This is absolutely fascinating - a massive lecture - 3000 years concentrated down into a riveting hour by a superlative thinker… An infinity in a grain of sand! This is incredible stuff. Thank you very, very much.

That’s a fascinating, intriguing talk. It certainly pushed the boundaries of etymology way past what I thought it could teach. I always thought of the New Testament as mostly written about the end of the world system being preached one generation (Matthew 24:34) before its end. Salvation was at hand and nothing else mattered, not dying relatives or even Mary’s emotional hold on Jesus. He had his work to do in heaven before the kingdom came and she had her work to do here. As the talk continued, I wondered was the story of the crucifixion an exoteric version of the Gnostic concept of salvation. Then I was left to ponder was the story really one of those that should be looked at through Dante’s fourfold method. I think that method would surely support a Gnostic interpretation. It was great to hear Blake get a mention. I love that idea of seeing, not with the eye, but through it. The only ways I can relate to it are to push myself to see the potential in life and people, to understand people’s failings as states they are in rather than their permanent character, and also to move towards the end of judgement and forgiveness of sins. I guess this is Gnosticism again.

Drawing out this cultural evolution through such a wide range of sources is very enjoyable. Self aware rational intelligence does a terribly good job of denying the rich experience of cultural and social values that give rise to it. Interesting to see that beautiful Discobolus sculpture as a dynamic pyramid of the individual, with his perfect top down focus and poise.
