Ronaldo (R9) is the best striker since Pele. In the modern era only Messi is a better player. His knee was a ticking time bomb as it was always going to explode due to the knee cap’s lack of support with the surrounding ligament that he was born with. With his rapid speed and quick twists and turns he put immense pressure on the knee (it would “dance” when he ran), so it was only a matter of time before it would pop. Had he been a slower player it’s quite likely the knee would have remained in place.

That 1 player is a lot more impactfull in the field, can create chance like noone else and read the game better than anyone which ages like fine wine , AND he doesn't get injured even though the whole madrid defence have been chasing him with axes and shotguns for years. I think Messi and Ronaldo would have been in the GOAT debate even if they had retired 5 years ago. Just think that both had 5 Ballon d'Ors by the end of 2017. In theory, they were a bit unlucky to play at the same time since Messi finished second in all 5 of Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or years, and Ronaldo finished second to Messi 4 times. So in theory (everything else held constant [unrealistic]), Messi would have 13 Ballon d'Ors (including 10 in a row) today if Ronaldo didn't exist, and Ronaldo would have 9 Ballon d'Ors if Messi didn't exist.

This is all very well, but stats are not everything. There are many displays of talent that never show up in the stats. You would have to count playmaking, dribbling, one-on-one duels, not to mention discipline and professionalism. Flair and magic are very hard to quantize. I would argue that Ronaldinho would have been a worthy contender in this contest. I'm not sure what his stats were, but the things he did were just amazing. Players usually reach reach their prime between 25 and 28 years old, when they're physically at their height but have also acquired a certain level of maturity, so this comparison at age 22 really doesn't say a whole lot. It would be interesting to see what the outcome was at age 25. As in the fable of the tortoise and the hare, how you reach the finish line determines the outcome much more than how you start.

Only obstacle for Ronaldo Phenomenon in his career to be the GOAT was his own body. His bad knees and hyperthyroidism did what the toughest defenders in the world couldn’t. During his few healthy years, before the knee injuries- he was no doubt better than Messi and Cristiano. These two have had a longer career, they are both great, they had the benefit of more protection from referees, the sport has changed quite a bit since the 90’s (mostly for the benefit of the offensive players), their peak lasted longer and at 35+ years they are still playing at great level; but while I recognize that they may be higher in a list of greatest football players than R9, due to their list of achievements, which are many especially after such a long career playing at great level in top winning teams- still based on pure talent and performance, in my opinion R9 in his initial run was a better player. Nobody knows what he could have achieved if those knee injuries never happened. He could have peaked at 26-30, being a more effective No. 9, perhaps he could have won at least one more World Cup, won the UCL, etc.,
