She spent most of her childhood visiting shrines,had no formal or informal training in music , yet she blithely sang like a lark under the clear blue skies. She belonged to the “ khana badosh community “ who as we know don’t stay in one place .. She did her first public performance at the tender age of 12 at the shrine of Shahbaz Qalandar where she was discovered by a prominant radio producer who after hearing her pure mystic voice got instantly smitten by her beautiful voice and offered her to record a song for the radio. Raishma’s family never took her singing hobby seriously , they were simple people having no grand dreams for their gifted daughter, that’s why right away the recording without telling anyone the whole family moved away from Karachi... little did they know Raishmas first ever recorded song on radio “LAAL MERI PAT”would go super duper on the hit list.. the poor producer had to go on a wild goose chase looking for the “wonder girl “.after the much hunt he finally found her.. She was introduced on Tv during the 60s .. in no time her fans doubled and tripled in number. It’s a known fact Reshma jee always sang from her heart, not for fame nor for money but for the pure joy of her love for singing ..no wonder her genuine folk style won people’s heart right away. As she gained popularity she started getting offers and invitations for doing concerts in and out of Pakistan. No matter how popular she became she didn’t change her outlook .. from day one to her last performance the viewers saw the same simple peasant girl with “Balian or jhumkay “and a “Moti necklace” around her neck with a seedi choti and Paranda ( hair braid) and dopatta on her head. Very few know that Raishma jee was a pure vegetarian , she never ate meat, her fav dish was “sarson ka saag with bajrey ki roti” “Simple likes of a simple woman” She didn’t go berserk making CDs after CDs just to make money as most singers do as soon as they gather some fame , they started cashing the opportunity to roll in dough ., but as it is she sang very few but quality numbers mostly in punjabi and saraiki. Who can forget her beautiful folk renderings like:- 🎹 HAYO RABBA NAYO LUGDA DIL MERA.. 🎹 MERI HUM JOLIAN KUCH YEHAN KUCH WAHAN..( urdu ) 🎹 KHARI NEEM KEY NEECHEY HOON MEY HAIKALY.. 🎹 LAMBI JUDAI.. 🎹 KITHEY NAIN NA JEOREY 🎹 ASEEN PHUL GAYAN AKHYAN LAKEY.. Her song “lambi Judai” was used in the Bollywood film “Hero “.. Another of her hit song 🎹 WAY MEIN CHORI CHORI TERAY NAL LA LAYAN AKHAN ... was sung LATA MANGAISHKER (who is also her big fan) for the Bollywood film “Lakin” Many times she was invited india to do live in concerts there. The Government of Pakistan in recognition of her tremendous achievements honored her with Pride of performance in 1982. She was also awarded with Sitara-i-Imitiaz. Sadly we lost our Nightingale who battled for her life for quite sometime but eventually lost it to throat cancer in 2013... so sad .😕 I wonder what caused her throat cancer ? Well...she did have a habit of chewing Paan though ,which might be the reason behind ...who knows. Any ways what ever the reason behind it does not matter now ..as she is gone for ever but her songs will always keep her stay alive in the hearts of her fans.
