In this deep dive demo I explore the Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 . This wonderful instrument is really something to behold. It's massive, has big knobs, hands on controls, one knob per function, most accessible sequencer ever and in general just really feels like a true instrument.
Trying to make this more tutorialesque proofed to be difficult as Perkons kept dragging me into a flow state. But I think this demonstration shows you just how much fun this thing is to play with.
Enjoy!

The great thing of this machine is that it is NOT an 808/909 but does something different. We need more stuff like this for percussion. We can't always live in the 808/909 world. There is so much more

Hands down best demo of Perkons I e seen. You’re doing stuff that I didn’t think possible with the drones. Like you I’ve been experimenting with individual efx pedals to the individual voices but i have couple of questions to your setup: 1) how come your not going Send and Return to an EFX pedal? 2) where does the send master (black/white cable on right) go to? Thank you for a great video!
@Davemech
@Davemech 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! :) 1) because I use stereo fx and the send and return are mono. So sending out to a stereo effect adds stereo width. Additionally it gives me a way to mix the effected part of the signal separately. 2) that’s the master out which is going into my mixing desk (SSL big six). Same for the outputs of the effect pedals. Cheers!

@Davemech
@Davemech 6 ай бұрын
Thanks ! ❤️ It sounds great and beefy on a big system. That’s for sure. I can’t really compare it to other instruments as there are too many factors at play. With samplers it depends on your samples for starters. I can make all instruments sound equally shitty or great really. Just a matter of dialing in what you love to hear. Sorry for this non-answer 🤷‍♂️

@@Davemech thanks; quite interesting with the semi-inserted audio connectors to the OTO machines. It reminds me of a internal quirk of the Roland JD-800 synthesizer (that I used back in the 90s), where you could get some truly unique metallic sounds the fx modules if you basically overloaded everything and turned the volume of the JD-800 way way way down .. and then simply by navigating the fx menus with the knobs, the internal signals created these wonderful harmonics. As for the audio routing of the setup in the video, sorry for asking, but could you please check if I'm getting it right? HD-01 main output to Raindrops, Raindrops output to OTO red, OTO red outputs to OTO yellow HD-01 osc1 output to Raindrops HD-01 osc4 output to OTO red OTO red to mixer I'm considering starting getting into techno production again, but never left the scene since the early 90s. Thanks Dave super good jam! Learnt heaps to. Just ordered a Perkons yesterday and this is 120% confirmation it's the right choice. Choice of pedals? I see you have 2 x OTOs and RAIND-ROPS. I have no mixer :-( so was thinking the OTO BeBe Cherie on mixer duties (or there a better option?) and then the BOUM and BAM? This is such a creative instrument - mind blowingly good!
@Davemech
@Davemech 3 ай бұрын
Thank you ! If you go for Bebe cherie, very cool mixer, I’d skip the oto boum for now as Bebe can cover some of that really. Bam is a beautifully vibey reverb and maybe a delay. Raindrops is certainly nice. Bebe cherie has 1 “send” by using the mute/alt out function. So you could use a delay on that for example and then one of the perkons voices through the BaM :). You could also start with a simple 4 to 6 mono track mixer to see if that suits you and then slowly add to it with fx and eventually exchange it for a mixer that will suit your needs. Sometimes it’s better to start with some basics to find out what you’re looking for :) hope this helps ! Cheers

@Davemech
@Davemech 9 ай бұрын
Thanks ❤️ To be fair, with Elektron stuff it’s really possible to create as big a sound as you want. Certainly with the samplers, you can put in any sample and further shape the sounds. So I wouldn’t say this sounds fuller per se. The thing is that it’s much more narrow and focused on a positive sense. So the sounds really blend well and the overal sound signature is indeed quite warm and nice right out of the box. With Elektron stuff often you need to work a bit harder :) but then you get a lot more flexibility and sound design options in return.

Hi Dave, would the Perkons and the DB4 be a good match?
@Davemech
@Davemech 3 ай бұрын
Hey! I think they will be nice to use together yeah. I haven’t tried yet so far. You get 5 channels so all individual outs plus the main out can be used which is nice. The reason I haven’t really tried yet is that I had other plans for perkons :). I’ll put it on the list of things to record a video of ;)

No but I’m sure they are aware of this. It’s a pretty common thing you can do with Jack output sockets. Depends a bit on the architecture of a synth if it can be used though I guess :)

You know what features I'd really like to see on Perkons: 1) per-voice sequence reset, so I can just "fix" one voice's sequence which no longer lines up, due to having changed the length, division or multiplication, 2) a way to revert a single voice back to what's stored in the kit, and 3) a way to maybe hold down a button to (temporarily) make a bunch of changes across voices, and then release the button to have it instantly revert the voices back to their previous state.
@Davemech
@Davemech 7 ай бұрын
You can already do 3 Hold shift and change a parameter. It will change that parameter on all voices. Let go of shift and they revert back. Though your idea of having it do that with individual controls is quite neat yeah. Send in a feature request :) One feature request I really would love to see is shifting a voice’s sequence left or right. But I haven’t come up with a workable way of implementing such a feature yet.
@Cowboy-Ben-Alman

Yeah. I can now consistently recreate it: wiggle a knob and while doing that press and hold shift. It will go into control all mode. But when you release shift the parameters don’t snap back.

I know it has randomness but only 16 steps..? .. a cheap korg SQ-64 sequencer is far superior..
@Davemech
@Davemech 3 ай бұрын
Has much more than just randomness. Can record all parameters into the sequencer , parameter locking, shuffling, odd track lengths, speed per track, direction per track. There’s an lfo with all parameters as destinations. Etc. So sure, only 16 steps (you can also chain patterns by the way), but you can make it sound like much more than that ;) and on top of that it’s the way you can keep moving everything by using your hands as modulators that makes it so engaging. So to call sq-64 far superior is quite a leap.

@@Davemech ..I really like Erica Synths that's why I wanted to check this out.. I have a bunch of Erica Synths modules.. I have a lot of sequencers, 3 SQ-64's, 3 keystep Pro's, 2 Beatstep Pro's , Tiptop Audio Circadian Rhythms, Trigger Riot, SQ-1 and bunch of other Euclidean rhythm module, besides other older hardware sequencers.. as far as quick straight forward live proformance goes I think that Circadian Rhythms is the winner.. 8 tracks up to 64 steps per track, can chain patterns up to 512 steps, micro timings, trigger delay per step, swing.. when you hit stop all the track parameters are saved.. if I want an abstract sequencing method the Trigger Riot is the winner and a lot of fun.. I have the Circadian Rhythms and Trigger Riot SyncBus together which I like to refer to as Quantum Synced because using a 16 to 16 pin ribbon cable they become one sequencer in absolute perfect timing.. I don't think you are aware of the sequence parameters that are available per step on the SQ-64 while being able to see and edit 64 steps all at once..? ..the SQ-64 has 16 tracks (8 are triggers the other 8 are midi) in the D drum trac.. there is ROTATE, FILL, Direction,.. per drum step there is LENGTH, OFFSET, PROBABILITY and STEP DIVIDE which does really nice micro timings and more.. being able to see and edit all 64 steps is huge.. it would be easy to see the differences all you would have to do is midi map 4 sequencer tracks on the SQ-64 to control the HD-01 and see what you think..? ..you can get a used SQ-64 in excellent condition for $160 or less..

@@Eightball69couple of obvious things to check: 1. Guitar pedal works on other gear/mixers? 2. Guitar fx is set to 100% wet? 3. Jack plugs are plugged in completely ? Point 3 especially. The trick that I showed here works when routing the fx out to a mixer for example. When you use the send return on push itself make sure that the Jack plugs are inserted completely.
