L6 spin on rebuilding WMK carburetors. Prior to the rebuild the Merc would not start without the warm up lever and would cut out completely while idling. Also suffered a high speed miss as well. An engine only needs 3 things to run: Compression, Spark, and Fuel. Compression came in around 130 psi on all 6 cyl with bright blue sparks as well. L6 Diagnosis = Fuel delivery. Here is the process on rebuilding the WMK carbs and the results. Enjoy.

Thanks Son, I just completed rebuilding all three of my carbs on my 1987 115 L6 after watching your video several times. I come to find out that my fuel pump was bad too. Whoever rebuilt the fuel pump before me did it poorly. They did not install the rubber diaphragms , only the plastic ones. It's a miracle the engine ran at all. Keep up the great work.

Tolerance on those tangs is indeed tight. Rebuild on my 1973 1150 went great. Purred like a kitten in my driveway, no leaks. Got it on the water and it chugged and bogged. #2 was overflowing fuel. Lucky it was #2, I was able to pull just the bowl lid on the water and bend the tangs to get a good seat. Was able to get 23 mph on a 20ft 1991 lowe pontoon.

Last year, I purchased a 1983 Astroglass 165 with a Mercury 115hp L6 that wasn’t running. It has been a long process getting things on it to work again so I try to do that on my days off since I’m semi retired. I just rebuilt the carbs because it was flooding after I rebuilt most of the CDI system. When taking them apart, I noticed that the narrower tangs were put in upside down which would probably explain why the flooding was happening. If I hadn’t watched this video I wouldn’t have known that. Now they are adjusted just right using your wooden board method. Also, as a suggestion I used 1/8” black vinyl end caps that are used on automotive vacuum lines to plug up both of hose barbs on the Back Drag system on each carburetor which is much easier than using heat shrink tubing. They fit a bit snug so you might want to go up to 1/4” size on those. All that I now have left to do is add new oil seals to the lower unit. As always, I enjoy watching your informative videos. They are usually very helpful and informative too, so keep up the good work!

Hey Son, Just want to say thank you sir! My Tower of Power is running like a beast! She no longer has the hard start issues and does not stall in lower gear. She takes off without hesitation frome the holeshot now too. Only issue I have now, is my top carburetor has a steady drip of fuel from the main jet screw cap. I used the black gasket from the rebuilt kit, but makes me wonder if maybe I should look for a cork gasket like the one used for the carburetor bowl. Strange that was not provided in the kit. Either way, I am still a winner on my book!

The idle screws change the amount of air flow and vacuum of fuel from the main jet. Thus the further out (ccw) the more fuel you get dripping BEHIND the butterflies to keep the ignition running at low speeds. It is critical to balance your carbs so each cylinder gets equal amounts of fuel for combustion. Son

@@MerCSonL6 my problem is I don't know if I'm getting to much gas or not enough. My motor cranks fine. When I give it full throttle, I'm going turtle speed. So I will idle the motor for about 20sec to its top RPM, idle it back down give it full throttle and it takes off normal. What could be my problem? Sometimes I can give it full throttle after the idle, and it will still go turtle speed. Idling it helps sometime, sometime it doesn't. Mercury 40hp 2 stroke.

@MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 5 жыл бұрын
What degree is your idle? I would retard the timing to slow it down. The high speed is non adjustable. The low speed setting is located to the top right of carb. Boat must be in water. After its warmed up shift the engine into forward gear. To the upper right of the carb if you are facing it there is an idle needle screw. Start with 1.5 full turns out counterclockwise from light seated. Slowly turn in (clockwise) until the engine starts to bog down/stumble due to the lean mixture then/quickly turn it 1/2 turn out to keep from dying. Play around from there until you have if "Perfect" them make one last 1/4 yurn out. Let me know. Son

@MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 4 жыл бұрын
I did not. It will not get damaged. If it would make you rest easier, you can remove the Welch plug (be very careful not to strip) directly beneath the carb. Once open you will have direct access to the main nozzle. You can unscrew that with a flat head which will relieve the pressure on the plastic for easy removal. Again, be very careful not to strip the plug or the main nozzle. I've found that over the years removal of these items is more grief than what its worth. Hope this helps. Son

@@1998jmusmc if you look into the bottom of the side bowl you'll see a hole.... it tunnels horizontally across to the main jet. You want to force an acetone aerosol in that hole. Long story short, Got it home have replaced primer, all fuel lines, filter, pump and rebuilt carbs. It starts now and runs for about 2 min then dies. So my fuel pump wasn’t getting vacuum from the engine. I cut those out in the correct location in the gasket with an exacto knife. It’s running perfect now! Greetings MerC son! So today I started up the Mercury 900 90hp. And same thing gas leaking idle was high and fluctuating. When I was watching your carburetor rebuild video I noticed that my float cover was missing the float vent port. I recall that you sealed your carburetor off with heat shrink tubes and mentioned it would be a preference. I sort of understand how the gas flows into the float chamber and passes through the top as the float raises and pushes the needle open for fuel to enter the carburetor. And if the float chamber is constantly full the fuel will continue to over flow out of the carburetor as well as the needle getting stuck will over flow the carburetor. Will sealing off the float vent correct the problem or is the float vent adjustable upon backing it out?
@MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer: no. The tangs are set too low. Pressure test like I did in the video and it will be perfect every time. @MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 5 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a fuel delivery issue if you have to partial choke to keep running. Have you rebuilt the carbs? The fuel line should be completely clear from the tank, through the fuel pump, into the carbs. Check for blockage or leaks (if fuel can get out, air is getting in. With a 1350 the inside diameter of the fuel line should also be at least 3/8th. Hope this helps. Let me know. Son

I have not rebuilt carbs but have replaced fuel diagrams and lines and barbs... seems to get it plenty of fuel. Would carbs impact operation that much?
@MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 5 жыл бұрын
@@lawdawg1813 they all should be sync'd to impact equally. I would discontinue to choke while idling due to the bottom 2 cylinders potentially not getting fuel (choke only activates top 2 carbs). A carb rebuild will likely solve your problem. Choking or increasing rpms to get it to idle forces the fuel into the crank. The engine, when everything is correct, will idle with the no choke, all carbs completely closed, with the timing retarded. A 1971 1350 was one of the first engines to receive the direct charge powerhead before they changed the internal porting which means it should idle and start easier (more of a throaty idle). Also what is back pressure on the exhaust?
@MerCSonL6
@MerCSonL6 5 жыл бұрын
@@mercuryoutboardguy1939No worries. -2 ATDC refers to the precise degree on the flywheel the spark on #1 cylinder hits as it cycles thru a revolution. When the piston is at the exact top of the cylinder (b4 it starts going down) this is called TOP DEAD CENTER or TDC. BTDC = before top dead center and ATDC = after top dead Center. The timing advances to BTDC as you Throttle the engine. The lower the timing the slower your engine goes and you eventually start running into ATDC AFTER you hit zero degrees. Which I refer to ATDC as a negative integer. Back pressure: under operating conditions your engine has water that travels up thru the exhaust system and the post combustion gases have to force it's way down thru the water into the lower unit and out the thru hub exhaust system (your prop). This creates negative pressure on all cylinders causing them to work harder to push the exhaust out. Son

@@MerCSonL6 well got it all done, it was rough at first still wouldn't stay running had to keep the throttle idler lever up high to keep it running but after awhile of running it I was able to slowly lower that lever and adjust the idle screws in each carb and it finally quieted down and idled on its own sounded pretty good, haven't tried it on the water yet but hopefully all goes well. Never in my 43 years have I even looked at a boat engine til now lol so far so good.

Ok so I need some help on my issue. I unbolt the bottom carb bowl top and lift the top out of bowl and put to the side and no fuel comes out. The lines are full and you can see large air bubbles leading from that bowl top through the line and into the next bowl. When I unbolt the next bowls top and lift it out, all the fuel THEN rushes through the bottom carbs bowl top. Is the needle and float set correctly? I don’t think it is as that bottom carb doesn’t seem to get the right amount of fuel. My main symptom I’m trying to fix is I have to pump the primer bulb to keep boat at full speed. Low speed it seems good but once I get up over 30mph for more then a minute it will bog down and want to stall unless you Pump the bulb. I was thinking fuel pump but after witnessing the bottom carb issue I’m leaning more on needle not set correctly… it’s all apart at the moment so I’ll try anything you suggest lol. Fuel pumps are NLA so I’d have to get a second hand one and dude around here wants $275 for a fuel pump.

@@MerCSonL6 this is something I have never really thought about. Would have saved me hundreds in parts for trouble shooting if it is the problem. I will take a look after this weekend but in the meantime is ever so slightly opened the tangs on the bottom carb to see if it doesn’t help fill that bowl. I hope with a full bowl majority of the time, the engine should run at full speed for more then a minute lol. Will know more after this weekend. I’ll post back

@@MerCSonL6 welp. Had it out in the water. Still doing the same thing and bugging out at high rpm over a minute. Pump the ball and it works again. New issue is the top carb is leaking fuel out of the mouths of the carbs. I’m home now and took the carbs off again and attempted to reset the needle and float flanges. Top one was not level with the prongs. Looks like the inner tang is slightly bent. I attempted to readjust to get as close to level as I can. I tried your method with the peice of wood too see if it seals and all seems well now that I’ve adjusted it. Will know more after I reinstall everything now. I checked the feeder tube from the tank for restriction and there is none. The ball that you pump is broken. I can feel something bouncing around inside the ball. Might be the bottom check valve. Pooched. Got a new one. Hopefully that was the issue the whole time!!!

Had it all installed yesterday. Went to Canadian tire and got a new line and primer bulb. Get it home and install it only to find it’s defective. Won’t hold the fuel in the line. Pump and pump and nothing. Took off the part that goes to engine and used screw driver to press the barb in to allow fuel to pass. Pump the bulb and nothing comes out but air! This is the type of crap that make a guy wanna give up lol. Work today then I’ll return this primer bulb for another new one.
