In todays video my 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis gets an upgrade on its restrictive sounding and performing intake system. I change out my oem mercury intake setup to a less restrictive P71 (police interceptor) intake box, snorkel, zip tube, and filter. You can perform the same upgrade on the Ford Crown Victoria, and I'm pretty sure on the Lincoln Town Car. I use a Spectre Performance Air Filter for the job. This will take you step by step on how to do the swap and air box modification. You can achieve this DIY project with some simple tools and parts, I believe in you! Learn the process and save a ton of money. We tackle this with the help of my daughter. She loves to be in my videos and loves to help any time I work on the car.

15:26 If you chop a big hole in the bottom of the air box, it greatly increases the airflow through the box. It's basically a factory cold air setup. It looks stock from the top and uses the factory air cleaner. It's works before the MAF sensor so you don't get check engine issues. However when you stomp on the go pedal, it makes an unholy wild screaming beast sound. I love it.

I have a 2010 Mercury Grand Marquis with several modifications. I went the route of a full APR intake with conical filter and heat shield. While the throttle response is better, I think using the P71 intake with a K&N drop in filter is the way to go for normally aspirated setups. Drawing the air from outside the engine bay is more important that reducing the intake restriction in these cars. Plus you should be able to get a hold of one for less. Going dual exhaust and increasing the rear gear ratio were my best mods. I got the 0-60 time down from 8.9 to 7.0 sec.

Also make sure that your mass air flow sensor is a Motorcraft. It makes a huge difference. I had gotten a Taiwan brand from autozone. I was short on cash at the time so thats why i went the cheap route. Boy was that a BIG MISTAKE. I kept on getting bank 1 & 2 too lean codes. But once i diss out the cash out for Motorcraft it worked perfectly and never got those check codes again. The cheap mass airflow sensor was like 65.00 and the Motorcraft was like 95.00 or close to 100.00. But like 6 months ltr on got some of those codes back again but this time it was my o2 sensors that had gone bad. Had them replaced with Motorcraft 😆 and everything is working good for all most this past year.

Thanks for the tips, I have not changed the mass air flow sensor yet, but that reminds me that I should probably clean it. I do have the k&n filter installed and I’m guessing and just from experience that there’s still small debris particles that get past the filter media and clog the MAF…but if i do change it for sure it will be motorcraft

I never knew Grand Marquis’ had sound deadening crap on the air intake. I have a P7B and just figured it was basically the same for both. It seems kind of pointless because 1) the grand Marquis has a shit ton of insulation between the engine and passenger compartment, and that would be 99% of the reason it’s so much quieter than the P7B, which I doubt has any at all, and 2) the biggest point of a V8 to a lot of people is just to hear it lmfao
@LoveWhatYouDrive

Hey 👋 thanks for watching! I agree with you on the v8 sound 100% and I could’ve probably chopped off the extra limbs that kill sound, then would have to figure out a way to patch up the holes. Future plans are to get a tune so I can run the bigger mass air flow sensor and the bigger housing for it.

I was just reading up on the intake tubes which are called Helmholtz resonators. Primary function is to smooth the intake air pulses at a narrow RPM range at part throttle. Wide open throttle is a different story. It would be interesting to see if your new intake causes a slight loss in MPG during normal part throttle driving, but probably will gain a few HP at wide open throttle. Many people think taking the stock intake and cutting out and sealing the resonators will be a good idea since they think they are just an intake sound muffler, but it would be a net loss for daily driving.

The Ford computer can adjust for octane. If you ran it a few times with the 80mm opening to the throttle body would it also adjust to the extra air. Or if you added 93 octane gas, which I have done and gotten excellent pick up with and the same mileage, might that allow the computer to adjust the air fuel ratio more carefully after learning the curves a few starts and runs later. Or if you want to spend on bigger injectors or P71 injectors if they are of higher fuel output. Along with the 93 octane I have added Marvel Mystery Oil 4 oz to 10 gallons of fuel and it appears my pollution system has cleaned up also. The Marquis is 2003 with 145,000 miles. It has had the the P71 intake manifold change out since the all plastic Marquis intake manifold did it's usual leaking into a couple of cylinders. Thanks for this video. I will try the P 71 air intake and see if I can keep the additional costs down or unnecessary.

Mechanic here. I've seen on these cars where the engine light has been disabled for everything but hard codes by sneaky bad mechanics. You'd need a nice expensive scan unit to see what the PCM is hiding and change things. I also own a 2002 MGM and mine does not have the helmholts resonators on the intake lucky me but if you're inclined you can cut them off and the local hardware store has the caps and resins you need to fill the holes. Lower airbox though you're still stuck if you want to keep the snorkel I don't recommend dremmeling it out. As far as possible codes newer vics and such have to have their fuel adaptive values reset to let it relearn higher airflow especially with electronic Throttle Body cars (my 2002 is cable not electronic). Also your ABS module is on its way out if what I saw on your freeway pull keeps happening with the warning lights. Hope this helps any wonderers! Oh and the cable driven cars can take Mustang BBK intake to manifold elbows!
@LoveWhatYouDrive
@LoveWhatYouDrive 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the information! I appreciate you taking your time and writing. Drive by cable seems like a simpler straight forward design. More wires and sensors, more problems in my opinion, unless left alone. Is abs module responsible for more than just abs?

Hi, I did some research. So, I have a 2006 lincoln town car. I looked up on advance auto parts. And when I looked up my mass airflow sensor for Motorcraft and for the crown vic police a.k.a. p71. It shows the same part number for both. So, I don't think it's the mass airflow sensor. It probably needs a tune. I saw on a video that you need to cycle the key in the on position so that the computer can re learn. And then turn it on and let idle for about 10 to 15 mins.
@LoveWhatYouDrive
@LoveWhatYouDrive Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info, I saw another guy I forget his channel that splices in a bigger maf, I believe it was a 9 prong or something along the lines. It I also forgot about the relearn procedure…maybe I will try that out here shortly and see what it does. I’d rather use the p71 lid and bigger maf airflow sensor housing then my original Mercury one! Thumbs up man I appreciate the input…of course I’ll record it and make a video!

I had actually done the next best thing with the stock box without swapping the bottom or going totally overboard cutting a giant hole in the box as I've seen before: the stock opening (without the snorkel) is not only smaller in diameter than the P71 but also is basically a stubby tube intruding on some internal space. So not only is the police box dimensionally bigger, the inside is completely gutted for maximum air flow and the opening is completely unobstructed. So what I did to maximize the airflow of the smaller box is not only remove the snorkel (which is yet another sound deadening device in itself since it's a reducer hence the "trumpet" nickname), I trimmed as much of the excess "tubing" at the opening until it was flush with the wall of the box, basically gutting it without altering the opening and still allowing the snorkel to be installed despite the reduction in bracing for it (basically what the tubing is, but for "max performance" you won't be using the snorkel anyway). You'd be surprised how much extra plastic is just sitting there taking up space and I'd say you'd get a 25% increase in airflow removing both the snorkel and the bracing for it plus it doesnt look completely out of place if you keep your chop job clean. You don't even need a dremel or cutting wheel (though you could to make it easier), you can use a pair of wire cutters/pliers and smooth the excess with sandpaper if you want to make it more presentable now it's much easier to just integrate the cop box lower onto the regular upper, but they changed the tabs on the box somewhere along the line of 03-11, and I have a police box but the box i have must be earlier because it has completely different mounting clips than my 08... so I just made the most of what I have and when I can tune my car I'll put the cop box on at that time as for why the cop box won't work with the regular panthers is the specs on the computer itself. You can unplug the battery and let it reset but the computer will still look for that 70mm MAF. The computer reset method will compensate for whatever you do to the intake box, you could chop basically the entire lower box if you wanted and leave just the filter attached to the top box if you really wanted to maximize airflow (I've seen it done, it isn't pretty but it's basically next best thing to a DIY "CAI"). But that upper box is the important part because of that MAF opening, you could literally chop off the MAF tube for the stock box and glue it to the cop box for maximum airflow without a tune if you want a rough and dirty setup for the fun of it. But it's easier to just get a used $100 tuner (that was paired to a Ford before since you can reuse tuners as long as they're unmarried and used on the same manufacturer ECU), pay another $100 for a tune for your car, then swap the entire box for the best result. Then of course for max gains you go dyno tune but it's up to you whether you save up for that or get a bang for your buck tuner

It seems like this only affects 05 and newer DBW cars, I just had to smog my 03 and had no issues at all with taking my tune off and running the car with all my mods still. P71 air intake, 24lb injectors from a newer flex fuel car, 5.4 f150 TB, and an SR performance plenum with an MMR plenum spacer. Without more testing from a larger sample it's hard to say exactly. Either way buy an ECU from an equal year interceptor and you won't have that problem, and the added bonus of no passive anti theft too, unless you like that.(haven't met a single person in over 15 years who gives a shit about factory alarms)

So, If I go to the junkyard, I just have to buy the zip tube and the bottom half of the filter box... Got it. Hopefully it will come out cheaper. (Edit-- or I'll just get a top half from a regular Town Car or Grand Marquis and use that for cutting up and leave my OEM air filter halves in pristine condition. so, if and when I decide to sell I just drop it back in fro the OEM unmolested feel.) Just the zip tube alone is enough to be worth this mod. I hate how those extra sound deadening baffle thingys that come out of the factory zip tube on my 11 Town Car get in the way of just easily checking the oil.

Hi brother this is a great video! I really like how you work around and solved the problem. I personally don’t own an MGM but your video did give me some insight. Maybe I could propose a possible solution here. I saw the the vehicle run lean after you put the 80mm MAF instead of the stock 70mm, which is an 115% increase in air. What if you change the stock Orange 19lb injectors to the 22lb pink injectors? That is also very close to 115% increase in fuel. I’ve seen people running the 22lb injectors and the vehicle said running rich. So if you can run rich by 115% from fuel injectors while run lean on air box, wouldn’t they just cancel each other and create a perfect air/fuel ratio? This is just my guess and I think it is well worth trying, because a tune for MAF cost more than 400$, while a set of Bosch 22lb cleaned injectors from eBay only cost around 125$.

Okay I did found something interesting: Stock Mercury Marauder uses 80mm MAF same as 04+CVPI. Stock Mercury Marauder also uses 24lb pink injectors. So I guess I’m right😊 the only thing left to know is will upgrade the injectors to compensate MAF able to fool the PCM to run the good ratio? Or will it throw another code above of the MAF lean code?

I have both a 4.6 and a 5.7 parked in my yard. The 4.6 is fine for what it's intended to do, but if you really must go quicker the 5.7 is just in a different league. I was waiting for this problem. Sorry, but I will not do this with my 04 Crown Vic. But installed dual exhaust on it, and use K&N airflow filter. It.s a'' limit'' what can be done for me. I hate to drill som hole and grind away parts. But I have upgrade to Led for headlights. But had to buy the right one. I did get the Luxter with two ships. One for low beam and high beam. Like the halogen bulbs. Here in Norway (EU), we have to show the car every second year for EU contol. Has had none issues, but get comment about the led bulbs. Said that the refectors constructed for halogen bulbs only. Its not caused by the lux, but the beam pattern. There are some made in china with 3-6 ships. These wil not show the right beam pattern like the halogen. With the Luxter, i will get the right beam pattern. I dont care, and will use the led bulbs. Has pics on Amazon. Fine to use when meeting goose on the dark roads. THX for your videos!

yeah I wouldn't bother buying or finding a police interceptor tube. Box yes, tube no. I would just grab my hack saw and cut off the silencers and cover the holes with black gorilla tape. Or do a KZbin search and learn a new skill by plastic welding the holes shut using plastic from the silencers.

Yes also a very effective and cheap option! Thanks for stopping by!

Bad idea. Check out what a Helmholtz resonator does. Primary function is not a muffler. It is to smooth intake air pulses at part throttle to improve efficiency. You will probably get less MPG at part throttle.

Messing with air/fuel is an invitation for problems. I am a Ford Mechanic for 26 yrs I would not recommend this to anyone. Get a sports car if you want sport performance. I am not knocking anyone,but we are happy when people mess with cars as it lines our pockets. FYI we call interceptors “cash interceptors” because the Government wastes more taxpayers funds beefing up LTD into gas guzzling tire eating pigs.. no pun intended. Crime pays as long as the Gov runs it.

I would suggest a junkyard first or one those car recyclers, then on Facebook pages in different panther groups. I’m in about 5 or 6 groups with thousands of panther owners they always swapping and trading and selling parts. Then Facebook marketplace, or OfferUp or Craigslist. People always parting out cars and selling just parts. eBay has a ton of them for sale. If you seen my exhaust video, I got that for $40 on Facebook market place. And finally my intake, I’m sure you’ve seen it was from a viewer from Canada who had it laying around cus he swapped his to a adtr or K&N setup and I payed him $80 bucks for the whole setup. I thought it was pretty good deal, because the K&N drop in filter alone is close to $60 new. Good luck man! Thanks for stopping by!

Hi, thanks for stopping by. I’m not sure what can be your problem but I’ve seen and heard that steering racks are a weak point on them. Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m no expert!

@raq1285 There is a joint in the intermediate shaft above the rack that freezes up. There was a recall on it.
