Taking the time to properly remove, clean, reseal and reinstall the Intake manifold on my ML55 AMG... While we were in there we rebuilt our fuel injectors and did a few other mods to make things nicer to work on in future.

Great job , very interesting to see how dirty it was in there ... Having no secondary air pump will make it easier to replace the oil cooler gaskets.

Yea, with the EGR and PCV, these things get caked up pretty bad… I’d bet even at 50k miles they’d already be filthy

I’m doing mine right now for a 2004 Mercedes e500. I’m using oven cleaner. Let it sit for 15mins then scrub and rinse. Repeat until satisfied. I don’t think people know how powerful Oven cleaver really is. I found out how good it was when I used it to remove the anodizing from my firearms prepping them for cerakote

Today I just removed the valve covers and deep cleaning as well about to paint the valve covers and the intake manifold as well really for protective coat first then looks lol but I’m definitely about to try diesel fuel for the first time. I did this with my M156 intake. It came out great. I added a catch can to prevent further oil build up. BTW, I enjoy your videos I too haven ML55 and have owned it since 2006. Still runs great. I have freshly rebuilt M113K with headers that I want to install into the 55 one of these days.. A how to on that process would be a cool video. 😆

That all points to excessive crankcase pressure might want to take off that breather from driver valve cover and hook that back up to intake vacuum

Great helpful video! I just removed my intake manifold from my 2004 S430 to evaluate an oil leak, which I can now say is likely from that poorly designed failed vacuum line at the base of the intake manifold. I will use your diy to rebuild mine and avoid spending above $900 on a new one. Was the purple power a superior cleaner? Did you replace the other small vacuum tubes upfront?
@ANDERZENAMG
@ANDERZENAMG Жыл бұрын
You can check my newer videos and see how I did things the second time around, I used diesel fuel as a cleaner and it worked amazing, I replaced any and all old lines. The funny thing is the ‘new’ manifolds are actually just remanufactured units anyway. Thx!

I have a M113 5.0 (306hp) with has the same kind of intake manifold. I can activate the control valve and see the lever moving, but little more. How can I know if my flaps are really working inside? And... what is the real effect of this variable manifold not working in normal driving? Can it show a NOTICEABLE lack of low end torque?
@ANDERZENAMG
@ANDERZENAMG Жыл бұрын
The only way to check would be look through tb inlet but if lever is active they should be. It depends if they were stuck open or closed but in normal driving it probably wouldn’t be super noticeable but not sure tbh.
@ssanmor
@ssanmor Жыл бұрын
@@ANDERZENAMG Thanks a lot for your quick reply. I guess I will have to remove the MAF and butterfly and insert a endoscope camera to see if the flaps actually move. Don't know if they can get dettached from the lever. I feel like I don't have the same low end torque I had with the same type of engine in my former CLK 500. At mid and high rpms the engine is ok. No error codes, etc. As I said, the vacuum reservoir inside the manifold and pipes to the control valve are ok, as I can operate the lever even after many hours after engine off. I have small leak around the pipe (some oil drips to the block from the manifold hole) but I guess it is very minor to be a real vacuum leak in the engine. (Tried spraying gas around, etc. with no change)
@ANDERZENAMG
@ANDERZENAMG Жыл бұрын
@@ssanmor yea that would be a good idea to start with, it is possible for the lever to detach from the flaps internally. That hose having a leak could also be a culprit to a degree even if it doesn't create a difference with the normal spray of gas/brakleen like most vaccum leak areas will do (rpm fluctuation etc). Regardless, a good idea to rebuild it and honestly not too difficult of a job. Atp, with the age of these cars, I think all of these manifolds are due for a rebuild. Cheers and thank you for your support, I appreciate it a lot and am happy to provide any help I can!

I finally took the time to watch the full video. Thanks for it, it's very detailed. However, I am missing one thing: the long reservoir that you revealed (which was oily) and where the cap and pipe to the actuator connects to, that is a vacuum reservoir. But at some point of the manifold there must be a check valve which passes vacuum from the manifold to the reservoir. This way, whenever there is vacuum in the manifold (mainly, when the throttle butterfly is closed), the reservoir "fills" (well, it actually *empties*) thorough that check valve and "stores" enough vacuum to be able to operate the actuator (by means of the electrovalve) for a few times even if you keep accelerating (so no vacuum). So, I am missing that part. Did you see it?

Hey friend I watched till the end my car is 4 years newer than yours just two miles less than what's your kilometers is but I don't have any problem with my manifold EGR hoses intake hoses are all clean I believe it's important to use 91 FUEL and change the oil on time as well air filter it's absolutely true that you said car has been neglected cause I don't see any reason it should have been that dirty inside the manifold but the Great idea is that you clean it you have finished the project that's the masterpiece
@ANDERZENAMG
@ANDERZENAMG Жыл бұрын
It’s always had 92oct fuel and oil changes. I was sort of kidding about being neglected truly, just doesn’t get as much attention as my other three cars lately. It still gets serviced on time and all that. The EGR alone wreaks havoc on the manifolds as far as cleanliness no matter what.

how does it run? From everything I know they help control power band and make up for the heads being rather inefficient
@theinsaneshecklador6598
@theinsaneshecklador6598 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is they are there to change the length of the runners for performance reasons. Longer intake runners make more power at lower RPM and shorter runners make more power at higher RPM. Richard Holdener has several dyno videos on intake runner length (not on Mercedes but other vehicles) that show it.
