Also if you fuel up your fuel tank when the weather is colder and you have a one way vent on your fuel tank when the weather gets warmer it builds up pressure inside the fuel tank forcing too much fuel to the engine

In your opinion, do compression check numbers increase if tested on a warm engine and if so, by about how much is the increase in psi on a warm engine? Thank You.

How does the vacuum actuated pressure reg work with the forced induction motors? I bet the tank was filled and the tank vents closed. Pressure built from a hot day and forced fuel into the vent can. Its kind of a funny thing, people are going to be blaming the black motors when its actually a boat problem most likely.

Some new fuel tanks have one way vents that let air into the fuel tank but not out of the fuel tank. Thus causing pressure to build up with the vent open

How to remove any water that may have gotten in the fuel on mercury 150? The engine won’t start now, the filter is replaced but no changes, it’s a bayliner 190 boat, about 6 years old

Hey i have a merc 1998 150hp xl offshore edition (2-stroke). we broke down last week and were trying to start it. Took the cover off and noticed a fuel vent spraying out gas when we tried to start it. what do you think i would need to replace first? thanks.

I would look at the fuel vent in the VST, the float is messed up or sticking or something

Good evening, I have a Mercury 200 xri it bogs down when throttle up, but stays idling in neutral with fuel pressure at 38. When I engage fuel pressure drops to 5, and as soon as I put it back to neutral it's back to 38 PSI. New fuel lines fuel pump regulator. Any idea thanks and happy new year

Well, 5PSI is obviously way too low lol but you only lose fuel pressure like that because of the regulator, the fuel pump, or the volume of fuel. So I'd be looking at that fuel pump first and making sure it isn't messed up, weak, rusty, older, whatever, dirty screen, and then you said new pressure regulator, look at the lines feeding the regulator because that is what controls it. If the vacuum isn't right on the regulator it won't work right and it runs off intake manifold vacuum so if that hose is messed up, it could mess up the regulator. But also you could be not getting enough fuel in the VST, making the fuel pressure drop when the injectors are opened up. You should take that regulator off the VST and put it in a container still hooked up, turn the key on with a gauge on the VST and see how much fuel comes out and what the pressure does. But sounds more like a bad pump, bad ECM which controls the power to the pump or the vacuum line.

hey, thx for the nice video; very helpfull... i have 100 efi mercury.. after turning the key the BP pump work for 8 sec. after that a long beep comme. i changed the 2 pumps, the float a nothing change ? thanks

I have been dealing with this exact issue on 2014 90hp Merc and assumed it was my FSM. I experience what seems like almost a vapor lock scenario where the motor dies and won't restart and has fuel starvation symptoms. Exactly as if I just ran out of fuel. Towards the end of your video when you're discussing the fuel vent canister rising to the up position, is the solution to simply replace that fuel vent canister? Or is there another solution? It seems odd that you’d need to replace that same part for two twin engines at the same time. I’m about to replace my VST/FSM but would love to know any thoughts on this issue. I can run the motor for a few hours before experiencing the issue. I originally assumed my FSM was overheating and did an impeller, but the impeller seemed fine. At a loss here

Well, you really aren't going to know anything until you open up the FSM. Once you open it up and inspect the float, the wire color, and test it for functioning. Most likely its just a spotty float IN the FSM that is messing with you, seeing that you are able to run for an hour or more with no issues, making the problem random. You can see the data if you put it on a computer with diagnostic software, but that's not a DIY at home by yourself thing because you don't have a laptop or the software lol, so I'd look at the FSM and inspect it before replacing the entire assembly. @@BornAgainBoating thanks! I disassembled the FSM expecting to find gunk in the screens but it was honestly spotless and looked brand new. I’ll be testing the high and low pressure pumps today and checking the float for continuity. It is weird that it seems like the pump is overheating over time with use. I am experiencing fuel starvation and saw little fuel in the fsm when I removed it so I think the float may be the issue

Universal codes. I get a IAT sensor code, but the sensor works. I tested it. What else can cause IAT? I got it by the center console blinking. 2-3 i believe it was. Clogged injectors?

Well, it could be the wiring going to the sensor as well, if you get an IAT or Intake Air Temp code, idk what engine you have but it's a temp sensor, so injectors shouldn't have anything to do with temperature, but the wiring going to the sensor could be messed up

How would I know if I had this system on my motor? Mine is a Verado 300 L6 made around 2018. Is what they replaced it with better/simpler?

Take the cowlings off and look. It was mounted to the side of the powerhead. I'm fairly certain all L6 motors used it.

You've got the new system, no floats in the FSM's, just 2 pumps that run all the time. I think they got rid of this system in 2015 or 2016 when the 350/400 came out.

Funny thing about that, this issue is kind of like the float in a carb bowl. If the float gets stuck it'll flood or starve, if the needle and seat is dirty it'll flood or leak fuel. Those ol 2 strokes ain't getting the kind of hours the L6 could do

I've never claimed Mercury's are good. I have said Yamaha's are one of the best, along with Suzuki.
