I have a feeling his “open” model will be relative.

Fantastic video! It was really interesting to watch, and I'm excited to see Meta's Horizon OS in action.

Hardware-wise pretty much every company has converged on nearly the same idea of standalone VR with passthrough MR. So at least as far as VR headsets are concerned, we’re approaching that smartphone era where the (bi)annual updates won’t be much difference. What I think will be especially will be if optical AR companies start using this. For example, Magic Leap. Not having to focus on the OS as much has the potential to accelerate hardware development. So I have hope that this will benefit that form factor in a subtle way.

Unfortunately all XR standalone titles are effective just that, cellphone games. And when it comes to the PCVR side of it, the XR2 USB-C controller is absolute garbo (no clue why meta even sells a fiber cable, the controller caps out at 2.4 so line noise was never a issue to start with)

The entire point is to expand the meta store, nothing more. Honestly i'm not a huge fan of the Android distro. Way to much is locked off at the root level, forcing the use of Meta's platform. You cant even access the USB without going thro Meta's software (which is why programs such as Virtual desktop are limited to wifi only). Meta is playing the razer and blades live service strat here, which isn't vary consumer friendly.

I have no illusion that meta will block their ecosystem. But if I could at least access a decent OS, SDKs, and UI library outside of Unity. I would be happy-ish.

This just makes me sad steam VR is like barely a contender and that valve still hasn‘t made another headset. I have no interest in unteathered VR

Agreed. Valve I don’t think it’s interested in creating a operating system for all of us. It’s a very expensive and daunting task.
