Today is the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in the Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples about their perception of him.
Peter correctly says: “You are the Christ.” But Jesus tells them notdisclose it to anyone. Why? Because people expect the promised Christ or Messiah to be a political figure or liberator. In fact, some of his followers share this thought.
Jesus knows the kind of Messiah that he is: as stated in the scriptures, he is a suffering servant. How he hopes they can understand him! To think as God does! In the end, he makes it clear to them and to all of us: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Are we ready to follow?
