Very interesting. For small but precise engineering applications (especially on site with minimal setup preferably no rigs or markers) it would help to know what can be expected from KIRI pro especially 3DGS now compared to CR-Scan RaptorX or MetroX (promises), etc. For example to send a scan to someone to identify or fabricate a mechanical part ASAP.

So i bought the pro version, did a photo scan using hundreds if pics and tried the 3dgs... Both scans look good when in color but the mesh is almost unrecognizable for head scan. Any tips to get better quality? Something that requires just light touch ups in blender for example? I tried touching up the scan for about two hours and it was pretty bad still.

But as you may know, this algorithm isn't dedicated to large-area scanning, so it may not be as robust as scanning smaller objects. Chris is actually looking into some algorithms to dedicate the large area scanning. So let's cross our fingers :D

I knew it was only a matter of time before we used Gaussian splats to fix reflections in photo-scans! Could this also potentially be used for determining the specular/reflections of the surface and reconstructing accurate reflection/specular maps? 🤔 This, plus auto quad-mesh re-topology is going to make a fast game-asset pipeline.

Hey Aero3D, unfortunately this method won't work on external scanners. Because to achieve this level of mesh quality, we need to incorporate the mesh generation in the point cloud generation process, so it can only be done inside KIRI Engine

When I import a video taken with another camera, the model will not show up after the processing. Another issue is that when I export my models and download them on my computer, they will not open in the print 3d viewer. I then got this message: Loading fails error code 0x80004005. That happens also with files that I take with my phone camera and has opened in my phone after processing. Please help me out of this.

Yes, you are correct! The main reason to generate mesh from 3DGS is to use the 3DGS to our existing 3D asset pipeline. But for future proofing, we are also developing addons to let people directly use 3DGS files in other 3D software :)

I've been interested in 3D scanning ever since I got my first 3D printer, but I've always found the results for small detailed objects to be quite disappointing. Your demo looks promising, but all of the objects you showed are larger than an apple. How does it do for much smaller, detailed objects?

Hi Joe, thanks for the question! If the small object is non-reflective or non-transparent and it has a lot of details, KIRI Engine can scan it pretty well. The trick is to take photos. When taking photos around smaller objects, try to switch to the microscope camera in your phone. I've actually made a comparison video between KIRI Engine and Revopoint 3D scanner. Yes that's actually why we've decided to make a 3D scanning startup in the first place :) 5 years ago, we realized 3D scanning was way too expensive for 3D printer hobbyists, that's how we started this company :) In KIRI Engine, you can export 3D scan as STL format which is compatible for all 3D printers. As for the cost, if you only wish to use the photogrammetry mode (Photo Scan mode) in KIRI Engine, it is completely free to use with three free exports every week! But photogrammetry can only scan texture-ful objects like a piece of rock or wood which has a lot of visible textures. If you are looking to scan other objects like a car body with reflective surfaces, you need to have a Pro account to use our new 3DGS to Mesh algorithm, it costs 35USD a year right now because of the holiday sales.
