Mercedes ML Tail Light Installation (W164)

These lights were nice, but a little too dark for my preference so I ended up returning them and installing OEM LED tail lights that I found for a great deal on eBay. I am going to be taking those lights apart and painting the inner housings for a darker look. My old tail lights are for sale if anyone is interested.

Red signals? Do you have eny problem with the police, becouse they are suppose to be yellow

Die rich or die trying Not true in the US. Most mercedes with LED lights in recent years have red signals, even if the European version has yellow ones.

You should have swapped those seals. The W164's are notorious for poor taillight seals causing leaks that pool in the auto door motor recess and fry it. Happened to me.

good to know, i’ve actually swapped these lights for oem led ones and replaced em after, but didnt know they were prone to this

The ML series from 2006 til 2010 had the tail light seals installed incorrectly at the factory causing water to enter the back of the car which leads to circuitry damage of several components including the SAM. The seal should have been attached to the body of the car rather than to the tail light. Mercedes does not acknowledge this issue. I have filed a complaint and they deny this is widespread issue suggesting it is an issue with my sole car and this problem is not under warranty. Basically, they are not backing up their faulty product.

I bought the same LEDs they have but on the display it shows me brake light on the right and left replacement light active. However, the LEDs work perfectly. I ask for quick help Thank you

Hmm. Are the resistors properly plugged in? With the resistors there you really shouldn’t have any issues

everything works wonderfully when you brake everything lights up but with speedometer it shows errors all the time

Musti 246 I have the facelift, a 2009 63. I did exactly what I showed in the video, no coding necessary. It should work for you too without any problems

Just picked up a 08 ml63 and I’m loving it! Your car looks great, I’m definitely getting a set of these. Do the 2010 style tails work on a 08 without connector modification or programming?

guitarphil11 Glad to hear it! So I actually returned the ones in this vid as they weren’t fully my style and went with the 2009.5/2010 LED OEM tails. With my early 2009 still being a facelift model, it was plug and play. However, I believe a prefacelift like yours would need some programming and maybe even a later model SAM module unfortunately. That would get costly pretty quickly :(

@@SamAbraham Did you not like them as much because they are smoked? I'm not a fan of the smoked so I would get the red pair, do you think they would look OK? I don't want to cheapen the look of the car if they don't look as good in person. I'd prefer OEM but I don't want to have to mess with modules. I've gone down that road with BMW light upgrades in the past and don't want to have to repeat that.

I got my lights and can't for the life of me figure out how to get the pin out of the connector. Any tips? I'm tempted just to open it with a dremel, I cant get it to release.

guitarphil11 Hmm you really shouldn’t have to dremel it. It’s been so long since I did this haha but if I remember correctly there’s a flap you have to flip up first to unlock the connector. Then stick a pick tool on the top of the connector where you can see the pin you need to remove and push on it. If that is what you’re doing then probably some WD40 or silicone spray is needed to loosen things up

I know this is an old video, but did you get any issues with condensation in your tail lights. I literally have the same ones and the right one has got this at the bottom near the reverse light, do you know if they have a vent so I can get the water to release.

Unfortunately I only had these lights for a few days before switching to OEM LED tail lights which are still on the car. Worth taking them off ur car and checking the light gaskets

@@SamAbraham Yeah I changed these out for the LED ones as my left light brake light does not work anymore on those Benz led OEM ones, installed these working fine apart from this condensation issue.

Yes these were the smoked ones, but far too dark in my opinion. I’d get the normal ones and put a vinyl light smoke tint if I were to do it again. What else would you like to know? I ended up returning these, and bought the OEM Mercedes LED lights

Air Bag Yeah I think the untinted ones would look great on a black one. I had a 2009 black ML63 at one point as well. This silver 63 only has 65k miles, so really no issues. The previous owner did the headbolts already as preventative maintenance (common issue for early M156 motors). Other than that, you only gotta watch out for worn bushings and struts. Heavy vehicle with lots of power. It’s great though, very rewarding car to own.

Samuel Abraham, lastly man as I am contemplating buying these. I noticed that they have OEM style LED versions now. Do you recommend the OEM over these? I always liked the OEM look, but these seem updated. What’s your input? Thanks

Air Bag I think it all depends on what you want. The OE style LEDs ive seen out there seem lower quality and don’t look as good in my opinion. I would look for used OEM ones if you prefer that look. They may be more expensive, but good deals pop up on ebay. I got my pair for only $200... OEM LEDs. Otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten them. I made another video on customizing them, which I thought was cool because I put my own twist on the OEM design

Nikola S I love em and have had 3 so far, mind you there are some things to note. Avoid the first gen (1998-2005), as they are plagued with issues. The second gen (2006-2011) which is what I have, is great, but the tech is definitely old and shows it’s age. The 2012-2019 is pretty good too, where they changed the name to GLE. The 4th gen GLE is even better. Not sure what year you’re looking at, but any of the V6 models should be pretty reliable only requiring general maintenance. I’ve own an ML63 AMG which has the big powerful V8 but terrible fuel economy. The V6s will have much better fuel economy from what I understand. I have had a 2011 ML350 4matic for 3 years now. Bought it at 80k miles and have it up to 127k miles. Amazing car and strong engine. Have taken it on many camping trips, road trips, and I use it as my daily. I would heavily insist on looking at a model between 2009 - 2011 for the best price, the facelift model looks much better and has improved technology. The first few years of the W164 had major balance shaft issues and it's a complete engine-out job. This is the last era with a nice mix of old and modern design and technology. One small screen with all the necessities, leather everywhere, high quality wood. Most importantly a heavy column shifter, turn signal, and door handle. All things you regularly touch and feel are very high quality, something that is missing in a lot of modern Mercedes'. One major issue to keep in mind: This era of M272 engine has issues with its intake manifold. I had to have mind replaced because it failed at 124k miles. This was a $1,450 job to have done and took a few hours. IMO it was well worth it. The car/engine will live on for a very long time, and I had only bought the car for $15k. Overall I have spent very little and it has given me so much in return.

It's really a pretty quick process, but try to have some deep-well sockets on you. Maybe some pick tools for the connectors

Should be the same yeah! Only difference is you may not have to wire that one plug

This video missed the most important step, which is how to remove the pin with a purple wire from the repair kit brakelight assembly. That's the only thing that's tricky. Most of the steps in this video, a 10-year old can do.

Best bet is taking a multimeter to the pins with the car in reverse with the parking brake on of course, and see which one is the positive cable for the reverse lights.

@@emotionX5 That means there's too much "noise" on the wire when the engine is on and other devices are powered. You may need to use a current noise filter, or find a different power source
