Witherspoon, Dokes, Mercer, Razor Ruddock, Buster Douglas, Tommy Morrison, Foreman, Holmes, Moorer, Oliver McCall etc. were considered second tier heavyweights in the 80s and 90s. Some young some old, some former champions others never won a belt. All were dangerous none the less and in today's heavyweight class would have an easy time with very few exceptions I think. There is a serious lack of these kind of legitimate contenders in today's heavyweight division.
@cesarmedina70802 жыл бұрын
Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Trever Berbick, Greg Page, James (Quick) Tillis, Mike Weaver, Mitch (Blood) Green, Tony Tubbs, James (Bonecrusher) Smith and even Michael Spinks gets an honorable mention even though he wasn't a true heavyweight. None of them were great, but they were good or at the very least dangerous opponents against anybody and some of them won championship fights. The heavyweight division is so watered down now and has been for so long. Only a couple guys at the very top are watchable in my opinion.
@SKa-tt9nm Жыл бұрын
@@cesarmedina7080blood green doesn’t belong anywhere near that list. He never fought for a belt of any significance and was only briefly ranked. This one of those fights where the rounds were close, but the scorecards were deceptively wide to me. I had it 96 to 93. Mercer won more close rounds by forcing Witherspoon back and landing more jabs to set up his right cross and right uppercuts. A few rounds could have gone either way. Closer fight than the scorecards indicated. A couple of rounds looked just about even with Witherspoon winning early rounds and not being active enough late. Mercer turned it around by throwing and landing more jabs in the late rounds. He was also more active in the late rounds.

I saw this fight somewhat differently from the commentators! Witherspoon Mercer 1. 10 10 Mercer's jab matched for excellence by Witherspoon's bodypunching. 2. 9 10 The effectiveness of Mercer's jab causing some concern to Witherspoon's corner. 3. 10 10 As with R1. 4. 9 10 Mercer hurt Witherspoon twice with uppercuts, and seemed impervious to Witherspoon's bodypunching. 5. 10 9 Momentum back with Witherspoon as his hand speed hurt Mercer. 6. 9 10 The Mercer jab dominated, and he again hurt Witherspoon with a combination. 7. 9 10 Mercer's round despite Witherspoon wobbling him in the opening seconds with a l/r combination. 8. 10 9 Witherspoon the busier as Mercer tired. 9. 9 10 ... or maybe just took a round off. 10. 9 10 Mercer hurt Witherspoon more than vice versa. - - 94 98 = =
