@Nudgarrobot
@Nudgarrobot 2 жыл бұрын
I don't feel like it's so much dying after EAC as it's frustrating to see it take those backward steps. The platform still seems to be thriving, at least for now, until competition which doesn't include trash like that meets standard and platform compatibility of VRC. Considering that CVR already supports import of VRC's avatars and worlds, has some improvements in a few areas, and has been receiving some more player support since the EAC changes, I do wonder if eventually CVR will improve past VRC and then we could say that VRC is truly dying. But as it is, other VR platforms targeting the same style are fairly underdeveloped in comparison from what I've experienced.

Found out about this the funniest way possible. The same day these articles were release, a KZbinr/twitch streamer RTgames streamed himself trying Metaverse. The people were nice and fun. He became the top comedian as people PAID(with ACTUAL money) to get him there so he can get a t-shirt.(not sure if he got it yet) But he struggled with the UI and exploring. It crashed several times. Its not the graphical fidelity. They also lack any sort of art style. An example most people will recognize: Breath of the Wild looks amazing but it's not the graphics, it's all lighting and effects that make it work. Or another example but this time in VR: Pistol Whip. A rhythm game that uses guns, super polygonal but looks great because of it's style, like the matrix being ripped apart by the beat. How about a VR social app to compare to metas awful app? Try Rec Room. The blocky characters are cute and everything is in a consistent style. Yes, you can have realistic graphics in VR (Half Life, Boneworks, B&S, etc) but graphics aren't everything. Meta's app just has no soul.

The metaverse seems to be the flying car of our generation. Everyone assumed that a virtual worlds would be something that we would go to, but they are impractical, expensive, and more or less pointless. I don't think the problem lies with virtual worlds per se, but an effect of our monkey brains. We can tell when something is off, so when even the slightest bit is off, we're immediately turned off. It'll be several more decades (generations?) before our monkey brains can be convinced the virtual worlds are something we'd actually want to live in. We might get somewhere once we figure out uncanny valley.

Yeah good point. It would be like turning your voice in to a cartoon voice or something. Plus to implement this technology would be pretty expensive. The headsets alone are like $1500, then you would probably need a more powerful laptop/PC plus additional support from IT so it seems like a pretty expensive bit of kit. If companies want to improve their efficiency and productivity they are probably best off simply investing in digitalisation, automation, AI etc. One area where I think it can be useful could be in design work, architecture, interior design, fashion, geology, engineering. One thing I did is the virtual screens. So instead of have 1,2,3,4 monitors IRL you could simply use virtual monitors instead with real life KB and mouse. (I guess technically the monitors are still there they are just strapped to your head and are part of the VR hardware).

The biggest problem with selling the metaverse has been a lack of vision. The Zuck has no imagination beyond taking the real word and translating that into digital space. If I wanted the real world, I would go outside - which I do at least once a day, to the chagrin of my entire neighborhood. If we're really going to try and create an open-world VR setting, then take advantage of the unreal space to create things that can't exist in the real world. Give me wondrous vistas, spaces with non-euclidean geometries, portals to fantastic realms that will never be real on Earth, or at least give me a 3D recreation of Escher's staircase painting to explore. Whats even more insane is that Mark intends to lose more money over the next year in Metaverse. I was discussing this with a coworker today, I watch the market from time to time. Mark is like someone who has a large water tower, turns the spigot on full blast, then says “Ok, so I’m gonna form an ocean with this, and then I’ll walk across it and turn it into wine”. Mark is literally tanking the company, possibly to the point of no return, it’s the most blatant disregard of financial responsibility in the history of tech and business. I can’t see Meta/Facebook recovering, their growth has stagnated, Metaverse/reality labs is a bonfire, and the cherry on top is tanking the company stock and also the companies woes are expected to get even worse over time, and by the end of Q4 their stocks will be even lower. If Facebook/Meta is eventually sold(which is my prediction), or it just limps along to a never ending finish line with Meta, it’s going to make one of the greatest case studies in business history of what not to do. This makes Enron look like a day at Disneyland by comparison.

@@risingphoenixgames6359 The general idea is that, for people who know anything about virtual worlds, the answer has always been 'make a good world, and people might play. Make a fun world you can get RPers interested in, and people might *stay.* ' Does WoW look great? In a way, sure. Does FF14? Yeah, in a more recent way. Are they about being virtual life? Extremely no. They are mmos first, with combat and crafting and other gameplay and all these other features involved. They are in third person with a character you dress up. There is a set reason to come to their worlds, but if you want to do something else, you can put the mmo to the side and do a lot with what limits there are. There are emotes, emotes that you can mix with other people doing other emotes, or combine them with text. There might be other commands like dances. If you hide some ui elements if needed, suspend some disbelief, do some decorating, and have some other people around who are up for the same idea, then yeah, your fc house can be a tavern. Or a haunted house. And when you're done, you can go back to being a mighty healer who argues with friends in game they like. They are basically the opposite of metaverse, who is so desperate to be 'virtual life' in VR they miss even the smallest forest for the trees. The graphics, which could be beaten by second life user content and reek of trying too hard to be the xbox's not-miis but cut in half, give a poor first impression. As far as I know, it requires a vr set to even interact with, and people aren't going to get one just for this. All the reasons they try to pull people in with end in 'but why not just talk on phone/on discord/via (work group messaging program of choice)' or similar. Theres nothing to do to get people interested in sticking around. No one plans cool events in it because there is no one to work with, because the people who want to play in virtual worlds already do. Its called rp-ing in mmos, second life, VRChat, or any of the other programs who either give you options and stand back, or let you build entire worlds from the ground up as long as they aren't illegal.

I think one of the big flaws is the use cases they seem to be targeting, having a virtual meeting with avatars seems to be a step back from existing tools. If I was looking to build something like this with massive resources available I'd look at expanding out from more niche use cases. For example migrating 3d modeling and simulation into VR, so an team of architects and materials scientists could look at a building in 3d and simulate factors like extreme winds or earthquakes, look at the failure points and change materials and run new simulations. That level of visualization could also make understanding the failure points more intuitive to non-experts as they can see it in real time and real scale. You'd have projects where the cost of hardware is a small part of a greater set of project costs.

Sounds pretty neat. But I guess it still wouldn't really need a singular, unified metaverse for that. Specific VR modelling software tailored to the needs of the respective professions may do the trick just as well or even better. The problem of any and all "metaverses" currently in development is that they limit in you in certain ways. They have to streamline, standardize, homogenize things. They dumb it down. That's why metaverse gurus and NFT simps saying that "the" metaverse will contain any and all video games you can imagine is pure fantasy. Games are too different in style, in graphics, in controls, in demands. A or "the" metaverse would inevitably simplify things. Do we want that as gamers? To all games look, feel and sound same-ish? Hell no. We will very likely be better off with game development as individual and diverse as it is now. I just don't see any benefit for us gamers by throwing it all into such a melting pot.
@justindavison5920
@justindavison5920 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, in my perfect world the "metaverse" aspect would be framework and some degree of standardization in connectivity and core code libraries. If it was some version of open source or simplified legal structure for sharing code and software it could also be used for expanding beyond a niche area. For example if scientific level materials modeling was built and had libraries for a range of real world scenarios a game company could license it and use the same libraries to create realistic environment destruction in a game by licensing the existing data. Ultimately I think we are years or even decades from a unified metaverse concept and that assumes it doesn't die on the vine now because the focus is on being everything for everyone first instead of creating real value that inspires other use cases.

The problem with this argument is that VR Chat already exists. It has better graphics, the avatars have LEGS, and it's made for VR so VR clearly isn't the problem. Playstation Home was released back in 2008 and had better graphics. While it didn't support VR it was along the same lines as VR Chat. I'm pretty sure Second Life has better graphics and it was released in 2003, and again, it had the same intention of allowing people to become immersed in a virtual world. In fact, the avatars had LEGS. So, taking that into account, what the fuck does Horizon have that these games don't other than Faceb- sorry, "Meta" stealing and selling more of your data?
