It came that way from the factory , it’s a California emissions engine. That air filter costs about $40-$50 to replace.

I had this issue on my 82 300d, rebuilding the lift pump as well as setting the injection pump timing solved the problem.

I have an early 450sl 1973 that has this same issue... Its a gas engine but when its cold it wont stay running until its warmed up.

Check fuel pump, filter, pressure regulator, injectors, manifold pressure sensor, trigger points, ECU, compression, and chain stretch. points, coil, wires, plugs.
