Merry Christmas, Darling - The Carpenters

Richard Carpenter composed the music for this song in 1966 when he was 19 years old. Frank Pooler wrote the lyrics twenty years earlier, in 1946, when he also was only 19 years old. The song Pooler had written was to be a Christmas gift for his girlfriend, whom he was missing while being away from her during a visit with his parents at Christmas time. However, their relationship ended before he was able present it to her.
Twenty years later, Pooler was the choir director at California State University in Long Beach, when both Karen and Richard Carpenter were members of the choir. Richard and Karen were performing locally during the Christmas season and had tired of playing the usual Christmas fare. Richard asked Pooler, their favorite professor, if he had any ideas for different Christmas songs.
Pooler remembered the Christmas song he had written many years before and mentioned it to Richard, adding that he didn't think much of the melody anymore. Richard said he would try his hand at writing new music for the lyrics. Within about 15 minutes he was finished creating a song, written by two teenagers who were a generation apart, that was destined to become a Christmas classic.
The song was first released as a single (yes, a 45) on November 20, 1970, and earned gold record status. This song sparked the idea of a Christmas album by The Carpenters, and on October 13, 1978, "Christmas Portrait" was released with this newly recorded version of the song. Karen re-recorded her vocals for the album version as she felt that she could give the vocals a more mature treatment. This newly recorded version was presented on their TV Christmas special in 1978, as seen here, and became a hit all over again.
Karen Carpenter - March 2, 1950 - February 4, 1983 (32 years old)
Frank Pooler - March 29, 1926 - January 19, 2013 (86 years old)

In my humble opinion, Karen Carpenter's "Merry Christmas, Darling" is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever recorded. I bought the album in the early '70s and played it often; I am not ashamed to say that listening to this song still makes me cry, even after all these years. Her death, and the circumstances that surrounded it, still resonates and gives this song a poignancy it didn't have upon its conception. She left for us the gift of her voice and for that I am grateful.

Being 64 I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in the car, I couldn't believe that a Christmas song could be so beautiful. Being a huge Carpenters fan from the beginning, Karen's voice made my heart just stop! And, the ending arrangement, I just said Richard has done it again! What an angelic sound! Classic! Now, this is what superb music looks and sounds like. If this doesn't move your very soul, something is wrong! RIP to one of the greatest voices of all time!!

I was 13 years old when this song was released and it's always been all the more poignant for me, as I still can remember the young women, like yourself, whose boyfriends/husbands/fiances were fighting over in Vietnam and would call WFIL AM in Philadelphia (some in tears) requesting this song. They would tape it on their old tape recorders and send the tape to their "loves" overseas, along with their Christmas cards and letters. I often wonder how many of those couples were able to reunite and go on to enjoy many years, and memories, together...

Its my favorite Christmas song. Welcome to the Karen and Richard fan club. Wistful and sad, even more so when you know Karen died the slow suicide of an eating disorder. And David Bowie and Bing Crosby. There were great Christmas TV specials in the 1970s. I don't think its like that today, sadly.

This Christmas song is a classic that will be enjoyed by all for many decades, if not centuries. Only Karen Carpenter could provide the soul and silky smooth voice we hear in this song. You can't help but to just keep hitting the repeat button to hear it again, over and over. But let's not forget the man who wrote this song and her brother, Richard Carpenter, who so skillfully composed this gem. I also credit the background chorus for giving this song a heavenly flavor. Especially at the end of the video as Karen places the package in the mailbox....the chorus is ON POINT! This is just a brilliant piece of work by all involved in its creation.

The lyrics were written in 1944 by Frank Pooler while thinking about a love interest. Late 60's, Karen and Richard were looking for new Christmas music; Frank gave them his lyrics. Richard wrote the musical accompaniment in 15 minutes. The 7" single was released in 1970, and went to #1 on the charts. Nothing like an unrequited love story to bring tears to your eyes.

If your children appear anything like this angel of my musical upbringing, ANYTIME, please take steps to rule out anorexia nervosa. +blachubear If you happen to have a Spotify account (free will do), do a search and you'll find quite a few covers to audition. None that I've heard top Karen's gorgeous, definitive version. But I very much like versions I've heard by Christina Perri (in much the same style as Karen's) and Jessie Kol (who gives it an uptempo jazz treatment that's less melancholy than the original, but still sweet and very appealing).

I'm a mid Gen X kid that grew up playing Carpenter songs in middle school band most notably "Merry Christmas Darling". Karen has one of the greatest voices of all time, hands down. So soothing and pleasant to listen to. Hearing this song reminds me of Christmas at any time of the year. A classic song that will live on forever. It's April 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is in full swing around the world with no end in sight yet. I hope I will be able to look back at this comment some day and reflect on how things were back in the good ol' days of the 70s & 80s versus the present.

This song came out when my boyfriend was in Vietnam. Every time for years when I heard it that time came rushing back. He is gone now and my husband had also passed so this song which is my favorite Christmas song make me smile and cry at the same time. Rest in Peace Karen Carpenter and thank you for the gift of your music

Karen Carpenter is the ONLY singer that made me feel like she's singing to and just for me with every single song. I have yet to experience this song and not tear up. :).

Her background vocals are as heavenly as her vocal tracking. She was and till this day still is an amazing artist. R.I.P beautiful

IRT Unionport Are you aware that Karen and Richard did most of the background vocals for her songs?

Nothing can beat the 45 version. Dear Karen, whatever made you think your best wasn't good enough? Little girl blue, sorely and sadly missed by all. The angels have another lead sister. 😢

Dedicated this song in 1971 to a young man who didn't come home from Vietnam.

yes, her and her brother were KNOWN among others things for their harmonies... JUST those were incredibly beautiful for every song they ever sang and then you add in the beauty of the music and THAT VOICE, HER LEAD VOICE! otherworldly beautiful moving perfection!...and yes, it was ONLY her and her brother in those harmonies! their vocals stacked together! wow and more wow!
