The models that carried the Avator motor are most likely lifting it without the battery. You should try the new 20e or 35e avator motor. They are lighter without the battery 47 pounds. They also can use third party batteries.

@RenegadeADV

There are a few issues I have with your review here, first is you fudged the numbers in the narration, saying the Merc drew 5500-5800 watts @ 4mph, which it was really 550-580, At the same speed the Spirit was at 580 watts, which means that they at this speed were dead even, and I suspect that they are going to be on par with each other up to a point, until you get to the maximum end of the power consumption range because the Spirit is a smaller motor than the Merc, only by .5 hp, but that is still 372 watts difference (assuming a direct scale in power consumption) The other issue I have with the test, is that this was just a fishing trip, this was not a test with controls, other than swapping between the two boats, but what is missing here is the fact that you did not run each motor on the same route in the same current and wind conditions which can have a massive effect on the performance of the motor. The other issue is on the top end test on your boat, likely the top speed you achieved is the top speed of the boat seeing as that it did not come up on plane, which means you are constrained by hull speed. What is actually impressive here is that the Merc gave you 4.8 mph where as the Spirit gave 4.5, which the .3 difference does not sound like much, however, it equates to 6-7% more speed and depending on where the wall for hull speed is on your boat those small incremental changes are actually quite power intensive once you reach hull speed which is why I suspect at full output the Merc was faster as it does have a 3 blade prop and an extra half of a horse power which translates into more ability to push the boat which also requires more energy. Thus the conclusion finding that the smaller motor used less power to go at a slower max speed and thus won is false as at the same speed the Merc may have well been more or even identically efficient. What I think would have been an interesting test would be to run a line from your boat to nicks, and put the spirit against the Merc at full power to see which one was more powerful and then at what power setting they were matched on the more powerful motor. Looking at the test you did I actually come away from it thinking the Merc is the better motor for the fact that it got more top speed, which translates into more ability to push against current which is quite important. I also like the way the battery loads into the Merc better, I got to get my hands on each motor at the Port Townsend boat show today, and while the Merc battery does not float, the handle is much more ergonomic and requires no plugs. The other aspect of this is with the Merc battery having a smaller footprint, it means a spare battery or two is going to take up less space on the boat if you go that route. The Merc as a whole is heavier, but the construction also feels more robust to me, It is about a 16 lb difference, well if you think about how much metal is in a 16 lb dumbell, that gets you an answer as to about how much more material is in this motor (although aluminum is ~1/3 the weight of steel) All of that being said, it seems to me these motors are close to each other in value, I think someone could do just fine with either one, they seem to be a good product. It seems to me that really it boils down to which one suits your needs more, especially considering on some smaller boats that 16 lbs lighter weight will make a difference.

@@TinyBoatNation I would also like to point out EP spirit1.0 weighs almost 20kg with the battery too, not so much easier than carrying the Avator without the battery, what video shows about the carrying feeling is just misleading. I don't think Newport is that bad either, EP or Newport they are both Chinese products, at least Newport gets the price right, if I have to spend 26k to buy a motor, I definitely go with Torqeedo, only the German quality justifies such price point.

@@LewisWobbly - Torqeedo unfortunately has a terrible reliability reputation with their travel series - and their parts are still made in China - just assembled in Germany....until they update their travel series they are left in the dust. As for weight - the Avator's total combo weight is significantly heavier than either the newport or eprop in real world application.

Interesting review! However, several of the Mercury features such as the easy drop connect into the transom mount, quick connect battery (no cables), adjustable tiller handle, compatible app, more vivid display, warranty, etc., are all better than the e-Propulsion IMO. Additionally, Mercury has a significantly better dealer support network. I agree with much of what you said...but there are several features and benefits that were left off the stat comparisons.
@nickbarr3105

Tim, the Warranty on a Merc is 3 years versus 5 for the EPropulsion Spirit - and it weighs almost 30 lbs more and $1000 more for less runtime....a big no for most portable boaters. For an extra $1K you can double your runtime with a Spirit 1.0 Plus with an additional battery Mercury made a sexy motor, but they missed the mark on truly serving their customer. Was expecting a feat of engineering for the extra money...and all we got was a sexy looking heavy motor with less real world performance than all its competitors on the market. I'd consider that a bummer for the average user.

@@nickbarr3105 Please don't get me wrong...I was simply saying there are notable Avator features that were not mentioned. Having owned both, I can say the Mercury is more than just a sexy looking motor. While the weight consideration is valid, I think differential (10lbs for just the motor) was exaggerated. Watch the video I posted my wife carrying it just fine. I'm not here to make a case for one over the other. Just saying there's more to consider. Decisions we make are not always binary. I love my 10 year old+ Torqeedo Travel 1003s motor which was years ahead of anyone making these type of motors. How does the Torqeedo 1103 battery compare for usage? Regardless of everything, knowing you can get your motor serviced (ideally locally) and buy various parts for it locally is more important than how efficient the battery life is and some of the other things. But the real question to ask, when your motor is 12 years old, do you have enough trust in the Chinese ePropultion or other new competitors to Torqeedo to believe you'll be able to buy a replacement battery, get parts or get it serviced? I have an official Torqeedo repair center an hour from me. Torqeedo is the leader in these kind of motors. The others are all knock offs. Torqeedo is much more widely distributed than the others and far more in circulation. Around here, there are many different places I can walk in and buy a Torqeedo motor, battery, propeller, shear pins, charger, magnet, etc, etc. I don't have to go on the Internet, hope I can trust the places selling the motors or parts and hope they are in stock and don't damage anything on the way over. There is a lot to be said for all this of Torqeedo!

Torqeedo is now in 3rd place. They are the pioneers, and they are reliable. But they’re behind in battery technology, and overall in modern technology. These two motors will outrange the Travel 1103, and are more powerful

@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 Жыл бұрын
@@TinyBoatNation Even if true, that doesn't mean it's a good idea to choose them over a Torqeedo for all the other reasons I spoke of. All things have to be considered. At the end of the day, most users don't use products to the max and every little feature of them, and what really matters most is if they do what you need and you can get service, and buy replacement parts with the minimum hassle. I buy Toyota cars not because they are necessarily the best cars available, but because I know they are decent, there are lots of parts available and finding service for them is easier than some cars. Torqeedo is #1 in the things that matter to me, and the things that shouldn't be over looked and should matter a lot to most people.
