It is because most Indians don't understand Urdu. Most of them speak & understand street language. You can clearly see that in the quality of poetry in Bollywood. In the old days, the songs were written by Sahil, Shakil, Kaifi, Mazrooh, Shailendra, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Anjan, etc. The poetry was first rate & people understood & liked that sort of poetry.
