1) I have been out of seriously playing guitar and seeing the new trends for like 8 years now, but what is that sweatband thing everyone uses around the strings? I see that a lot and didn't maybe in '06 or '08 timeframe. 2) I recently found intervals and this is awesome. I played super seriously in highschool then went on a hiatus from metal when I discovered electronic music I liked and I'm reintroducing myself . I had a Jackson dk1 with blue ghost flames and a mesa boogie mark IV I regret selling every day!

That is called fretwrap. It is used to dampen the overtones and mute necessary strings. Mostly used when tapping. Earlier we used to tie a cloth or thick hair tie instead of fretwrap
