Last year, I purchased a 1983 Astroglass 165 with a Mercury 115hp L6 that wasn’t running. It has been a long process getting things on it to work again so I try to do that on my days off since I’m semi retired. I just rebuilt the carbs because it was flooding after I rebuilt most of the CDI system. When taking them apart, I noticed that the narrower tangs were put in upside down which would probably explain why the flooding was happening. If I hadn’t watched this video I wouldn’t have known that. Now they are adjusted just right using your wooden board method. Also, as a suggestion I used 1/8” black vinyl end caps that are used on automotive vacuum lines to plug up both of hose barbs on the Back Drag system on each carburetor which is much easier than using heat shrink tubing. They fit a bit snug so you might want to go up to 1/4” size on those. All that I now have left to do is add new oil seals to the lower unit. As always, I enjoy watching your informative videos. They are usually very helpful and informative too, so keep up the good work!

Hey Son, Just want to say thank you sir! My Tower of Power is running like a beast! She no longer has the hard start issues and does not stall in lower gear. She takes off without hesitation frome the holeshot now too. Only issue I have now, is my top carburetor has a steady drip of fuel from the main jet screw cap. I used the black gasket from the rebuilt kit, but makes me wonder if maybe I should look for a cork gasket like the one used for the carburetor bowl. Strange that was not provided in the kit. Either way, I am still a winner on my book!

You will need a specific measuring instrument to obtain these measurements in a perfect world. I have found that even with these specific measurements problems can still persist. Greetings MerC son! So today I started up the Mercury 900 90hp. And same thing gas leaking idle was high and fluctuating. When I was watching your carburetor rebuild video I noticed that my float cover was missing the float vent port. I recall that you sealed your carburetor off with heat shrink tubes and mentioned it would be a preference. I sort of understand how the gas flows into the float chamber and passes through the top as the float raises and pushes the needle open for fuel to enter the carburetor. And if the float chamber is constantly full the fuel will continue to over flow out of the carburetor as well as the needle getting stuck will over flow the carburetor. Will sealing off the float vent correct the problem or is the float vent adjustable upon backing it out?
@MerCSonL62 жыл бұрын
Short answer: no. The tangs are set too low. Pressure test like I did in the video and it will be perfect every time. Ok so I need some help on my issue. I unbolt the bottom carb bowl top and lift the top out of bowl and put to the side and no fuel comes out. The lines are full and you can see large air bubbles leading from that bowl top through the line and into the next bowl. When I unbolt the next bowls top and lift it out, all the fuel THEN rushes through the bottom carbs bowl top. Is the needle and float set correctly? I don’t think it is as that bottom carb doesn’t seem to get the right amount of fuel. My main symptom I’m trying to fix is I have to pump the primer bulb to keep boat at full speed. Low speed it seems good but once I get up over 30mph for more then a minute it will bog down and want to stall unless you Pump the bulb. I was thinking fuel pump but after witnessing the bottom carb issue I’m leaning more on needle not set correctly… it’s all apart at the moment so I’ll try anything you suggest lol. Fuel pumps are NLA so I’d have to get a second hand one and dude around here wants $275 for a fuel pump.

When you submerged the carburetor over night, did you remove that black plastic piece inside the intake carburetor? It is right before vavle flap. I am worried that might get damaged when soaking over night.
@MerCSonL65 жыл бұрын
I did not. It will not get damaged. If it would make you rest easier, you can remove the Welch plug (be very careful not to strip) directly beneath the carb. Once open you will have direct access to the main nozzle. You can unscrew that with a flat head which will relieve the pressure on the plastic for easy removal. Again, be very careful not to strip the plug or the main nozzle. I've found that over the years removal of these items is more grief than what its worth. Hope this helps. Son

Hello Son, I was able to remove everything except for the main jet valves on all three carburetors. I think I probably stripped the first main jet on carburetor #1 and after that it was downhill and gave up. So I ended up soaking all 3 carburetors in vat cleaner overnight with main jets installed. That's definitely a fuel delivery issue if you have to partial choke to keep running. Have you rebuilt the carbs? The fuel line should be completely clear from the tank, through the fuel pump, into the carbs. Check for blockage or leaks (if fuel can get out, air is getting in. @@lawdawg1813 they all should be sync'd to impact equally. I would discontinue to choke while idling due to the bottom 2 cylinders potentially not getting fuel (choke only activates top 2 carbs). A carb rebuild will likely solve your problem. Choking or increasing rpms to get it to idle forces the fuel into the crank. The engine, when everything is correct, will idle with the no choke, all carbs completely closed, with the timing retarded. Also what is back pressure on the exhaust?
@MerCSonL65 жыл бұрын
@@mercuryoutboardguy1939No worries. -2 ATDC refers to the precise degree on the flywheel the spark on #1 cylinder hits as it cycles thru a revolution. When the piston is at the exact top of the cylinder (b4 it starts going down) this is called TOP DEAD CENTER or TDC. BTDC = before top dead center and ATDC = after top dead Center. The timing advances to BTDC as you Throttle the engine. The lower the timing the slower your engine goes and you eventually start running into ATDC AFTER you hit zero degrees. Which I refer to ATDC as a negative integer. Back pressure: under operating conditions your engine has water that travels up thru the exhaust system and the post combustion gases have to force it's way down thru the water into the lower unit and out the thru hub exhaust system (your prop). This creates negative pressure on all cylinders causing them to work harder to push the exhaust out. Son

Do you recommended running an inline fuel filter in between the fuel pump and carbs? I'm wondering if it would add restriction.
@MerCSonL65 жыл бұрын
Install the filter after the primer bulb and before the fuel adapter. You'll be able to see what's going in easier. Hope this helps. Son

Hey Son, Nice video. I just purchased a 1976 Stinger boat. It has the 115HP Mercury. I heard it run at the guys house. It sounded great. Of coarse once I took it out this morning it would not start. I'm thinking about getting the carb kits. What is the best Kit? And where did you get yours? Im going to check compression tonight before I buy anything.
@repentanceMeans2TurnAwayFrom4 жыл бұрын
Also any chance I could get the carb Kit Part number?
That's a good kit. You'll need 3 of course. Definitely do a compression test. You 120psi or more all 6 within 10% variance of each other. Hope this helps. Son

@@MerCSonL6 Is this engine worth anything? I couldn't find my tip to my compression tester. I ordered a new one. I did find that the distributor has glued in wires coming out of it. It apparently wasn't firing when I tried to start it.
