Over the years, we've learned about Troughs (both low- and high-pressure systems), Depressions, Dry Air Masses, Wind Sheer, Vortices (I did not know that hurricanes tilt and are not always vertical) …. What else? ... We’ve also learned that Storm Surge is what kill most people and not the wind blowing at 150 mph…. The symbol and letters we see on this screen (beginning at Southwest Cuba and curving all the way up into Georgia) represents X=the eye or center of the storm, H=Hurricane, M=Major (Hurricane) S=Tropical Storm and D=Tropical Depression…. I will never stop watching this channel.

Very interesting to see how the models are shifting in each run. GFS is trending East while the Euro is trending West. Opposite of just a few days ago. I wonder if they are over correcting based on recent upper/mid/lower level wind patterns? Might be helpful for us to understand what each model considers more impactful in terms of steering flow.
@christinecanty54092 жыл бұрын
There is a cool front headed south this evening steering the storm further east.
@sandrabentley81112 жыл бұрын
@@christinecanty5409 No. He said the incoming cold front tries to push the storm down, meaning it comes from north to south and causes shear, which helps weaken the storm. North and North West eye wall would be strongest, it would be kept off shore.

Meteorology is so interesting when it's taught in this way. Very enjoyable and highly informative to those of us here in Manatee county. The storm track looks a little bit like Irma a few years ago and Charlie back in 04, although Charlie was a lot smaller, more like a large tornado than a small hurricane.
@elizabethschneider2972 жыл бұрын
Hello @Tropical Tidbits, typically when storms stay out over the water, they may not necessarily strengthen, but are much slower to weaken. Will the air really be that dry to support confidence in the model of the storm staying out over the water, that it will weaken, and weaken quickly? If the storm manages to get to Cat 4 (or God forbid a 5...) that's a lot of energy that must be dissipated, therefore the storm will expand and become larger, and impacts will be more widespread. On top of the fact that if the storm gets very strong and moves slowly, the water is very efficient at moving the surge and waves, even if the storm were to weaken quickly, the storm surge could still be catastrophic. Either way it doesn't sound good, and I know from experience that strength of the storm is very important. Just wondering if it's really plausible for a storm over the Gulf of Mexico to rapidly weaken due to the dry air mass. I just thought that there was inflow at all different levels like with mesocyclones. Thanks for your input as always!

Great info… I don’t bother with the MSM commentary anymore. I just want information not Sensationalism based on Catastrophe Porn. These hurricanes are bad enough without that
@afh76892 жыл бұрын
Looks like this just might be the big one Tampa Bay has feared for years! Last couple of GFS runs showing a jog to the east into Pinellas County are just about a worst case scenario for Tampa Bay for storm surge as it would place the eye just north of the mouth of the bay with the southern eyewall (winds blowing east) pushing the largest surge possible into the bay, especially if the eye makes a jog northwest into Pinellas rather than move north along the barrier islands of Sarasota and Manatee Counties. For those not local, the last major hurricane to strike Tampa Bay directly was a century ago in October 1921 (this doesn't include major hurricanes that made landfall elsewhere in the state and were down to TS, or Cat 1 or 2 by the time they passed over the bay area after travelling over land). I don't think any hurricane has made landfall on the central West Coast of Florida (so Sarasota County up to Citrus County) in a few decades (1980s??). Hurricane Ivan paralleled the coast as a major hurricane in 2005 bringing a few outer bands but passed much further west than Ian will pass and there have been a couple Category 1 hurricanes off shore also bringing some outer bands.

Why will the north west part of the eye wall be the strongest? I would assume it would be the north east eye wall, given it’s counter-clockwise spin. Thanks for the great content
@Tropical-Tidbits2 жыл бұрын
There are a couple reasons, but one is that the hurricane's rotation moves the updrafts to the left of the shear direction. So if shear is pushing toward the northeast, the strongest part of the eyewall will be offset counterclockwise toward the north or northwest.
