Early 1970s I Loved Reading Sgt. Fury for Fun & Sgt. Rock for Reality.

In the early - mid nineties Keith Giffen and Paco Medina had Sgt.Rock leading Suicide Squad (while Amanda Waller was operating behind the scenes…as usual) that iteration of the Squad was what I affectionately call a “wood chipper” comic (at least 3/4 of whatever team was operating met untimely demises .) And at the time that comic came out I would say with this buddy of mine I used to work with “Marvel should have Nick Fury lead an iteration of The Thunderbolts (I called Freedom Force) with D list Marvel villains put in the same situation that that version of Suicide Squad put in (Pitch: the Carrot: Early Parole by going on missions as apart of Freedom Force, those missions have a high likelihood of untimely ends, and if said villain gets lucky and survives, then they get to keep going on missions until they get “unlucky”. It’s like playing black jack and saying “Hit me”… and you have two kings showing. It’s like playing Russian roulette…with a bullet in every chamber, and the only hope for survival is the revolver jamming). I would have had Nick Fury working with Diamondback, USAgent (who was paralyzed during the nineties fight a crazed prototype Captain America called Protocide) Hiram Ridley (sarcastic Computer hacker covering Freedom Force’s tracks, and DumDum Duggan. Those would have been Nick Fury’s new Howlers, however Nick Fury and DumDum would have been surrounded by people that operated by using unethical means (USAgent), and methods (Diamondback, Ram Ridley) to wage war, with no hill to be taken, and no clean victory to be had. If Marvel released that comic during the 90’s -early 2000s it could have done well, but Marvel didn’t. Funny enough in 2004 or 2005 Warren Ellis took over Thunderbolts and put people like Bullseye, Venom, a PTSD addled Robbie Baldwin, and an unhinged Norman Osborn on the roster, and the rest was history.

Sargent Rock didn't have Superpowers. So he never got to be a member of the DC Universe! Superman is the first. But when you are with Easy Company you have some good fighting men. An Indian sharpshooter. And BULLDOZER he can lug a 50 caliber machine gun into combat. Usually it's a 30 cal. Vietnam was so unpopular many WW2 Comics never made it past the early 70s.

Avengers..X Men..& of course Spider Man...I loved the back history of Nick Fury & how he went on to become the leader of SHIELD.. including the explanation of how Fury never aged due to the Infinity Formula! Anyways great video brother.. looking forward to more of your Marvel Comics histories 👑

Late 60's and early 70's I never missed Sgt Fury,Sgt Rock, Ghost Rider or the Rawhide Kid. It was truly a different world than today. A glance into the concept of right and wrong with detours into the supernatural. Not all of our heroes had superpowers and that helped keep us grounded to some degree.

Jack Kirby was the real deal. He was an Army recon scout for Patton who was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. His legendary speed as an artist was something he developed in combat since his job involved sketching enemy positions behind the lines making it a matter of survival for him to be able to get it done fast. Nick Fury like Steve Rogers was based largely on Jack's own personality and values although probably not as much as Ben Grimm was.

Oh those Dick Ayers penciled /John Severin inked pages take me back (That’s how it is credited but really it is more like Ayers layouts and Severin’s finishes. John Severin’s style comes through so strongly, even over Ayers’ Kirby-esque poses). That era of the Howling Commandos is the one I remember most. That’s when I started reading my older cousins collection and recognized his style from the old EC comics my uncle had.
@xkot6431
@xkot6431 Ай бұрын
I first discovered Severin from his work in Cracked magazine, and imprinted on it. Seeing his panels in this video makes me wonder why he seems to have been largely forgotten. He was a master of composition and expression, and while quite realistic, his work was never fussy or stiff. He really was a masterful draftsman and storyteller.

This is cool. I was a Sgt Rock fan in the 60s and 70s. I thought Sgt Fury talked too much. Sgt Rock had at least some basis in reality. Enemy Ace was my favorite, though. A Sgt. The good news is there is a movie in the works starring Daniel Craig.

I can only think of one other replacement not mentioned above. Can't recall his name, but I think the comic's title was called "The War Lover." The replacement wanted little more than to attack the Nazis even if it meant doing so meant the Commandos failed their mission. It's been too long and I'm too lazy to pull the comic from storage, but I think the War Lover was killed on the one and only mission he went on.

I definitely remember that the Movie Dirty Dozen was popular and then they assembled Dugans Dirty Dozen. Samuel L. Jackson is a great actor. But we grew up with Nick who was white and one of his closest buddies was Jones from Harlem. A minority in an elite unit. Fans like myself didn't understand. But alot of the WW2 comics were done with. Nick did get some sort of special power to live longer. So I knew about SHIELD. So I never followed that Canon. So Samuel L. Jackson doesn't have to worry about being the leader of the Howling Commandos.
