I have a Colorado Beige 1978 300D that my father bought brand new and it was his pride and joy. I have owned this car since 1985 and it has at this time only 45k on it. It has been meticulously maintained and everything works flawlessly. It has always been kept in a garage and out of the weather and ALL rubber seals and paint are as nice as when it left the factory. I have kept the miles low on it and only drive it on nice days and never on dusty roads or wet conditions. Without a doubt in my mind this car is probably in better condition than any 78 300D anywhere and am proud to own such a gem

I own a 76 240D Manual and a 84 300D Auto here in the UK. Both are non-Turbo and both do great in modern traffic conditions and on expressway/ motorway driving. Both are running excellent compression and have been meticulously cared for using Mercedes parts only. 3 things to help get your non-Turbo up to peak condition: 1) Use Auto-Rx and Diesel Purge additives to get the oil/ fuel system clean. 2) Rebuild your diesel injectors using only Monark or Bosio nozzles. Get your diesel lift pump rebuilt. 3) Invest in the 5.5 or 6 inch wide MB Aluminium "Steelie" alloy wheels like look just like a black steel wheel but are half the weight. You will save 45 lbs in unsprung weight.

I loved the heck out of my 1981 300D. I appreciated that the climate control system was the newer system as opposed to the Chrysler-based system of the earlier years. The other weird thing about the '81 is the vacuum-only automatic transmission. It seems to be quite difficult to get the shift tuning correct on these transmissions.

For a sick diesel that is hard to start, if you have the battery for it and aren't doing lots of short trips which will kill it if you do this every time, let your glow plug relay either glow longer or glow for it's entire cycle. After the glow light goes out on the dash the relay will actually glow the plugs for a while longer IF you leave the key alone. After the glow light goes out wait and listen. You can actually hear the relay at the driver's forward fender area click when it truly stops glowing. Again, only do this if you need to do it and only with a healthy battery.

In Washington State, where I live, I've seen the 300D Turbodiesels having a 100 times higher survival rate than the non-turbos. With that said, that's the only 300D that I would even consider looking at. The first aspirated 300D Diesel I've ever seen with 150K original miles on it and doing well on the compassion test as well as starting up fairly quickly, and little to no oil consumption was just recently on KZbin in Monterrey, California. That one was a '79. I had a '77 and had nothing but bad luck with it. And every one of the non-turbos I've seen on Craigslist all up & down the West Coast were sitting there ready to be parts cars for $1000 or less. But I did get a high mileage 1983 240D w/ stick shift and 386K miles on it, overhauled at 197K and no starting up fast as a gas engine and little to no oil consumption. No regrets about that.

Last week starter went bad, I ordered a reman and I was wondering how much of a bear it is to replace. Many forums state it's a complicated task. But that's only info I can find on the turbo model d

I pulled apart my 1980 Non turbo 300D engine and found that no 5 connecting rod bearing was damaged probably due to oil starvation. All the other main and connecting rod bearings were good. No 5 bearing is furthest away from the oil pump. Not no 1 as you mentioned in your video. I'm replacing the oil pump.

My first Mercedes was a 1981 non-turbo 300TD wagon sold first by Yanase in Japan. I acquired it with 18,000 Kms and it was a superb car. I deeply regret selling it. It was a diplomat car hence it came fully optioned including the original factory roof steel cargo box, third row seat and a 4-speaker Becker Mexico radio-cassette unit.

Where have all the gas-powered W123s gone? Seems like 99% of the used market is diesels. 280Es were imported into the US in large numbers until 1981, so there should be a decent amount left. I have no interest in diesels but would love to find a nice 280E sedan.

I don't agree that the 280E sold in "large numbers" in North America. By 1980 3/4 of MBUSA sales were diesel. After 1981 the 280E was discontinued, because it was felt that the turbo diesel models offered comparable performance. The only other gas model was the 230, which was sold in pretty tiny numbers in 1977 and 1978.

I was trying to figure out what the video title meant. Then I realized that there is both a typo, and a confusing word order. Maybe saying something like "Is the non-turbo 300D as good as the turbo?" would be clearer. Also, you really don't need to say it's 4K. The few people who care will see that.
