I remember when I first heard Hebbie Mann while I was in the Marines in 1985 at Camp Lejune.... Man how time has flown.......

I shall never forget talented Herbie and his kind, caring family whom I knew many long years ago in Brooklyn.

Someone needs to bring back the Fender Rhodes piano. Always liked the unique sound it made and you don't hear it at all these days. Ahhhhhhhh. the seventies.

I saw a few people post comments that this was NOT all that; and yet when I click on their page to see their spectacular example of musicianship....there aint shit. I too used to under rate Mr Mann, when I had a chip and was younger...but I grew up and now I value every player for what they have....not what I think they don't have. Great tune and feel here!

For the downers: when you can make sounds like that, then you can criticize the Mann.

Such is the nature of jazz...if Herbie had been playing with incompetent musicians, he would leave them with nothing to work out themselves, thus precluding them an opportunity to shine. That being said, this redition does seems to be lazy, laid-back & totally easy-going, not the kind to easily lend itself to solos. Herbie's Memphis Underground, on the other hand, is more up-beat & finger-popping, leaving more room to properly showcase each soloist's individual's talents. {;0)

too much electronics, not enough pure Herbie

Herbie Mann was a fine producer and one of the most overrated jazz musicians. His sound is ok here but on many recordings it is not. He gets a feel on this one but says nothing leaving the piece for his band to work out. So many great jazz players...his success disturbs me.

flat5: Aren't you too factually "hard" - ignore the PUN - on Herbie who always "manned" flautistic chores HIS OWN WAY? Alas, I do read you favorably in concurrence!
