Thank you. During my time at MSU ('66 - '70 BA, '74 - '75 MA), when I wasn't in class, working, or playing basketball at the Intramural Building (now IM West), I was in the Union Building studying or recreating ... it was my second home for about 5 years. I have a deep abiding love for my alma mater, and I'm still holding back tears about Monday night's horrific events there. My heart is broken for the families and friends of those taken so cruelly from us. But with God's help and Spartan strength the MSU community will recover and prevail.

Class of 2008. This sucks so much. Michigan State is such a lovely and serene campus and I had such a great time there as a student. I feel so bad that the sense of security of our campus has been compromised. We will recover from this though. Spartan Strong.

Are there other measures that could have been taken...maybe. But we thank God that the fatality numbers were not higher. Class of '21, in shock by what happened. Some of my friends are still attending MSU. MSU was my home and safe space when my actual home didn't feel like one, and I am so heartbroken for my fellow Spartans. My heart breaks for those we lost and for those still fighting to live. Way back in the 1960's I walked the MSU campus. Walked under the shadow of Sparty many a time. As I monitored the events unfolding Tuesday night all my memories of the beautiful campus and my days there came flooding back. These beautiful memories will now carry the burden of a tragedy that none of us will ever get over. We will carry this burden of grief and we will walk through our days but none of us will ever be the same. When will our lawmakers realize that they have the burden to make laws that can keep our students safer? Prayers and thoughts are nice, but we need laws and action. When we pray we need to ask for the ability to solve our violence problem in the USA. We, as voters, as lawmakers, have the ability to choose the right thing. So do it! We've had enough!!!!!

How about let's fix the problem. Low lighting EVERYWHERE around campus? How is that acceptable Let's start securing hall doors and all side doors. Let enforce making sure students aren't wedging doors open. Let's install cameras on campus to ensure the safety of the students. MSU has been in the news way to much and unfortunately the leadership there has a trend to just cover their tracks. Those students were SUPPOSED TO BE SAFE. I AM SO ANGRY AND SICK.

As a parent of an MSU student, I am devastated. This message is nice, yet something more needs to be done. It is called the right kind of protection. I'm sure that if schools around the nation collaborate with authorities that have experience and the know how of how to screen incoming people to the campus, a lot of these tragedies could be prevented. How is it that an armed man can just walk onto a campus filled with young, innocent students? Poetic words are kind and sweet but they don't heal a completely unnecessary and tragic loss to the parents who lost their beautiful children. Gun laws may or may not prevent this. Whoever wants a gun will find a way to get one, legal or not.

There were over 600 mass shootings in the US in 2022. Students aren't safe anywhere. As a graduate student and faculty member at MSU I am angry, but not at MSU. I am angry at the justice system that let a man who previously was on probation for illegal weapons aquire multiple weapons and ammunition. I am angry at the healthcare system for allowing those with mental illness to fall through the cracks. And I am angry at the politicians who refuse to enact stricter gun laws to prevent senseless tragedy like this.

Blaming MSU is misplaced. The active shooter plan developed by the university was implemented as it was supposed to be. I know. I received the text messages to run, hide, and fight. I am sure many more lives were spared because of the quick actions of law enforcement and first responders. Blame and anger should not be directed at MSU. Rather, our efforts should be directed towards providing help to those with mental illness and implementing common sense, appropriate gun control measures.
