Some of his leads in Immutable have that Thordendalian "alien communique" effect, where when you listen to it you get locked in, and he starts doing that legato tapping s*** that twists your brain, and then after you're done listening to it you know things you didn't know before..

I’m glad to see health is more and more a question asked to metal drummers in general but I was very curious for Tomas as his limb independence is just superb, but that can result in so many odd physical stresses. Sustaining this degree of athleticism night to night is tremendous work and the turnover rate is pretty high up for many bands. Inflammation on nerves can result in nervous autoimmune disorders and at that point you have to stop playing or slow down. Excellent interview!

Bleed is awesome but for me it's not even one of their songs I'd most want to hear them play live. My ideal 'shuggah set list would include mostly older songs like pre Obzen along with new songs from Immutable. I would love to see them play a live set of Catch 33 and I in their entirety.

10:00 Wild opinion, but here me out: Messhugah’s legacy and impact on the industry is very similar to a vastly different artist from a different genre… Sade. Her music is cited by so many artists, and her output has slowed down over the years, but her songs have remained similar in style but always quality and sonically different in little ways. So Messhugah is similar… they’ve kept a similar groove throughout all the years, so much so that you can still recognize their music as Messhugah despite all the copycat bands we’ve seen wit djent. SO, the GOATs will take their time so that they can produce great music thay they can enjoy and which we will also enjoy. Patience is a virtue.

Just speculating here, and I have very little data to rest on. But to me this comparison highlights how a significant part of Meshuggah listeners seems to (speculation) listen to a wide range of music, and not just different flavours of metal (which of course is a MASSIVE genre in itself).

Tomas is a legendary musician that people will gladly pay money to see play with Meshuggah any day of the week. It's really sad how governments have manipulated society to make it extra difficult for guys like this to make a living. Having to worry about traveling and all the totally nonsensical and inconsistent rules/regulations of whatever random place you happen to be in at the time. That's got to be incredibly annoying to go on tour in this environment.

1 year off the kit explains the drumming on the new album. No offence, but, it was weak. I call it tour friendly for Tomas. Age might be a factor here? BTW....The new album is amazing!
@BillCoz
@BillCoz 2 жыл бұрын
He meant it was 1 year since recording the record so he hadn't played since finishing drum tracks over a year ago and is now just past the point of struggling to learn the new songs and rehearse their live set, it wasn't that he hadn't played for a year and then he wrote/recorded the album, it was a year between finishing the album and starting rehearsals for the tour. Like when they finished the Obzen record Tomas couldn't even play Bleed live so he had to learn it before that tour. Age is not really even a factor in a studio aside from the knowledge that the songs will have to be played live eventually for the tours, there's a balance between making a record with a lot of crazy ass drumming and keeping the difficulty within his own skill level in a live setting. Meshuggah have programmed drums for songs and whole albums before(Catch33, War) to write the songs and make demos, on the album the drums do not have to be played all in one take. When the Nothing album came out some fans hated it, said the drumming on it was too laid back and plodding, no double kicks, no fast beats at all on that record... it is now considered one of the greatest drum albums ever..
@Dyingsociety38
@Dyingsociety38 2 жыл бұрын
The drumming was weak? What? In what sense? Id say age plays a certain part but i think its fresh to leave leave out double bass stuff. I like this slower approach and the drumming is sick.
@BillCoz
@BillCoz 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I wouldn't say that age was never a factor for Tomas when writing/recording the album, but I didn't think the drumming was as "laid back" as you make it sound. There are way more double kick and faster beats/parts on Immutable than the Nothing record, which had absolutely no double-time beats or fast double kick drum blasts, with every song being a slower tempo groove feel. I fucking love Nothing and Immutable, I wouldn't call the drums on either of those records "weak", but of course you are entitled to think so..
