めるも さんぽ 水間寺 Japanese temple Tendai sect

水間寺（みずまでら）は、大阪府貝塚市水間にある天台宗の別格本山の寺院。山号は龍谷山。
本尊は聖観世音菩薩。水間観音の通称で知られる。新西国三十三箇所第4番札所。
周辺とともに大阪みどりの百選に選定されている
寺伝によれば、天平年間（729年 - 749年）に聖武天皇の勅願により行基が開創したものという。
行基は、病床の聖武天皇の夢に現れた観音菩薩を求め、白鳥（しらとり）に南西の方向に導かれたが、
その白鳥は和泉国で羽根だけを残し何処へともなく消え去り（この地は現・貝塚市鳥羽だという）、
彷徨いながら北東の方向へ進んで行くと、16人の童子(観音菩薩の化身)に遭遇し
（この地は現・貝塚市清児といい、稚児塚の伝承地が現存する）、その童子に案内され、
行基が2つの川が合流する「水間」の地に着き、誘われて滝に向かうと竜神が現れ、聖観音像を授けられたと伝わっている。
その滝は、現在の本堂の裏を流れる秬谷川にあったらしく、現在は岸辺に設置されたフェンスに
「聖観音菩薩出現の滝」と墨でかかれたボードが設置されている。
中世より武家による手厚い保護を受けていたが、羽柴秀吉による紀州征伐の際に根来寺に与したため、
天正13年（1585年）に堀秀政の軍勢に攻められて焼失した。
一時衰退したものの、岸和田藩主岡部氏 の帰依を受け、元禄年間（1688年 - 1704年）には堂宇も再建された。
その後、天明4年（1784年）の火災で再び焼失。
しかし、文化8年（1811年）に岸和田藩主岡部長慎により本堂が再建され、文政10年（1827年）には他の堂宇も再建された。
貞享5年（1688年）に刊行された井原西鶴の『日本永代蔵』の第1話「初午は乗て来る仕合」に「泉州水間寺利生の銭」と記されたことで全国的に知られるようになった。
1925年（大正14年）には参拝客を運ぶための水間鉄道水間線が開通している。
最近、行基菩薩を聖観音像が待つ「降臨の滝」まで導いた十六童子に因み、
水間鉄道清児駅を起点に水間観音駅から「水間寺境内」までの間の「厄除け街道」に、
障がい者支援施設「土の子陶房」で制作された焼物の「厄除け十六童子・脇導師」一対ずつが16箇所に設置され、
参詣者の新しい楽しみとなっている。
Mizumadera is a special head temple of the Tendai sect in Mizuma, Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture. The mountain number is Mt. Ryutani.
The principal image is the Holy Kanzeon Bodhisattva. Known as Mizumadera Kannon. New Saigoku 33rd place No. 4 bill place.

According to the temple, Gyoki was founded during the Tenpyo era (729-749) at the request of Emperor Shomu.
Gyoki was led to the southwest by a swan in search of the Kannon Bodhisattva who appeared in the dream of Emperor Shomu on his sickbed.
The swan disappeared in Izumi Province, leaving only its feathers (this place is now called Toba, Kaizuka City).
As he wanders in the northeast direction, he encounters 16 children (the incarnation of the Kannon Bodhisattva).
(This place is called Sechigo, Kaizuka City, and the tradition of Kaizuka still exists.)
It is said that Gyoki arrived at the land of "Mizuma" where the two rivers meet, and when he was invited to head for the waterfall, a dragon god appeared and was given the statue of Holy Kannon.
The waterfall seems to be on the Kibitani River that runs behind the current main hall, and is now on a fence installed on the shore.
There is a board marked with "Sacred Kannon Bodhisattva Appearance Waterfall".
It had been well protected by the samurai family since the Middle Ages, but it was given to Negoro-ji Temple when Hideyoshi Hashiba conquered Kishu.
In 1585, it was attacked by Hidemasa Hori's army and burned down.
Although it declined temporarily, Dou was rebuilt during the Genroku era (1688-1704) following the devotion of Mr. Okabe, the lord of the Kishiwada domain.
After that, it was burnt down again in the fire of 1784 (Tenmei 4).
However, the main hall was rebuilt by Kishiwada feudal lord Okabe Choshin in 1811, and other temples were rebuilt in 1827.
