This is a beautiful late spring, summer look for wearing a dark or black cocktail dress. Great symmetry in the look. And, it is great to have your tutorials on this platform for we former Goth girls, who cannot quite pull off that look in our 40s+.

I'm 45 (46 this year), and what I've noticed is that as I get older, it's not that I can't experiment as much, as some ageist institutions have claimed. It's that I've settled into my own style and learned the lay of my own features, how they've changed over the years, and what truly suits them. You're not circumscribing, you're actualising. So like, I've learned that anything remotely warm-toned is going to make me look septic, and that "Sentient Patrick Nagel Painting" is my default aesthetic. So I'm having a lot more fun with makeup now than I did in my 20s and 30s, when it was all about throwing half of Sephora at my face to see what stuck.

I'm 52 and I maybe wear eye shadow twice a year (didn't even wear some in my youth, and now I have crepeylids anyway) and I never ever wear dresses because I prefer trousers and also I don't have any occasions to wear dresses anyway, but I still love that look. For me, that wuould be only a bit of brown eye shadow on my lid and as an eyeliner, mascara nothing else, because I'm also not good at make up, but I think it makes myblue eyes pop and it reminds me of the 90s 😊

Hi Sam, the balance is perfection! Messy eyes need perfected skin. When I was younger (oh those grungy days) I did not need concealer and wore yesterdays smudged eyeliner with some "fresh" eyeshadow on top. And it looked stunning. Nowadays I have to tidy up more. But still love dark messy eyes.

You are absolutely right about balance. I think with social media like IG and TikTok makeup looks are taken over the top. There is very much still an art form to those kinds of looks, but everyone loves a wearable, and not overly time consuming look as well. I still love making a statement, but now that I’m in my 30’s, when I do a look I would have done in my 20’s, I feel like I’m just trying too hard. I am still working on striking that balance.

Wonderful to watch an actual experience makeup artist.. most KZbin influencer’s are not makeup artist they follow the KZbin style and all the same applications. When you watch a lot of makeup channels like I do, you get board of the same routine they all have. They all apply blush the same, contour the same, concealer the same and all conform to any new KZbin makeup trends. Plus they push products for payment. Oh Sam, I went looking for a vid from you tonight as I needed your magic to quiet my brain. You being back on KZbin is beyond words. This look is me, late 80s at Uni. Then bar nights when I worked nursing. And yes, that balance could be possible for me at 55! I watched every second. Is it possible to still be a breath of fresh air after all these years? Sam x Me and my sister are a lot like you and yours. I like kohl eyeliner and smudged eye makeup. She likes liquid eyeliner and everything done perfectly. I love our differences. Life would be so dull if everyones style was the same. Love this look!!! I like doing it with dirty greys and muddy greens, they seem to suit me better than browns but it's the same messy look. I'm more of a Teddy Eye Kohl girl myself. 😉This is SO up my alley. I've always preferred Mary Kate & Ashley, Nicole Richie and Tia Mowry's eye makeup but have never really been able to perfect it. This is what I used to see in magazines and on the runway: blown out, smudgy and never perfect. I loved how yours turned out. I've learned the best makeup looks tend to require the least in terms of effort and product.
