Especially these days when those in power are wanting to crown a king instead of electing a president of the people. I left my church decades ago when I saw the path of bigotry they were marching down. Five years ago, I found a United Methodist church online that has a former stand-up comic as a pastor, and probably at least half the congregation are LGBTQIA, and found this church the way I did, after being rejected by other churches. In their music, they often perform non-religious songs by artists such as the Beatles and James Taylor that have very meaningful, positive messages. I'm going to send them a message suggesting they consider this song for a future "hymnal". I think it's perfect for the message this church projects. Everyone deserves mercy. In 2020, they had to close the sanctuary because of COVID, so they retrofitted the large space with cots and wall dividers during the Summer so that homeless people had a safe place to sleep, get food and clothing. Of course, those terrible homeless people wrecked the church and burned it down! JK, of course they DIDN'T. This church has a year-around charity that helps homeless find jobs, apartments, they buy them bus passes, just what they need to get back on their feet. Most of those former homeless are working and have apartments now thanks to the kindness of the members of this church. I know that sounds weird these days, a church that actually promotes good will and practices the teachings of Jesus. I wish their kindness was contagious

Thank you to Mary Gauthier for writing this song. Boy George's version does have a little country feel to it as the original recording from Mary released in 2005 was country/folksy. It's interesting that BG is now venturing into country music. His other country song that I like is 'It's Easy.' One measure of talent is range: BG can do pop, soul, dance, etc. with such ease. No doubt he's a talented musician (singer, songwriter, theater musical lyricist) as well as a talented individual (DJ, photographer, fashion designer). Doesn't hurt to have pretty blue eyes either!

Mary, what a great song. I love your work, just read your book. I'm "family" from Seattle, Washington, about to turn 70, and have played and written my whole life. Gigged for years, made some records, all that. Now that I'm older I appreciate great writing even more. There's nothing more exciting than discovering a great new writer. I dig that this song alludes to all the hypocrisies we see and feel before us and lovingly throws it back in its face! Like for instance, we don't need all of the political bigotry that's going on in America right now! We can really just live and let live! I fail to understand why any one side should make the other live by their truths or standards! What little we have left of Democracy is quickly turning into a form of Fascism that will be hard to turn around once it's begun! And really it's begun with the abolishment of Roe V Wade!
