All the symbolism with Gungi for their relationship is so perfect. Meruem being Marshal in parallel to his role for his species, and Komugi being the Spy for being inside the enemy's territory without being considered as a threat by them, but yet she is the piece used to "checkmate" enemy's Marshal. Each one is on one side of the board, yet still they can be a positive thing to one another. Komugi finally had met someone who actually values her like the way she truly deserves. Meruem finally has reached the last thing missing for his completely humanization, getting away from ants objectives and persuing something good and special for only himself, not for his colony or species. And Komugi making that possible for him. And both are the light that iluminates one another's life, being the reason for them to resignify the meaning of the other's life. Simply beautiful. And Pouf... poor him, he was destined to fail due to his idealization on another person. Unfortunately (or fortunately for all of us xD) there is no way Meruem could reach all Pouf's expectations, not only because his ideals were very unflexible but also cause Meruem has other perspective in life. All he wanted for his King was success, and all he wanted for himself was something to live for. But he never got a chance...
@nikhoff900711 ай бұрын
I'm so happy that people praise the writing of Pouf ! For me he is clearly the best of the three royals guards. His ideals, his power, his mental state, his relation with the humans ; meruem ; Yupi and Pitou... Everything about him is just on another level... We hate and love him, because we understands his perspective even so we know that he is following the wrong path... If we add the writing of Meruem ; Komugi ; Gon ; Netero ; Palm ; Knuckle ; Knov ; Ikalgo etc so MANY EXCELLENT CHARACTERS ! This show is on another level ! I hope that they will continue with the manga because it's also peak !!

Togashi's master move was to make this Nen monster Meruem killed by a Nenless weapon. During all the Journey, there was a massive gap between what has and what hasnt Nen, that was totally unexpected
@tng202211 ай бұрын
Togashi did that from the beginning. the idea of what is " power" was experimented on from the start of the manga. Gon won over Hanzo is another first big example. who's strong and who's weak, it's never clear. there's no line in the sands. what is " strong" and "weak" in HxH is what is strong and weak in life. the definition of power depends on each circumstance, it's always slippery, obscured, abstract, and delicate. it's got nothing to do with power, in all shape and form.

Damn I teared up again, idk how to explain the emotions that come from that final scene between Meruem and Komugi. Copy pasted comment Moves they play in Gungi signifies more in-depth meaning, read this if you want to cry more: Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that extent. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side.. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". He even got some godlike light-related photon-based powers before his death, allowing him to fulfill his name. In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and blind to boot), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away (the OST used during their death scene is called "Understanding"). Touching, isn't it? Togashi is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a masterpiece, a beautiful work of art, a canvas depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding.

I still think Pouf got one of the worst, if not _the_ worst, death in the series. He was defeated so utterly. All his ideals, everything he stood for, fought for, every plan foiled, everything ended in failure. Then moments before his death he learns that his ideal king no longer exists and Meruem has become fully human, yet will die soon anyway, as will he. And then he dies alone, like a poisoned little bug in the middle of the street, utterly crushed, with no hope, no future, only despair.
@DemPop11 ай бұрын
I feel like the short scene showing his corps, the cape getting torn away by wind, is one of the most underrated scenes of this arc, if not the show. It's understandable, since it's a part of *this* episode, but I just can't describe how GOOD that scene is to me, what a perfect, awful death. He's a character that many hate, and of course I wanted him to die when I first watched the show as well... but just that scene made me feel nothing but pity.
@crimsonpotemkin11 ай бұрын
@@DemPop yep, he is reduced to a pitiful state, the powerful and mighty royal guard Pouf. I love him as a character. He's such a beautiful depiction of the two sided madness of zealotry and devotion/loyalty, all clashing inside. He's actually the most interesting of the royal guards, because he's far more human than youpi and pitou. None of the royal guards have memories of their previous lives, but Pitou was definitely human before and not produced from magical beasts like youpi. In the end, he served not the king, but his own selfish desires the most. He served his imaginary ideal inside his head of what the king should be, which in the end is just his delusional ego's desire for a perfect king. In a poetic sense you could say that the delusional pouf was brought down by reality itself, something that tends to happens with illusions.

The order of most undignified death to least goes like this imo: 1. Pouf (unlike with Youpi, the king didn't even know or care about his death when it happened, I mean he knew they would all die but he really didn't give him a second thought after he remembered Komugi) 2. Youpi (only Welfin saw him die like a little bug because of the Miniature Rose, but at least the king got angry about his death at Welfin) 3. Pitou (at least she got to go out with a bang, literally - and she was content to give up her life if it means that Gon would focus all his rage on her and not go after Meruem as well, so she got peace of mind as well) 4. Meruem (for obvious reasons, he got to go out on his own terms with the person he respected/loved most)
@Afreshio11 ай бұрын
I cannot watch this without tearing up. Something about Komugi crying because she is booming with happiness. And later seeing Meruem so vulnerable and scared, looking for reassurance in a blind girl because he himself is blind. That's where my heart breaks... Before that we are looking at thos photon-like En particles floating around are acting like his eyes because he cannot see. So they are touching the surfaces of whenever they land and he can feel it. He either cannot longer feel because his aura is just residual and he is too weak to expect anything from Nen, or his brain is shutting down fast so he cannot process the information. Either way it's heartbreaking. The King depending on a little blind girl at his last moments. It's also a fact that Komugi says something in Japanese that is like a traditional speech formula in Japan for woman to accept a marriage proposal, right after Meruem reveals the truth about his current condition. It's the part she says "I may not be much, but...". This is Togashi telling us that they got married. And then we see both Gungi pieces dancing together in the void. "Oyasuminasai, Meruem" and Komugi is holding his hand, his head in her lap... I cannot.. Jesus this arc is perfect. And this end is so damn sad. Shortest happiness and love experienced by two lovers (platonic or romantic, it doesn't matter) and taken away so quickly by the tragedy of life. Togashi, MadHouse I'm so grateful for this gift. ... Next comes the epilogue where I also tear up a little in a certain moment.

Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique developed by Komugi that focuses on isolating the King (the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant), separating it from the other pieces and killing it, just as Netero and the Hunters were planning to do with Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a technique to counterattack it in the middle of a game, which means that the King's piece (representing Meruem) would no longer have to die (since it unexpectedly survived the nuclear bomb). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she develops a "counter attack to the counter attack" ("That move... It actually found a way out!"), representing the King's piece (Meruem), which apparently has to die in the end (because of Rose's poison). However, immediately after defeating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem begin an endgame together, a game they never finish. 1-5-1 Black King -> 9-5-1 White Lieutenant General, I believe, or something to that effect. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving Meruem's only black piece and Komugi's only white piece on the board, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two have always been united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece on the ground, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die by his side... The expression "Maybe I'm not worthy, but allow me to go with you" is an old Japanese idiom that Japanese women used to use to accept marriages, but since in their case it wasn't really a marriage, it shows their desire to have an intimate connection by wanting to die holding his hand. The black screen/black panels in the manga show that Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can no longer see her. This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines on everyone". He even obtained some photon powers related to God's light before his death, allowing him to fulfill the purpose of his name. What's more, as they play in the bunker before his death, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses her reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being much weaker (and blind to life), her light shone much brighter than his. So, when he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his head, allowing him to finally "see" or know what his face looks like. So when they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness, while she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has always seen, and knows what it's like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows her face, allowing each to better understand the other as they disappear (the soundtrack used during their death scene is called "Understanding").
