I know I'm late to the party but, I had success getting those stuck diverter valves out by putting screw in grease zerks into the ends of the cylinder where the pump oil lines screw in. I screwed them in finger tight (don't torque them down to much or you could mess up the cylinder threads up!) in both of the holes then put a screw into the middle of the diverter valve down in the cylinder. I then used a grease gun and pumped away and the came right out. It's an old farmer's trick to unstick a gas powered tractor motor that uses spark plugs by putting grease zerks into modified spark plugs. Yes, it's messy with all the grease that needs to be cleaned up but it worked for me. And thanks for the video it's great!

I took apart both of mine and both of them that end piece stayed in the bottom of the tube and successfully removed both with relative ease. I just soaked both tubes overnight in atf and then dropped the open ends onto a block a wood a couple times and they fell right out.

This video helped alot but also wanted to add I was able to remove the valves from the inside of the tubes. A driver bit (Kolbalt 11/32") fit snug in the valve and using a 12" locking extension, I was able to push down and turn until I felt the valve spin and was able to pull right out. One did slip and the bit was stuck in the valve (making a sort of plug) but an airline to the back made a nice little "air cannon" to pop it right out :)

You can remove a stuck router valve (way down in the barrel) by welding a #10 self-tapping screw onto a 5/32 steel rod and threading it into the valve to pull it out. I got this from the mercruiser shop manual. It worked on both of my cylinders.

Worked for me on both cylinders! However, the screw broke right as I got the second one out which made for loads of fun drilling it out of the hole. Still better than having to buy a knew cylinder though!

Pete. Greetings from Maine. Very helpful video. Appreciate the tips. I was able to remove my stuck diverter valve by buying a coarse threaded stud (pointed at both ends and threaded at both ends with a short unthreaded area in center) at the hardware store . The diameter of the stud was slightly larger than the center hole in the diverter valve and threads were similar to sheet metal screw threads. I cut a broom handle off to about a 30" length and threaded one end of the stud into one end of the broom handle. I put thee broom handle stud end first into the aluminum tube then twisted the broom handle-stud end into the diverter valve. After threading the broom handle stud into the diverter valve I then somewhat gently hit the aluminum tube with a hammer and block of wood --the block of wood resting against the aluminum tube was struck by the ball peen hammer and protected the aluminum tube from damage by the hammer. While hitting the block wood/aluminum tube with the hammer I grasped the broom handle --threaded into the diverter valve --with my hands and held the outside of the the aluminum trim tube between my knees (this sounds more of a contortionist move than it really is). After a few quick strikes with the hammer and block of wood the diverter valve came free. This method avoided the need to use a welder to create a removal tool. I found one pin hole in my aluminum tube before I removed the diverter valve. I am going to try marine tex as a method of fixing it and see if I can salvage the aluminum tube since the tubes seem to be about about $100 with shipping. Anyway thanks for the helpful video. John

Yeah Yeah... LoL lots of suggestions like that... I used a bodywork slide hammer and it was stuck like welded! Salt Weld LoL If it wasn't for bad luck... I wouldn't have no luck at all... This year I had a pinhole rotted through no4 cylinder to the water jacket... Block is SHOT... Maybe I'll post the new shortblock install come spring 2019

hey Pete thanks for sharing. There is a way to get a stuck valve out of the cylinder body. you need long a wood screw 5-6mm diameter. you secure the screw in a tube. You now just have to insert the tool in the cylinder all the way to the valve to be able to lock the screw in the valve hole. If your srew is the good size one turn is enough. then you just pull hard on the tube turning clockwise.

I tried using a screw on a body work slide hammer... I didn't heat it because I figured if it was THAT tight... That was NOT where the bleed down was occurring... I know there was no blockage as compresed air past without issues... If it worked with the screw for you that's great! You're luckier than I was!

Hi Pete, I liked your rebuild video & have come up with a fix for removing the floating piston in the bottom of the cylinder. I made a simple tool for removing the cylinder by welding a 10x24 tap onto a 3/8ths inch steel pipe, 20 inches long, as straight as possible. By hand you can now tap into the center hole. When you've run the tap in 1/4 to 3/8 inch you hook vice grips to the pipe and tap the grips with a small hammer and it pops right out.This leaves the center hole threaded & slightly larger, but acceptable. Hope this helps. Norm.

Wow... what a complicated but GREAT IDEA.... LoL... But if you read some of the earlier threads regarding these inside diverter "Valves" you will hopefully come across the "ONES" where I've mentioned that I tried an "Auto Body SLIDE HAMMER !!! " MINE WERE F'N FROZEN SOLID... STILL I MUST SAY... your Idea is "OUTSTANDING!!!" I wish I had the patience to try it but in my case, the threads would have NO DOUBT heve ripped out and I would have wasted all that time making that tool... I REALLY DO LIKE THE IDEA and am VERY happy as it sounds like you successfully removed those "Pesky Pucks" !!! Maybe I should call myself "Primative Pete" for the slide hammer! Where are you from Norm? Look me up on F-Book if you like... Pete Richards (NY) or just E mail repeteproduction at Geeee Mail... It's nice to have ingeneous friends !!!

Hey Pete thanks for the video. Good stuff. First - do you have a link for a rebuilt kit? The yellowish bushing/cylinder is seized up right against the piston. It won't budge which was probably the issue. Just trying to tap it loose dents the cylinder pretty easily. Suggestions?

Hi, Got a question I am trying to rebuild same cylinder as you have in vid with your help. I removed the end cap first thing but my cylinder has resistance such as suction or maybe spring? is this normal? looks like it slid out real easy in the video.
@repeteprod1876
@repeteprod1876 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the very late reply... Hope you've got it fixed by now... It's suction... probably one or all of the chech ball valves is sticking... with the lines disconnected the fluid should just flow out the open lines.... HOWEVER some suction will still be there untill the pressure is relieved... Just tug untill it ballances out... there are no springs other than the check valve ball springs.

I was thinking of using compressed air but I got it out by hitting the open end on a cement floor. You have to be careful not to damage the threaded end, I put a magazine down first, and as you bang the open end into the magazine the valve slowly made its way down to the open end and then you just grab it. My theory was if you couldn't get it out and had to buy a new cylinder anyway then damaging the threaded end won't matter.

@petergold5701
@petergold5701 7 жыл бұрын
When they are STUCK that bad it's not coming out... I've even tried a Slide Hammer for pulling body work dents! I "THINK" if the back fluid routers are stuck that bad... they either won't leak down or won't work at all... All you can do at that point is change everything else and keep your fingers crossed... BE WARNED those cylinders are VERY THIN !!! That's why they put those steel tube liners in !!! You can put a hole in them if you try and grab that thing by the edge!!! GOOD LUCK !!!
