Acts Of Desperation sounds so interesting and I think you’re right that others will bring something personal to their reading. I was raised by a single mother and my grandmother so I really had a sense that I can do everything myself and I really would have thought that I was a confident, no nonsense kind of girl and I couldn’t relate to characters in stories that defended their abusers or settled for bad treatment ... until I was in an abusive relationship myself. Then I became that girl that I couldn’t understand. I would love to see more stories about this shift in perspective because I seriously view all stories about abuse completely differently now. And Acts Of Desperation sounds quite truthful.

I read The Pull of the Stars a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The slow pace and the detailed descriptions create an incredibly intense atmosphere; it's probably one of the most intense books I've ever read, and I could hardly put it down. Definitely have to read other novels by this author! :)

I loved The Pull of The Stars, in my top 10 of books last year and really hope it makes the longlist for Women's Prize for Fiction. I read Lara as I want to read all of Bernadine Everisto's work. I preferred the first half too but overall enjoyed it. I must add We Are All Birds of Uganda to my tbr. By the way, your recent video about books set in the 50s, I read My Policeman by Bethan Roberts last week and if you haven't read that, I think you'll really enjoy it, set partly in present time and 50s.

My mum raised me with the same mentality, after having a horrendous life. It was very much taught to me all my life. My parents split when I was one. My dad Actually had a similar outlook I.e never do things for other, rely on yourself etc.

i read trace a couple of years ago and it seemed so my kind of book and i was bewildered by how bewildered i was by it..so i was delighted to hear your response to it...i thought it was me.

Trace sounds like it had so much potential - such a shame it didn’t live up to expectation as the parts you talked about sounded really interesting particularly about place names. Love how diverse your reading is and therefore your recs - great video 😊

I must, must, must read We Are All Birds of Uganda. You’ve made me really want to read Skin even more than I already did. But should I read her debut first? I loved the way Lara takes us back generations. Ps. I’m smitten with your jumper.

Great wrap up ! I have added to my busy list We are all birds of Uganda, Skins and the title with stars. I am sorry for your disappointment with Trace. I had a pretty good month and need to record my wrap up. I need to read more non fiction as well though I have just finished reading this morning a harrowing memoir. I really like your hair style but I can’t help wandering if it’s your choice or because there’s a lockdown where you live ? Have a nice Sunday !

If you would like to be able to enjoy galleries, maybe you could try a free open uni taster course in art history. I used to feel like I just didn't get it but I had do a few art history assignments in my first year doing an open uni degree and lots of it just clicked into place for me. I feel like I can interpret form and style in art the same easy I can in literature. I also think understanding the context of an artist really helps appreciate their work, so maybe pick an artist who intrigues you and learn about their life and artistic approach.

I'll definitely be picking up Lara now! I love novels in verse and Girl, Woman, Other was one of my favourite books of last year. February was a mixed bag for me! My least favourite was The Seep by Chana Porter - I found the idea and the world building amazing but thought it should have been a longer book. My favourite was Whites: On Race and Other Falsehoods by Otegha Uwagba. I also loved David Baddiel's Jews Don't Count, which though short, gave a great introduction to the themes and treatment of anti semitism particularly in the media.

I can explain how a woman is drawn to "Acts of Desperation". You are brought up in the 1950s with a parent telling you that you are ugly, will never find a husband, and not worth anything. You work your whole life to prove them wrong, even putting yourself in danger. It's only when you realize your worth and maybe write a memoir that you can feel you are enough. Then your true personality comes out and you feel joy. That was my life. Aloha
