Hi Stu, I purchased the LX-708 April 2021, it was delivered to me the first week of January 2022! Yes it took that long to ship it from Japan. Anyway it’s a great machine with all those features. My playing sounded smoother from day one, as a piano yes it’s a 9 footer but when your sitting in front of it your brain in baffled because your playing an upright, until today I didn’t get use to contradiction. Final the 5 different soundboards you can select is awesome you’ll never get bored of the many sounds of pianos you have in your home. Great purchase I do recommend it.

Interesting to listen to. I heard your review of the 705, and went and tried all 3(!) in the series before settling on the 706, which sounds great in my living room. The key action is excellent, as is the sound (to me). One thing I have learnt since starting to play a year or so ago, is that buying a piano (of any kind) has to be an individual choice, and something that must be played before buying! I have been fortunate to have some very good piano shops local to me in the UK, so have played many before settling. That's obviously the only thing that an online review cannot give. Great reviews nonetheless, and Stu's playing is superb and shows the best from any piano that he touches. 😀

Thank you for all the wonderful videos, Stu. I'm from the Netherlands and after much consideration (and 6 hours in the piano store, last Saturday) I settled on the LX-706-PE. For me, after many hours of consideration, it won from the LX-705 and HP704 based on action and cabinet. The sound on the HP704 was a bit warmer (but also more echo-y in my ears - i have tinnitus) but I found the LX706 keys were so much more fun for me to play! The LX708 wasn't on display but it waa too expensive for me anyway (1100 euros more expensive than the LX-706) and I like that you don't have to open the lid on the LX706.

It's interesting to see some more content on the LX706. I was looking for a piano last year (ultimately settled on the LX708) during a lockdown (I'm from Melbourne Australia and we spent about half of both 2020 and 2021 properly stuck in our homes) and couldn't try anything out in stores, so videos like these were invaluable. There wasn't much content out on youtube about the LX706 then so I had to infer where it stood based on information on the roland website comparing it to its big brother. I'm really happy with going "all out" with the LX708, but I feel like the LX706 is probably a good way to get all of the important features of it (speaker system, action, sound engine, cabinet) without paying extra for the more gimmicky aspects that I like, but aren't necessary (like haptic feedback and being able to modify the sound by opening and closing the lid). I guess I'm also a weird case since I used inheritance I recently got from my late musician father (he was a jazz/folk strings player but had a Roland analogue synth). So money wasn't as much of an issue as it normally would be and I thought I should get something more special.

You bought the right one. I feel the LX708 is much better than the LX706. There really is no comparison in my mind. For one thing the LX-708 has a longer key stick. It just sounds a lot better than the 706 in my opinion.
@Instrumental-Covers2 жыл бұрын
I have played the LX706 and LX708 in a Roland dealer. They sound very artificial in person, so much that I wondered if I had assessed them right. I played them using both their built-in speaker system as well as studio headphones tuned flat. But listening to Stu play the "European" and "American" piano patches confirms once again what I experienced in person. This is no better sound that what I would get in a Casio CDP-S350. The speaker system in the LX708 sounds fuller than in the LX706, but it is not great either, maybe because it has to work with this sample. A much better deal would be a Roland FP90X, which for some reason sounds better in my opinion, despite having the same "Pure Acoustic Piano Modeling" engine... the FP90X shows a "Concert Piano" voice as default, whereas the LX series shows those "European" (first) and "American" (second) piano sounds... somehow, they are inferior in person to the FP90X piano sound. If I had to buy a Roland, I would surely skip the LX series and go for an FP90X amplified with a good sound system. Not related to this comment, but Yamaha now offers the "Hamburg" (Steinway) piano in their CP88 stage piano (OS v1.5) which has the NW-GH3 natural wood graded hammer action. So, Yamaha is the first acoustic piano manufacturer to offer a piano patch other than a Yamaha piano. Kawai only offers Kawai pianos. And I would rather let Yamaha sample a Steinway than getting the equivalent of an old Casio-grade sample in a very expensive Roland piano console (even the Casio PX-S1100 sounds better than this LX series).

I liked the LX708 a lot. I didn't care for the LX706 or the FP-90x. Stu is saying the LX706 and 708 have the same action. I didn't know that. I think the Denver salesperson may have misinformed me, as I was led to believe only the 708 had the long keystick. She had samples of all the various Roland actions.
@nujuat2 жыл бұрын
@Internet Privacy Advocate it's a bit of a "well yes but actually no" situation - while they do have the same action that Stu was talking about in the video (same long key stick), the LX708 has haptic feedback added to it. Meaning that the action vibrates along with the piano in the same way as it does on an acoustic grand. I appreciate it adding to the immersion, but functionally its not going to help you be a better player or anything.
@mr.klunee41032 жыл бұрын
I didn't care for the "Grand" default patches either but I really liked the sound when he brought out the "My Stage" effects at 14:19. It's like the piano just came to life. I'd be really interested to hear the difference in real life.
@nujuat2 жыл бұрын
@@mr.klunee4103 speaking to the LX708 as an LX708 owner (not sure how much this would map across to the LX706) - I hardly ever play on headphones and find the piano much more convincing when the speakers are up loud and you can hear all the little details. Like they do have a little bit of reverb/"ambience" on the default piano settings and I think that's perfect for our living room even without tweaking further. They've also done a good job with the spatial audio making it sound like the sound is coming from the cabinet and not eg sterio studio monitors. So it's a completely different experience in person than just listening to a line out or headphones, and honestly if you're only interested in playing with headphones then I doubt it's going to be worth the price (unless you're really going for furniture value - I've had heaps of people confuse it for an acoustic piano at first)

@@mr.klunee4103 on my RP701, I noticed it was a super night/day improvement when boosting the ambience value a bit from the default. I think the decay is way too fast with the factory settings, so once that's changed the sound is definitely improved.

Thank you Steve! We're happy to hear that you have been enjoying the videos! I'd have to ask Stu in regard to what song he is playing at that excerpt as I do not know offhand. This is a Kawai/Roland/Casio channel. Merriam Music does not carry Yamaha models. They do, however, have Amazon links for basic models like the P125, which they have reviewed. The CLP785 has the features you mention. I don't recommend connecting a CLP785 to an average home sound system, the piano tone will likely sound inferior as those speakers are calibrated just for piano. But you can add a subwoofer using the line outs to support very low frequencies, particularly if you are playing bass lines and drums with your CLP785.

I watch complete videos and so many things to learn for me...Thank to Marriam Music and Stu. This model sounds really good like a Yamana & Kawai. Key Action always matters a lot to professional piano player, I personally like the Kawai MP11SE’s action but this one also look interesting. I would love to try ones. One thing is very much sure that Roland FP90X is a value for money deal in fact it’s portable so good for gigs, I am not a big believer of all this expensive console type pianos because after all it’s a digital. Spending this much amount on digital pianos dose not make sense it’s better to go with the cost effective acoustic upright and if anyone seriously wants to invest the big amount then Kawai Arus and Yamaha Trance Acoustic is a sensible purchase, Very very useful. Thanks! 🙏

The thing is, people's opinions vary so much, you have to try them for yourself. I agree it doesn't make sense to put money in to a large heavy case that most likely is high density composite board, not actually wood. That said the LX708 is great sounding piano. I don't want one, but still it sounds great.

While I see where you're coming from, keep in mind that the alternatives you're listing cost 2× an LX708 and 3× an LX706 at minimum. An apples to apples comparison would be to like low to mid range uprights or furniture only grade baby grands. Speaking personally, my LX708 is a much better experience than the acoustic baby grand at my mums house (my childhood piano), and the acoustic upright at my girlfriends mums house (to be fair they both need tuning, but that also has to be factored into the overall cost for a fair comparison). The author is right that the key length is very important. These 706 and 708 models have a specific somewhat electronic and synthetic sound. But the keys are divine. It's like a good Grand with soft keys. And it is extremely beneficial for the health of your joints during long playing sessions. And it gives you the opportunity to be technical, playing in the depth of the keys. Having a soft and deep stroke at the base of the keys. The sound isn't the best, but that can be forgiven in exchange for an amazing action experience that's good for your health.

The main problem with the LX706 (and indeed all current Roland digital pianos) is that the key weight grading is not linear: the first few octaves are all equally heavy, and then the top 4 octaves are graded linearly. If not for that major flaw I would already own an LX706, but unfortunately I value the function/safety of my left hand too much :) Tellingly no Kawai, Yamaha, or Casio models suffer from this design flaw - it’s unique to Roland. If they fix that flaw in the LX806 and add USB Audio (like they already did with the FP-30X/FP-60X/FP-90X series last year) then I’m already sold!

Hi Stu, great video as always! I don't know what it is about Roland's modelling technology, but to me the piano sounds come through as stiff or sterile, and too much like a digital grand piano sound from a high end keyboard circa the early to mid 1990's. There isn't really anything unpleasant about these sounds, it just seems that other brands have more a bit more depth and the piano sounds "breathe" a bit more.

@MerriamPianos2 жыл бұрын
Virtually all digital pianos have the ability of playing back MIDI files through their tone engines/speaker systems, including the LX706. With that said, it does not have a "player piano" function in the sense that the actual keys move when a song or MIDI file is being played back through the piano.

Thanks a lot Stu! How do you compare the action and sound to Kawai CA79?
@Instrumental-Covers2 жыл бұрын
Action is very personal, and I like both actions. But sound-wise, the CA79 is just in another league, way better than the Roland LX series. The SK-EX Rendering engine is found only in the CA79 and CA99. I have played both models, and the CA99 I played was in polished ebony. Very pretty little piano, a real pleasure to play as far as digital pianos are concerned. The CA99 sounds crisp and clear, with a sound profile similar to a small upright piano, I would say about the same of a Kawai K15 or K200 (although the sound is "stiff" and not as colorful in the midrange as a real piano). The CA79 has the same piano engine, but the cabinet is shorter and the speaker system is not as good, giving you a sort of unblended sound in the high registers (like you can hear the tweeter somehow separated from the rest of the sound, and the sound is not immersive, but more localized, like inside the piano), and a step down from the CA99 for sure, speaker system-wise. The CA99 has 4 small full range speakers on top that sound super clear, and the wooden resonator ("soundboard") gives you frequencies that seem to start around 130 Hz or so. You really don't hear the "soundboard", what you hear is the speakers on top, but they are complemented by the wooden resonator (bass). You will see in the CA99 a long strip of fabric below the key bed: it is NOT a speaker, like many people think (even piano dealers present it as a "speaker" when it is not), behind that fabric are 3 race-track shaped holes (two large and one smaller) that allow the soundboard to breath. The Roland LX series have a very artificial sample, so the speaker system has to amplify this mediocre sample, and you get a muted, muddy sound in both the LX706 and LX708. I would buy the Kawai CA79 rather than a Roland LX. In the Roland dealer I played the LX series, they had models of the PHA50 and Grand Hybrid Action, which is basically a longer PHA50. The CA99 also has a nicer finish on the keys than the CA79. Similarly, the LX708 has a nicer finish on the keys than the LX706 (both models go from matte black keys to satin black keys, which look better).

@@Instrumental-Covers I liked the CA99 when I played it, but didn't care for the cheap touch screen controller on the side. One thing I like about the Roland LX series is the display and controls are right in front of you. Easy to see, and easy to adjust. I think the controller is better on the CA79. I think it has buttons. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's very important to easily be able to save settings. The DGX can save everything, it's just not always easy to figure out how to do it.
@Instrumental-Covers2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeLinux2000 The CA79 doesn't have buttons, it has the same color touch screen the CA99 has. The CA59 and CA49 do have buttons. I guess it is personal preference to have a display or buttons. One positive side of the touch screen on the left is that it has a more piano-like presence. The Roland LX708 gives you a piano-like furniture, yet it doesn't look very different than a portable digital piano with all those buttons in front of you, kind of like playing an FP90X encased in an upright furniture style. I think the Yamaha CLP785 looks even more professional than the Kawai CA99 when it comes to the touch screen on the left, because Yamaha uses a more sober, professional looking screen without those grand piano pictures (just dark blue and white color letters in a black background) and even better: it disappears and becomes completely black when not being used, so it looks as if you are playing a real piano.

I noticed the speaker system wattage is not discussed in this video, compared to previous videos, which I think is a good move. If there is a specification that is misleading in practice is the amplifier's wattage, particularly for digital pianos. The actual amplifier's output in a digital piano under normal playing conditions is likely to be about 1 watt. Just to cite Roland on this matter as an example: the FP90X has 60 watts of rated amplifier power, but Roland states that the instrument consumes 12 watts when turned on and nothing is played, and 14 watts when playing the piano at medium volume. This means the amplifiers are consuming at most 2 watts total at medium volume, so 1 watt maximum per channel. I performed an experiment with my Yamaha DGX-670: 5.4 watts consumption when turned on and nothing being played, up to 6.4 watts consumption at maximum volume (therefore, about 1 watt real output). I also measured the consumption of an Onkyo receiver (class A/B, 19 watts playing nothing) powering a pair of small bookshelf speakers (low sensitivity), and 5 watts was enough to have them play at around 82 decibels in the room (measured by a dedicated decibel meter), which is reasonably loud for me. If I had used high sensitivity speakers, let's say around 96 dB, then 1 watt would have been uncomfortably loud. What about bass? Do you get more low end in a digital piano if you have more watts? Not necessarily. It depends on a few things: most piano patches will need very little bass really (the 27.5 Hz of the lowest note refers to the fundamental frequency, very weak, not the tone itself, which is mostly overtones). Most piano content ranges from 60 Hz to about 10 kHz in practice, and that's coming from a concert grand piano. That's bookshelf speaker territory. And you can't make bass just with more watts alone, as you need a speaker system capable of making bass (proper speakers in proper enclosures). So, in general, more watts are not indicative of a fuller sound, more bass, or more volume. For one, don't even assume the digital piano is producing the stated watts.
@emperorIng3602 жыл бұрын
I was talking about wattage and power consumption on these pianos with my father, who was an electrician most of his adult life. When he looked at a cross section of all the specs of these brands and saw their power consumption he had to laugh - for as much talk in the product pages all of these digital pianos draw in a very small amount of power: e.g. your window-unit AC uses about 100 times more electricity than your digital piano, dealing in Amps rather than watts. I ended up settling on the LX706 myself after extensive testing, but I think some of the marketing speak about wattage etc. can be a bit of "throwing numbers out there to impress" when the main things should be: sound and keys. The wattage is more than likely going to be besides the point.

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for the question! It all comes down to a matter of subjectivity of course. With that said, for me, I prefer the action of the GP510 over the LX706. They're both excellent actions, but the GP510 plays a bit heavier to me and, consequently, it gives me a sensation of greater authenticity. With that said, the default piano sound of the LX706 is more to my personal preference sonically. The GP510's default piano tones are quite bright (European concert voicings). The mellower voicings of the GP510 are quite nice though.

Not feeling this model. The "Hamburg" is nice. Like the editing suites though. Like the action too. Thanks for this.

In Australia the LX706 (and Kawai CA99) sell for USD $3,000 + tax. So there hasn’t really been any price increase here. Perhaps the new Roland LX800 and Kawai CA80/CA100 models next year might see a price hike.

It is definitely interesting! Prices can vary quite drastically in different regions for a variety of reasons. Fingers crossed the prices stay as affordable as possible. :)

How do you record it? For me it sounds awful when recording
@MerriamPianos6 ай бұрын
We generally take a direct line out from the instrument itself. In our experiences, that yields the best results. You could also experiment with miking the piano as well, but, if you are going to combine it with a line out feed, you may have to do some phase aligning between the various sources.

@@MerriamPianos When I use the 6.25 mm outputs it sounds very bad, completely different from how the piano sounds normally. I don't know why.

At 12-03-2024 Roland launched its newest LX-models. I would love to see a comparison made by Stu.

You can certainly bank on those coming your way soon! ;)

I am not changing my mind: modelling sound to take and not deep enough. I can pass on it with pianoteq for 99€ but not here… sampling is something else, still best option
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
Everyone will have their own personal preference of course. With that said, there is a place for both types of engines in different applications. But, to that point, sampling engines definitely have an edge in terms of authenticity. :)

Do you ship to Quebec?

We do! We are able to ship/deliver most digital pianos anywhere in Canada. :)

Is it me or Roland never express extortion? Like in authentic piano, if you "abuse" it will create "bad" noises. In Kawai digital piano, if you push keys too hard it will create "bad" noises like normal piano should do.
@Instrumental-Covers2 жыл бұрын
If by "bad" noises you mean a sort of metallic noise in addition to the more "woody" sound of a note when played softly, then yes, Roland does make those noises. In fact, they are notorious for their excessive metallic sound when the notes are pressed hard. I had a Roland RP401R before that not only had those abrupt changes in the tone profile (it used the SuperNATURAL engine) when the keys were pressed hard, but also had a large metallic plate on the back of the piano that resonated with the speaker vibrations, adding even more metallic noise. I don't find this "dynamic response" of Roland pianos to be natural and realistic: real pianos do change in tone profile, but in a more subtle way.

When will Roland realise that the discontinued EP760 was a gem. Plenty of power in the speakers, and basic but decent sounds. Roland should know how many EP760s were sold, and now need replacement. Jesus, like they offer crap replacements, 2.5 watts etc. rubbish. They had a winner in the old 76s and 760s. Brain dead development gurus. They know people used the 76 key units with 10 watts. Why the heck won’t they listen to the customer????
@MerriamPianos Жыл бұрын
The EP760 was definitely an interesting offering from Roland that was very rich in features for its size and price point. The new EX10 has some similarities to that model and is worth investigation if you were a fan of the EP760. Of course, the speaker system is only 5 watts compared to 10 watts, but the sound is still quite substantial. Keep in mind that twice the amount of wattage does not necessarily translate to twice the volume or perceived volume.

doesn't it sound like a ... classical guitar?
@MerriamPianos5 ай бұрын
I believe there are nylon string guitar sounds onboard the piano, but the core piano sounds are distinctly "piano sounding" to my ears anyways.

The notes seem to last longer, as 8n guitars, notes sound as stretc hed losing it' shape., and character..The main pitch seems to be less neat, it's scorted by close by freqs on either side, as if the peak was thicker, shorter and less sharp. Piano reality modeling seems to be more like a real piano than the pure acoustic modeling

Technically speaking regarding inflation, we are not experiencing “price inceases”; We are experiencing a devaluation of currencies. In other words, a simple price increase does not affect the value of the money in your pocket; however, the devaluation of currency makes the money in your pocket worth less. 🤓 Team Roland here through and through! 🫵🤠🤚
