The Guitar is a National Guitars Dobro Resonator. It was designed in the 1930's because acoustic guitars were inaudible in a dance band and the Electric Guitar had not been produced. This had a special mechanism in the body that in effect amplified the sound.

Happy Birthday to Mark Knopfler today He turns 74 !!! . This is one of their last performances from their Last Tour ''On the night'' 1992. I discovered them when I was 12 y, old in 1989 and I listened only their music for at least 2 years . So many fans were shocked when after 15 years they left us at their Peak, after their last album On every street . For me it was like a piece of life not fully enjoyed . Their music remains a wide river of hope, sadness, melancholy, peace, irony, optimism and humor. '' We know we have made so many people Happy '' they said when introduced at ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME on 2019. Beatiful reaction as usual !!!

The song is about MK’s love to a girl (Holly Vincent), and he thought after she gave an interview and said „ i just had a scene with him“, witch is in the lyrics too, that she used him to boost her own career (Holly and the Italiens). It‘s in the lyrics to, „i dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real, how can you look at me as if i was just another one of your deals“. He had a hard time to get over her! And made one of the greatest songs in the 80‘es with it.

Still one of the greatest love songs by one of the best bands of my generation. The trouble with this song is that the first verse instantly brings the onion ninjas out of the woodwork. Yhe sax is one of the most emotional instruments in the hands of a great player. It has the velvet of the clarinets liwer register but brings it to all registers. All hail Adolf Sax and Mark Knopfler. You should have seen them in '78/'79 !!!

That particular guitar is a 1937 National, style 'O' which Mark bought from a friend he used to play in a band with pre Dire Straits. It was fitted with an internal pick up and cable jack at some point to amplify the sound. If you look closely, you can see that the tortoise shell lucite pick guard, that these were fitted with, has been removed on this particular guitar.

Hi guys, the guitar is a National Dobro. Its a metal bodied acoustic guitar with nylon strings. Now Mark has retired from touring I encourage you to see the Dire Straits experience. Its the closest thing you will get to the real thing and has a couple of members from dire straits in it too. Keep up the good work guys

Nothing else sounds quite like a resonator guitar the 2 main makers were National that Mark uses and Dobro, the Dobro is other laid horizontally and played as a slide guitar, and artist called Jerry Douglas plays a Dobro in the slide style and he is amazing as well.

I love live performances, there the performers can really show what they can do. You show in your "live reactions" how much you are absorbed in it. A lot can be covered up or embellished in the studios - this is not possible live. The real stars appear on stage. Keep it up.😘👏

Mark weote this song about his relationship with Holly Vincent, who broke up with him after she negotiated her own record deal. Mark used a line in the song from an interview she appeared in, "Mark Knopfler? Oh yeah, I used to have a scene with him." He also references a song from the movie 'West side story', "Theres a place for us, you know the movie song."

Mark is playing a 1937 Style O National resonator guitar. It is brass, but nickel coated, with an etched Hawaiian motiff. Resonator guitars have a built-in speaker which is driven by the vibrations of the bridge/saddle where the strings attach. It was an attempt to make the guitar louder so it could play with bands before the electric guitar was invented. This is a beautiful guitar with a unique sound - I have a 1935 model myself.

I'm not sure where you are but I'm sure it's not here so it's amazing how our thoughts and feelings align when it comes to this band. In my mind you have to know how to play an instrument in order to call yourself a member of a band and when you have this, the best guitar player and pianist plus all the other musicians on one stage with great songs it is the best of all time, isn't it?
