Watch Out of Africa here: • Out of Africa
The most acclaimed motion picture of 1985 stars Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in one of the screen's great epic romances. Directed by Oscar winner Sydney Pollack, Out of Africa is the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer), runs a coffee plantation in Kenya, circa 1914. To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, its people and a mysterious white hunter (Robert Redford). The masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.

I remember bawling my eyes out at this scene when the movie was released. It's the same every time I see it. So many scenes in this movie are special to me.

Have you thought of visiting the Blixen house, just north of Copenhagen? It’s perfectly preserved, and utterly memorable.

After watching I decided to go to Kenya and Tanzania if I had a chance.... in 1986 I got that chance and spent 3 months... about 5 weeks on camping safaris. It was beautiful.

'To an Athlete Dying Young' by AE Housman THE TIME you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-place; Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high. To-day, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears: Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl's.

So many years since I saw the film and yet even now, some scenes make the eyes prickle. I never lost my resentment however, at Robert Redford being give to part of an archetypal, died in the woo,l Englishman. Were there really NO English actors who could not have played that man?. I suspect Dennis Finch-Hatton would have felt somewhat insulted.

Rubbish Africa is still recovering from it's inability to govern itself as well as educate itself.Stop reaching to blame people or a system that no longer exists. That right there is part of the many issues still today as well as the tribal wars and disease.

Until the British came to Africa, there was not one single water purification plant, no bridges, no paved roads, no railroads, or public hospitals, vaccinations, public education, or any other form of modern civilization. The British, for all their human foibles, did more to relieve suffering in Africa than the previous 5,000 years of African self-sustention.
