Grass is a type of plant with narrow leaves growing from the base. Their appearance as a common plant was in the mid-Cretaceous period. There are 12,000 species now. [1] A common kind of grass is used to cover the ground in places such as lawns and parks. Grass is usually the color green. That is because they are wind-pollinated rather than insect-pollinated, so they do not have to attract insects. Green is the best colour for photosynthesis. Grasses are monocotyledon herbaceous plants. They include the "grass" of the family Poaceae, which are called grass by ordinary people. This family is also called the Graminee, and includes some of the sedges (Cyperaceae) and the rushes (Juncaceae). [2] These three families are not very closely related, though all of them belong to clades in the order Poles. They are similar adaptations to a similar life-style. With around 780 genera and around 12,000 species, [1] the Poaceae is the fifth-largest plant family, after the Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae. [3] With around 780 genera and around 12,000 species, [1] the Poaceae is the fifth-largest plant family, after the Asteraceae, Orchidaceae, Fabaceae and Rubiaceae. [3] The true grasses include cereals, bamboo and the grasses of lawns (turf) and grassland. Uses for graminoids include food (as grain, sprouted grain, shoots or rhizomes), drink (beer, whisky), pasture for livestock, thatching thatch, paper, fuel, clothing, insulation, construction, sports turf, basket weaving and many others. Many grasses are short, but some grasses can grow tall, such as bamboo. Plants from the grass family can grow in many places and make grasslands, including areas which are very arid or cold. There are several other plants that look similar to grass and are referred to as such, but are not members of the grass family. These plants include rushes, reeds, papyrus and water chestnut. Seagrass is a monocot in the order Alismatales. Grasses are an important food for many animals, such as deer, buffalo, cattle, mice, grasshoppers, caterpillars and many other grazers. Unlike other plants, grasses grow from the bottom, so when animals eat grass they usually do not destroy the part that grows. [4] This is a part of why the plants are successful. Without grass, soil may wash away into rivers (erosion). Almost every habitat and biome on our planet has some type of grass as its resident. That’s a lot of ground to cover! Grasses come in all shapes and sizes. Some variations of grass species include: turf grass, wheat, rice, corn, sugarcane, and even bamboo. When grass takes root and grows beneath the soil, it acts as an anchor for all the loose soil and sand. Grass helps trap water by storing it in their roots and blades. It also cleans air through the process of photosynthesis and keeps your yard from eroding away due to rain and wind. Grass blades absorb and disperse the sun’s rays and prevent the ground from absorbing and storing the sun’s radiant heat. In turn, this makes your house cooler by making the surrounding ground cooler. Grass cover can keep the ground cool at temperatures anywhere between 30 - 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Grasslands make up most of the Earth and are actually some of the largest ecosystems in the world. It’s estimated that 20 - 40 % of the Earth is covered in grassland. Not to mention around 800 million people depend on grasslands for agriculture and their livelihood. Due to their biological makeup, palm trees are technically classified as a very tall grass. Grasses are monocots, monocots are classified as having one seed and fibrous stems. Palm trees fit these qualifications, but due to their large size, they are often categorized as trees. Scientists have managed to find a species of seagrass in the Mediterranean Sea that existed 200,000 years ago. That makes it one of the oldest living organisms to have ever been discovered. A lot of sports requires grass to play on, like soccer, golf, and tennis. The most expensive lawn in the world just so happens to be in England at the Centre Court at Wimbledon. The famous tennis court has around 54 million single grass plants that cover it and requires a lot of maintenance. Grass contains a special pigment, much like flamingos and carrots, that reacts and causes its color to always be green. That special pigment is chlorophyll. During the process of photosynthesis, chlorophyll absorbs blue and red light, and reflects green light, making the grass appear green. Grass has other uses besides as food or for landscaping purposes. It’s also used for construction material, like as thatch for roofs, and the fibers of certain grasses are used to make paper. With the exception of wine, many popular alcoholic beverages are produced using various grasses. Barley, rye, and wheat are all used to make whiskey, while rice is used to make sake. Parties just wouldn’t be the same without grass to make our favorite cocktails.
