I have a 2018 6 hp Merc. and it’s absolutely great! Starts on the first or second pull, runs quietly, planes my 12’ boat with ease. Uses 1 quart of fuel at full throttle in 45 minutes, so I can run for 9 hrs. with the 3 gallon external tank. Just a great little outboard.

Hello there she floats! I hope you see this, I recently got into boats and motors and am trying to repair a 4 stroke merc 6hp 2007, which has been standing for about 1-2 Years. But as I dont really know too much im having some troubles, theres no spark, (already changed oil, Spark plug and gasoline) so I thought it was the Coil, so I brushed that real clean of most rust, sadly I dont have an Ohm reader to test it. My guess is that the kill switch cables are the problem though, would you have some procedures or tips to finding what my motor wants and or needs, thank you in advance. I do not have the money to let a professional look at it or buy any expensive spare parts. Have a nice day.

I bought a new/unused 2012 Mercury 6hp 4 Stroke at a government auction in September 2015 for just under $600. I haven't used the outboard much. Only for about 30-minutes this year and no more than 3-hrs last year. Tomorrow I am going to finally put a few hours on it as I plan to take my 2005 Alumacraft 1436-LT Jon boat on a roughly 50 mile river cruise. So far I really like the little Mercury (Tohatsu) outboard.

JeepCollector91 it should push ur jon boat nicely with a 6hp. I no longer own this engine and it was absolutely faultless. I now own a 20hp Tohatsu for my Honwave T40!

Just bought one myself. Had bought a 4HP Suzuki and was not happy with the power, but with the 6HP Merc, we are in business!

+Tampa Bay Laser Tag Yeah it will plane most small dingies or inflatables. Have a little play around with the trims on the engine so it planes better

I just got a great deal on a 2015 Merc 5hp 4 stroke last night. The guy was selling it with a small Jon Boat and trailer and didn't want to separate it.. so I bought the boat and motor. He was in the middle of a divorce and needed to sell it. Paid $800 total.. and then sold the boat today for $450. The motor only has 3-4 hours on it. Its immaculate. So I ended up scoring it for $350 after selling the boat and trailer.

Joe Scopa sounds like u got an absolute bargain there. Just make sure you finish off doing the breaking in period and give it its first oil change after 10hours. What a great investment and find!

They are brilliant little engines, easy to maintain and it will run on 12 litres of fuel all day. Thanks for your comment

All_Visual _Arts my first advice would be follow the kill switch wires back and disconnect it for the test. If all else fails it probably would be the coil which u should be able to pick one up on eBay pretty cheap. Report back and let me know how u get on

Mark Adams I have attempted the cables earlier today. Disconnecting both cables. Sadly still no spark. Now im getting an Ohm meter to see if the coil is broken. Thx for the advice! Will keep you posted on any progress 👍🏽

I ordered the tension knob washer and spring. The first owner of my motor lost them in water. So I will replace. Not really sure what it supposed to do. Any input is helpful. Thanks.

Tohatsu makes the small 4-strokes for Mercury.

does this engine have an alternator to charge the board battery?

francisalder as far as I’m aware no I just use a battery box and just charge it up when not in use

Why hang the motor on the outside of the garbagebin and use another bucket with water..?? When you could just put the motor in the garbagebin and fill that with water..?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

un consejo ,yo tengo el mismo motor pero de 2 tiempos( sabes que tiene mucho más torke ) ,no le pases tanto el trapo y disfrutas del motor . For you speak spanish ? 😂😂😂
