My favorite account of Hartman is how he regularly made mincemeat of the USSR's so-called "flying tank" (Il2 Stormovik) by flying low, close, and underneath the Il2, downing that plane by shooting just a few rounds into its giant oil radiator. Coming in underneath also allowed him to avoid contact with the Il2's rear gunner. The rest of the Il2 was so heavilly protected that it was very difficult to shoot down any other way.

My father was a wingman in an F-84E and was shot down in North Korea. I have a song about it. This is fascinating! I am enjoying the comments and learning some history I didn't know.

Stunning compilation! Great pictures & explanation! Great change of music!! Great war hero!!! Just outstanding... @cupwithhandles Yes, it's the exactly the BF-109, often this aircraft is called by the public ME-109 for "Messerschmitt AG", the manufacturer, but thats wrong, the correct name is "Messerschmitt Bf-109"...

i read that enemy fighters oftenly tried to flee when they saw hartmann's plane. so what he did was, he handed his plane with the unique colourings on the nose to his wing man for example as a protection for him (his wing men).

The real Aerial Knight, he could just fly away for himself after war was over but chose to evacuate with his staff, what the character he has, present my personal salute to this "Forever Ace". (All the Me-109 Ace are slim guy, because the cockpit is tiny.)

This was even more true in WWI, when at least in the early years of the war it was not uncommon for pilots to land near a downed enemy to offer whatever assistance they could. Though you certainly had merciless killers back then as well. Where 'Bubi' Hartmann is concerned, he seems to have been a jovial and down to earth character. But more than that, he never lost a wingman in 1456 missions. And that, I think, is admirable.

petevas1, you are correct.... Hartmann almost always closed to point-blank range before he opened fire. As a result you would have the concentrated firepower of all three guns mounted within and on top of the engine scoring hits within the same exact area on the enemy aircraft.
@Diemerstein
@Diemerstein 16 жыл бұрын
No, he was never shot down, as someone mentioned , he wanted to use as little as possible ammunition wise, and wanted to make sure he got the kill the first time, by getting very close, as he once said, don't fire until the enemy fill the window. He was forced to land, or bail, because of the parts falling off the enemy planes. He was without a doubt, the best fighter pilot the world ever saw. In one mission, he downed 3 P-51D's with his ME109 without any help.

Erich Hartmann was the greatest fighter pilot that has or will ever live. BUT, he was shot down by enemy fire, many times. Twice in one day as a matter of fact. He always stayed close to the front so when he was shot down he could easily make it back to safety. His true story is really amazing.. He fought the Russians by the way, very rarely ever met an American. In fact, he led his squadron to fly their -109's to land at an allied base and surrender to the Americans when the war was over.

As has been said before, the odds of being an Ace are almost unimaginable, much less 352 without a loss. Assuming on any given day you might meet an opponent in combat of equal skill (and luck), statistically it is like flipping a coin 352 times and having it come up heads... every single time!

Sorry by Me-109 was the term used by the RAF pilots in their log books during WW2, to describe BF-109s. Me (short for Messershmidt). For this reason it is now one of the most common ways to refer to the plane. As with anything, history tends to be written by the victors.

@kokofisher the luftwaffe was not completely useless until they ran out of fuel at the end of the war, the reason why the allied airforces prevailed because they were fighting a war of atrition against 2 enemies that could out produce them in aircraft, the 109s shot down over 7000 planes in ww2

I'm sure some of the German aces were very good pilots, however the main reason behind their large total kills is that when they enlisted, they were there for the duration and didn't get rotated back home after a set number of missions. American Aces were generally sent back home as instructors. The main plight of the Luftwaffe in the later stages of the war was a severe shortage of skilled, well trained pilots. Their aircraft production actually peaked in 1944 at 35,046 airplanes.

I've read it, it's a good book, although it suffers from a little hero-worship. Basically, he was a very good pilot who used excellent tactics. He did his best to avoid dogfighting (which meant a relatively even fight) and instead opted for fast hit-and-run attacks. Shooting planes from their blind spot then bugging out wasn't very knightly, IMO, but you can't argue with the results.
@kokofisher

@Bondfanxever Find me a few German aces from the western front. German pilots were initially a lot better trained than their Soviet counterparts. What you described about how Allies dont have aces was due to difference in tactics. Experienced allied pilots (US/UK/Canadian) were sent back home to train new recruits, while experienced German pilots were sent over and over again until killed. Why do you think the Luftwaffle by 1944 was completely useless?

BF stands for Bayerisch Fluegzeugwerk out of Bavaria. ME stands for Messerschmitt. Messerschmitt designed the aircraft and BF manufactured it. The name was changed after the 'E' model to ME 109.

OK, I read some other comments and remembered that Hartman like to get so close to enemy planes (like the IL2) in order to kill them that he was often damaged by parts from the planes he killed. Maybe this accounts for the number of times he was "downed".

And because he was just an awsome pilot and crashed his stuka several times to prevent his comrades from being imprisoned.

@pudransemarikas bud anderson 16 1/2 victories.has flown p51 all the way to the f 15 In aerial combat it did not matter to me which type of enemy fighter I encountered. I felt that the Mustang could out perform both the ME109 and the FW190 and treated them pretty much the same. The FW190 had an air cooled radial engine and could probably take a little more damage than the liquid cooled ME109. you can point out someone i will too calling me names doesnt make you right

I read his biography and there it was said that Hartmann had to emergency land for 14 times at all. Furthermore it is to say that he fought in the sowjet union and most of his scores he made with light bombers whích had no change against the agile me 109. The best american fighter had a score of hmm..about 60 or 70. Hartmanns fighter unit shot down over 11.000 planes at all....several fighter legends were in this sqadron... Hartmann was no doubt very good at air combat. As for the number of his victories, I wonder how many of those were no match for a 109, like canvas and wood biplanes transporting mail, with no guns to defend themselves. I've heard that such kills are the main factor in many of these high numbers for German aces with hundreds of kills.

The mathematical equation that ushered in the atomic age was discovered by an unknown Italian dilettante two years before Albert Einstein used it in developing the theory of relativity. Olinto De Pretto, an industrialist from Vicenza, published the equation E=mc2 in a scientific magazine, Atte, in 1903. There are lots of unsung scientists in world, Tesla being a very good example. Never losing a wingman is indeed something to be truly proud of.

I'd love to read "Blond Knight of Germany" I'd find it very interesting. I'm I to understand that Hartmann's "hundreds" of kills were not padded lop-sided contests ? He didn't rack up many of his numbers by downing the equivalent of airborne horse carts ? It was mostly done against an even match ? Hundreds of times ? I know a kill is a kill. Was Hartmann dozens of times better than Yeager ?
