Mercury 150hp FourStroke Outboard: The Ease of Maintenance

Last year I have done the regular service for my friend's Mercury four-stroke 115, after I just took the video that Mercury printed on the outboard with QR code, I done the whole 100 hours service within 90 minutes with the first time. Sure I know about the four-stroke outboard servicing because I owned a Yamaha four-stroke, something similar but Mercury's design excellent job on this regular job! All the place very handy and as this AD said, it nothing mess up with oil, a huge plus for servicing these powerful outboards.

i find this very helpful. It reminds me of being in the army. They tell you how to do everything. I've noticed some motors have picture locations of where the soak plug, oil, impeller and such are.

It would be a major improvement to put a small access door for the dip stick for checking the engine oil "Every Time" it is used. I just bought a 2023 boat and 150 Mercury four stroke, and it is not real easy to remove the upper cowling as you called it. It would be a lot harder for a boat that stays in the water all the time, with the latch being in the back. Just a small complaint on a great engine.

@@MercuryMarine I second the comment about the dipstick. It should be accessible from the front of the engine and by a separate smaller door. Removing the cowling, particularly when the boat is in the water, is a pain.

No kidding? I didn’t realize a 150 did not have the access door. I have the access door on my 250. It’s great! Can also add oil right there if needed.

What happens if I turn the oil drain valve to much and break the seal?

Its not so easy for the bottom spark plug. Tried to remove the side panels today to replace the plugs with no success. Have a video on how to remove side panel?

The bottom plug can be a bit tricky on some models. For instructions on removing the bottom cowling, we recommend getting an engine service manual. There may be videos on KZbin showing the process, but nothing that we have produced.

Which is the correct prop to use on a 24 foot tri-toon Premier Sunsation 240. I have a 4 stroke Mercury 150 and I have cavitation problems with the prop that is on it. The pontoon weighs about 2350 lbs

Nothing easy about swapping out that 4th spark plug. How about make a video on best method to remove and re-install the 4th spark plug. This might help with a lot of frustration from current 150hp owners.

Where's the thermostat?

The thermostat on this engine is located within the thermostat housing at the top of the engine, next to the flywheel. If you follow the large-diameter cooling hose to the top of the engine, it will lead you directly to it.

I wish the guy that design this engine had to work on it on the water. First you not going to get the cowling off from inside the boat because the latch is center in the very back. Let's talk number 4 plug oh ya it's under and behind the bottom cowling. If you going work on the fuel rail thr bottom bolt is behind a sensor. That just worst design I ever seen. Sorry mercury 4 out 10 star 🌟
