Hanna Pestle - Need
Merlin and Arthur are just starting their relation when Uther tries to force the Prince to marry the Princess Elena. Arthur promises Merlin that he would not let anything come between them and that he's not about to give up on them. But Uther finds out and banishes Merlin.
Arthur stops the wedding with Elena. he gets really depressed and stops eating and just stays in his chambers all day long. Uther doesn't know what to do.
Meanwhile, Merlin has a vision in the Christal Cave: he sees Uther finding Arthur dead in his chambers. He rushes immediately back to Camelot praying he doesn't arrive too late. He manages to save him using his powers.
The next day, Uther comes to visit Merlin who is adamant that he's not leaving again. Uther says that he can stay and that he should look after his son.

I very much believe that this is what happened (exept for the Uther finding them together en banishing Merlin), but I do believe that Arthur cancelled the wedding for Merlin though, it's obviously him who talked him out of it and him who Arthur was thinking about. Or maybe that's just me liking that story way better....

The idea of Merthur began right from the beginning of the series, the chemistry was right there for all to see. in the best sense it is real: a great love between 2 very fine actors who complimented each other so well. The combination could not have been more perfect in balancing each other out. Theirs is a love story at many levels that is real and a parallel to the storyline, and only enhanced by it and them.

Uther's remarks at the end: 'I'm glad...look after him' he actually said to Merlin in an episode where he was convinced he would die [in combat with the black knight] within the hour. He commended Merlin for his 'extraordinary loyalty beyond the line of duty' and Merlin talked about 'the bond' he shares with Arthur. That was one of the three times Uther was genuinely nice and grateful to Merlin.

You're giving Uther a lot of credit. He wouldn't have banished Merlin, he'd have had him killed. I liked it though! It kinda kills me they never admitted their feelings in the show.
