exactly. Whatever attacking category you look at Messi is in his own class. Only one in which Ronaldo (and Lewa/Suarez for some time) can sorta match him is goalscoring rate. Ronaldo's legacy is mostly based on the 2007/2008 season and the B2B2B CL. People however tend to forget that Ronaldo was only really decisive in the 2016/2017 CL, in the other 2 his knock-out contribution was way more limited. Also Madrid is still winning trophies without him, whereas Barça without Messi fell off a cliff.

lets talk about assists, up until 2018 messi had 235 assists while ronaldo had 201 assists (34 more than ronaldo) while ronaldo had 55 more goals. then he went to juve and the coach made him play deep and ronaldo couldnt drop down as much he would for madrid and utd. messi had 91 goals in a calender year while ronaldo had 60+ goals for 4 consective. not to mention in 2018 when ronaldo was robbed of the ballon d'or. at 22 messi had double the amount of goals ronaldo had. ronaldo scored his first cl goal in his 30th game. you can look at blank stats and make ur mind up without knowing the full story.

For me, De Boer put it right. I think he's so far ahead of everyone that has ever played and that's not disrespectful to the others but Messi just plays at a different level to them. As a playmaker he's one of the best ever, as a winger he was world class, as a striker or false 9 he was one of the best ever, his passing, finishing, dribbling, free kicks and goalscoring ability are all world class and could be argued as the top 5 ever for all those attributes. Then we break down his career, from 18-23, he was one of the best ever, same again from 24-29 and again from 30-35. Any of those 5 year segments are probably better than most top players ever to play the game. People forget his pressing and how good that was earlier in his career, the fight he had for every ball. Wrap all that up and I think it's inarguable, I understand why people say Ronaldo and he has had an absolutely incredible career but he doesn't have all those attributes and he can't dictate games like Messi.

Just the fact that Ronaldo was able to be named in the same sentence as Messi for so many years just tells you how amazing and incredible Ronaldo was. But at the end of the day the distance between Messi and second place is vast. Messi plays in his own realm above us and all we mortals can do is watch in admiration. Not really, there is a gap from Messi to Ronaldo but it's not as big as you say. They are both extremely talented and have elevated each other extremely well, which is why during their peaks both players were winning awards from each other, if Messi was so far ahead he would have dominated the competition for a long time, and that's not simply the case.

Messi has also only ever missed one penalty in a shootout out of 9 and 8 of those shootouts were with the national team in international tournaments (far more pressure). Ronaldo has had 13 shootouts in his career, but only was involved in 9 since he waited for the 5th penalty 4 times, only to not even see it happen. Ronaldo missed in 2 shootouts. There is also this "myth" that Ronaldo is far better with penalties in big moments (not overall, overall he is better no doubt) and that Messi is "terrible" in big moments because of some misses, while Ronaldo has had the same amount of penalty misses in "big moments" as Messi, which somehow is overlooked. I mean, just this World Cup after Messi missed his penalty vs Poland, everyone again started saying that he couldn't handle penalties, etc. Before the game against Poland he scored a penalty and after that game he kept on scoring every penalty as the knockout stages started and the pressure started to build, including penalty shootouts. Just 2 weeks after people were clowning him for missing a penalty and saying he couldn't do it under pressure, he completely destroyed their argument. And again, like I said earlier, he actually has proven and shown, with stats able to back it up, that he is as cool as, if not cooler than, Ronaldo when it comes to penalties in "big moments/under pressure", yet for some reason he is seen as "terrible" and Ronaldo is seen as "great".

Let's be honest here, Ronaldo might be the 2nd best in the last 2 decades but the gap between them is huge. Messi is far above everyone else. And that has just increased in the last 3 to 4 years. So lets break down Messi's goals contribution this WC. His goal against Mexico its a goal which only a TOP finisher would score. His assist against Netherlands is an assist only a world class Midfielder like Ozil or Iniesta would see.
