Hot Take: Even though these have EL84s, Mini rectos capture more of the classic Dual Recto/Solo Head sound than the Bad Lander does.

I would agree with that, as they're built on the actual rectifier platform where's the Badlander is pretty much its own thing with the rectifier badge even though it can get in the rectifier wheelhouse.

I think the problem with full size rectifiers is the fact that they're overpowered, the lower the wattage, the punchier the tone, the higher the wattage, the more headroom you get. Most guitar players that play metal are often misguided thinking they need more watts for more volume, which is simply untrue. The lower the watts, the more focused the tone will be. This thing is the rectifier tone people have been chasing for years.

Never had the mini rectifier but my rectoverb 25 head sounded great with a 4x12. Sounds a lot like my recto 100 multi watt minus some thump and girth. For someone not wanting a 100 watt head, the mini or rectoverb is a great choice.

Love my ROV25 with a BD-2. I think it's slightly smoother on attack and it's bloom on sustained notes is a little more dynamic, but not a massive difference to the Mini Rec.

I wholeheartedly agree! I bought my Badlander because of Kyle’s comparison of that amp to the Dual Rectifier, and I want to know if the Mini can hold up to the Badlander. I’m in the market for a Mini amp for the sake of portability, and Rectifier style amps are my go to sound.

Yep. 6505+ here.(usa made) just cant pull away from it. Bought new in 2014, been in love ever since. I run my gain @ 8, boss sd-1 @ about 1/8 up, and a g-string decimator in the fx loop. Shuts it right up. Very low noise. Best tones ever!!🤘👍🥂

my rectoverb 25 combo (which I assume is the same circuit as the Mini Rectifier + a spring reverb) is the best at home jamming amp ever. Love the modern mode and clean channel on that thing. I wish I could make it work on stage.

Was thinking of getting the mini rec to replace it since I've only been playing at home. Then the Badlander came out. I dont like EL84 tube on amps that intend to crush our soul. That is why I only use preamp of my Rectoverb 25 with external mono 50W 6L6 Poweramp from Fryette. It really transforms Rectoverb 25 to a TRUE monster and the most versatile amp I have ever used.

It's loud enough on distorted Channel but the clean Channel may not be enough against a gorilla-drummer. If you're miked up It Will be OK. I had to sell my Mini Rectifier because in some situations I wasn't miked up and clean tones couldn't cut through my band's drummer. Now I'm on a 50w Head and it's enough for clean tones.

Sounds pretty good. And isn't the SLO based on the Mesa Mark II? So you could say Mesa "borrowed" a circuit that was "borrowed" from them in the first place and moded, and then they moded it a bit more.

Based, yes, but vastly modified. The Rectifier was a DIRECT, value for value preamp copy of the SLO100, so, little different there.

@@belligerentamateur Well, I wouldn't say that the Recto is a direct copy of the SLO100, since it does have some different tone shaping elements and paths, it runs hotter, and it has some extras. But certainly if one looks at both schematics one can easily identify that the Recto came from the SLO, while one couldn't really identify that the SLO was based on a Mark II. The SLO has quite a simple circuit, yet it sounds so good. I might have to make myself a preamp based on that circuit to test with the power amp of my Mark V.

Great playing and awesome heavy tone sir. I do have the same amp and I need this kinda badass tone on all channels with especially bed room volumes. Lower volumes and lower wattages. I am thinking to buy a metal zone mt-2 and using it as a preamp. I have an Ibanez ts-9 but I still need more tightness and heavy distortion like yours. Eh, this amp is such an enigma. Too loud for bedrooms, can't push it loud enough with a full metal band to be heard. Too much mids in modern mode. I've owned three of them because I keep lying to myself that they rule, but they are just not as practical a lunchbox as I wish they were.

No, they’re all like that. Run a volume box through the effects loop and it will solve that issue.

It needs a volume pot in the effect loop to keep it at conversational levels. If u want power tube distortion, u will need an attenuator.

It’s only got the recto preamp. The big boy has tube rectifier tube, this has solid state. Bunch of other Recto settings missing. But much better value than a Friedman Runt 20 with more features and equally crushing

Mike Soldano actually ripped-off the Mesa Mark II design. The Mark III Red Stripe smokes the SLO by a mile.... From Wikipedia: Michael Soldano originally worked with his head technician Bill Sundt at Stars Guitars (San Francisco, CA), modifying amps brought to him. He had built his first amp, a Fender Bassman clone, with the aid of books being discarded by a library. Michael worked on modifying his version of the Bassman for years, until he bought a Mesa/Boogie Mark II and began modifying this amp. The first three SLO amps were based upon this amp and the first one was sold to a female friend. The second one was sold to Howard Leese from the band Heart. Within six months, he had sold amps to Steve Lukather, Michael Landau, Vivian Campbell, Aldo Nova, John Fogerty and Lou Reed............ I met Soldano, he's not a nice guy either.

Ripping off a circuit value for value and modifying it to your taste/spec are 2 different things. Without going down the rabbit hole of "every amp comes from the RCA radio circuit" there is a big difference between taking a circuit and changing what you don't like about it (in this case, pretty drastically) and directly ripping it off without changing it (dual rectifier preamp=SLO preamp)

@@belligerentamateur Right, but it doesn't change the fact the SLO is based on a Mark II. So Mesa can't rip-off a design that was ripped off from them.... Right ? If somehow my logic is flawed, please explain ....if you wish. I really don't think there was a "rip-off" at all. If a circuit is patented then there would likely be lawsuits over such violations. I've never heard of such lawsuits between Soldano and Mesa. Or from Fender for that matter. Thanks for the reply, really like your demos, you're one of the best. Keep up the great work ! Michael
