you know like i do that this is one of the coolest w123's every built. i know Mr. Brown was a fan too. i cant help but think the sheik that drove the silver shadow in The Cannonball run should have had his heiroom in the back seat rippin's through americas midwest. i think this is one of the to cars in your collection and thats quite a statement considering all the dohc w126 sel's and w124's with m117's. its brown and it makes this car even cooler if thats possible. cheers Vico!! im dropping some magic top prayers!!! cheers

Nice rally car guys, any race or rally car with W123 chassis is indeed rare. About 4 hours ago, a huge tree fell in front of my house and at first glace as the tree was bushy it seems like it has landed on top of my subaru and also my slk55. I didnt care about the subaru but was extremely concern about the SLk 😮, and when the fire department managed to clear the tree, miraculously both cars unscathed from this incident, thanks to my front gate and a wall. The AMG lives another day 😎 alhamdulilah.

I like the W123 series a lot. However I do not understand why this particular build is a collectable. Imo only a factory built W123 AMG can be a collectable.

Very lovely car indeed. To be honest I was about to hit out at you that this is not a rally car. But then I felt this would be very unfair from me. Probably this car has done road rallies, night rallies or navigational events in UK, did it? It is a really lovely example of a W123 that you have got there, you included very interesting and rare rally footage, and to these stickers I have to add: RallyeRacing and Sport Fahrer where two German rally magazines that were absolutely excellent and helped making me the huge rally fan I am now. Sadly both are extinct by now. Well.... As a proper rally car as in the rally scenes in your video, it would need a roll cage, sump guards and more. It would also not be allowed to use the 3.2L AMG engine as rally cars need to be based on road production cars. Indeed what is seen in the rally videos is the 280E with the according 2.8L injection engine. And also these cars were proper Stuttgart works cars and not from Carlsson. Carlsson was based in my home town and only was founded some 10 years later! That the 280CE in your video sports Carlsson stickers is because Carlsson restaurated this car. Ignoring the London-Sydney Rally 1977, where Mercedes was testing the waters (and won!) but ran through the UK importer and satellite teams, Mercedes as a works team built 7 280E rally cars which they entered from Safari 78 until Safari 79, by which time their works efforts were replaced by the heavy C107 450SLC. But you may be surprised that that 280CE shown in our video is as rare as it possibly could get: At some point Mercedes wondered if these 450SLC weren't a little heavy and they built 1 - yes ONE - 280CE (aka 2-door coupé), registered S-DY 6804 to run alongside the 450SLC on some events. This car did Acropolis 1980 with Ingvar Carlsson, Argentina 80 with Andrew Cowan and New Zealand 80 again with Ingvar Carlsson. Sadly on all 3 occasions the car retired and so this stayed the sole 280CE ever built as a works rally car. Strangely Mercedes themselves were not the first with that idea, as a Kassel based Mercedes dealer called "Scuderia Kassel" built 3 280CE rally cars for Monte Carlo 1980, then used them in the German championship and actually won my local Saarland Rally outright with it. But these are no works cars and are identified with a white and blue colour scheme and reg plates starting with KS for Kassel instead of S for Stuttgart. But the funniest tale around these 280CE 123coupés must be that Karl-Heinz Böhmer, who was involved with Scuderia Kassel, recognized the uniqueness of the only works 280CE "S-DY 6804" ever built. Instead of keeping the Scuderia Kassel cars, he bought "S-DY 6804" and brought it to Carlsson to restaurate it. Carlsson in turn only was founded in 1989 by a German BMW tuner Hartge. So there is no way Carlsson would have built these works cars between 1978 and 1980. But as well you see one of the Mercedes works drivers was Swedish Ingvar Carlsson and Hartge secured him as an advisor and test driver and ended up calling the company after him to have a clear distinction between Hartge BMW and their Mercedes arm. Anyway, even if many years later, with the involvement of works driver Ingvar Carlsson, I guess you couldn't find anyone better to bring this 280CE to its former glory. Hope this is interesting and informative!
