The idea that he turned into a walrus doesn’t go against his play of cunning, since he wasn’t just transforming into a vicious animal, like Madam Mim was, he was using the situation of him being up so high, to his advantage. Madam Mim just got more and more ferocious with her animal transformations, and was fairly creative in spirit, but uncreative in the sense that she just kept picking animals with more and more deadly abilities. She thought “deadly” could outweigh strategy. Merlin proved her wrong by averting every deadly animal she threw at him with a less deadly counterpart, and won every matchup until she finally broke and turned into a mythical creature, to which he retaliated by countering it with a sickness. That’s a very smart interpretation!
