good!

I just had a belt tensioner go out ,tore up the belt to ..right in the bank drive thru...don't wait ,I knew it was going out because it makes a clicking sound..I just put it off for a while

I always had 50/50 chance of success or failure using regular sockets on E-torx bolts prior to discovering it was actually a completely different socket set required. The smaller the head size the greater the chance of stripping it though.

Getting the fan off is the hardest part of this job if you don’t have the right tools. I would love to see a demonstration on exactly how to do that and the tools used. Your normal wrench, will not fit between the water pump pulley and the 4 bolts holding the pulley. Which makes this job a lot harder than removing the 18? Bolts and couple hoses.

You can do this job without removing the fan at all .Just the belt tensioner and idler pully is all you need to get out of the way

I bought a Graf pump. Low quality compared to oem. Had to sand down water inlets to get a good seal at the hoses. Had big mismatches from the casting. Also very rough finish from their sand blasting the pump.

If there is a rubber seal that comes with the kit. You are not to use any kind of gasket maker or permatex. You should not use gasket maker or permatex on any water pumps that have a rubber gasket. You take a bigger chance of it leaking in the end. All you need to do is clean all the mating surfaces properly and you should be good. And the reason why you do not use permatex on systems with a rubber seal is because over time the permatex can disintegrate and contaminate the cooling system.

@@youandiryan That's right ,leave that stuff alone.lf he ever has to do this again that gasket maker will cause him to he scraping that stuff for hours to get it clean and the tiny pieces gets all over everything ...it's completely a mess and not needed. That gasket works ,if you want to do anything g grease it with silicone grease very lightly before you install it to preserve the rubber

if you mean the electric fan .. it is likely there is an air pocket in the cooling system around the temp sensor. Squeeze the hoses while the car idles ..you can often pump the air bubble out by squeezing the hoses. You can also jack up the front of the car on the coolant reservoir side to ensure it is the highest point in the cooling system .. then while idling the air will rise to the reservoir and be released

it would have to be pretty bad to cause an engine vibration , but it is possible. While the engine is running use a long screwdriver placed against the non moving body of the pump and put your ear to the other end ( handle) of the screwdriver . If the pump is bad you will hear it amplified through the screwdriver

The lbs is the torque or force applied to the bolts . the torque generally corresponds to the size of the bolt . If you grad you socket wrench nearer the middle instead of at the end of the handle , you will usually be able to keep from torquing the bolts too tight

My new water pump I pick it up tomorrow at O’Reilly’s I’m really nervous because I’m not a mechanic and I’m really just going off your video. You can use a 12 point closed end wrench on the torx bolts. They fit like a glove. What I use in cases I don't have a torx socket

That is incorrect. The 96-97 have the M104 engine which is a DOHC straight or L6. The 98-05 E320 has the M112 V6 which is this engine. I have spent too many years as an MB tech to let that bad information slide.

Scratch that about the tamper proof bs. I discovered that it takes a 17mm socket outside the pully at about the 7 o'clock position on the tentioner itself. Its hard to see because of the belt but easy to get to. Otherwise the same.
