Well done Keith👍, good to see you’ve got the engine going. We can’t wait to see the boat on the water. I’m also pleased to see you had adult supervision while you were doing it - even if he didn’t get his hands out of his pockets 😊

Hi Kieth, I've followed you every step of the way and shared your tears and joy. What a fantastic achievement, I thought that this day would never come. The big Merc lives again to cruise the ocean waves once again. Well done my friend, now onwards and upwards with the rest of the restoration. I'd love to volunteer for the maiden voyage lol

Keith, which fuel do you use, E5 or E10 or doesn't it matter? Could you also tell me please what grade of oil you use - We have just bought a fletcher 17 GTS with this engine. Needs a lot of TLC - it overheated but not seized so you vids are really welcome. Many thanks.
@Keithsbrokenboats5 ай бұрын
I used E10 but I don’t think it really matters with these engines. I also just used a good quantity 10w 40 engine oil

Hi Keith, can I ask you if your engine had points in the distributor and if so did you find a supplier, or maybe you fitted an electronic conversion?
@Keithsbrokenboats25 күн бұрын
@@fixitfaster my engine has got points. I bought a new distributor cap, points and condenser of eBay
@fixitfaster25 күн бұрын
Thanks, I'll check there.

Brain picking time please! Engine started easily and ran smoothly after new points and condenser. However it has now started running rough on start-up, but then would run OK after a couple of 3/4 throttle revs, nice and smooth. Thought it could be dirt in the carb so stripped and carb repair kit installed - gaskets, needle valve, mixture screw, accelerator pump plunger. It wouldn't start so put the old parts back. Still wont start. Have you any ideas why it started running rough but cleared after a couple of revs and what to check for no start please. Thanks in advance. Regards.
@Keithsbrokenboats3 ай бұрын
Running rough on start up could be a faulty choke (is yours an automatic choke. I’m having issues with mine). You need to check your getting fuel into the carburettor. Take the top off and give the throttle linkage 3 to 4 pumps, you should see fuel squirting out the jets into the primary barrels. You will need to hold the choke open to see down into the barrels when you do this. Idle needles need to be turned in so they just touch the seat and then backed out 2.5 to 3 turns. Lots of small passage ways inside the carburettor that could be blocked. When you had it in bits did you blow everything out with compressed air? Let me know if this is any help.

@@Keithsbrokenboats Hi Keith. Many thanks for that, lots to check. Didn't think of the idle so will give that a go. When it ran rough it sounded like too much fuel - ie choke stuck on (yes it's automatic) and there was fuel dripping into the carb from under the choke flap when the engine was stopped, which initially led me to believe faulty float/needle valve. However it's still doing it with new parts and seems to come from a point much higher than the float chamber. Finally could you tell me how many turns out you have the mixture screw please. Thanks again for your help to date, I'll keep you informed with progress. It's really odd as it started and ran OK at first. Thanks again
@Keithsbrokenboats3 ай бұрын
I had my mixture screws out 2.5 turns Sounds like you have a needle valve issue if the fuel is coming out in between the air horn and carburettor body
@stuartbailey99413 ай бұрын
@@Keithsbrokenboats Thanks for your reply. I thought needle valve but I've just replaced it. However I'll strip it back and check. Also think I may have a faulty coil - the + wire is 12.6v but drops to 9.6v when connected. Coil resistance 2.6 ohms. Ah well, the investigation proceeds! It's really odd as it ran beautifully after the new impeller, but gradually got worse and worse until now. I'll let you know progress. Thanks again. All the best.

test it under load on the water and at different rpm then you get all the demons and real symptoms and errors from the engine. What they show is only the first test😂
@Keithsbrokenboats2 ай бұрын
Yes I will when I get it all back together. But you want to see the state of the rest of the boat 👍
