METABO HPT CR36DAQ4M - Metabo HPT (formerly Hitachi Power Tools) now has the first cordless and corded solution for anyone looking for versatility in power sources. MultiVolt batteries work on all the Metabo HPT 36-volt tools, but also works on all 18-volt Hitachi tools. Metabo HPT batteries use 21700 cells and are 2P so they are not overly large but can deliver up to 1,440 watts of power. The battery delivers 4 Ah of runtime in the Metabo HPT 36-volt platform and 8 Ah of runtime in the Hitachi-Metabo HPT 18-volt platform. Cordless or corded is the selling point here. The AC/DC adapter does have a long cord but does include a very large power inverter in the cord that will slightly limit the use of the cord.
Once invested in a tool line, no one ever wants to change battery platforms. That’s why MultiVolt cordless batteries were designed with Hitachi 18-volt tools in mind. Hitachi really wants to let you know that they are not forgetting about everyone who has invested in their tools and Metabo HPT will be expanding on great tools in the future.
The Metabo HPT Reciprocating Saw has 4 speeds. Low: 0-1,700 SPM, Medium: 0-2,300 SPM, High: 0-2,500 SPM, Max: 0-3,000 SPM with each of them having a stroke length of 1-1/4 inches. There is a switch on the side to turn on the orbital action for use with wood or turn it off for more hard materials.
Metabo HPT Reciprocating Saw
Orbital action: beneficial for faster cutting through wood for demolition or other such applications
User vibration production: significantly decreases vibration by incorporating a dual counterweight system
4 stage selector ranging from 1,700 SPM to 3,000 SPM to satisfy cutting needs for various application
Tool can be powered by MultiVolt battery or AC adapter
Metabo HPT Power
Sometimes more volts can equal more power, but we also see that sometimes voltage can be used as a marketing factor. In this case, currently, all Metabo HPT tools are 36-volts. The tools that are in that line are larger tools that could demand more power and with the 21700 cells in the battery packs, it makes more sense to design the tools in this way. But not everyone will want to use the Metabo HPT MultiVolt battery pack with a small impact driver. We have to assume that there is a larger picture in the plan that we are not seeing at this point.
The power of this reciprocating saw is very impressive. When pushed hard, it will eat up batteries faster than you can charge them and that is where the cord is nice to have. When all batteries are exhausted, the corded adapter comes in and keeps you working.

I really like the idea of being able to change it from cordless to corded if need be. Hopefully more manufactures adopt that idea.

We do also, but I fear it takes away sales of batteries from the manufacturer, so they are reluctant to do it.

I have had my 18 volt Nicd Hitachi set for aprox 17 years and I still am using them. Granted 6 years ago the batteries gave out but my set came with the battery adapter for AC power. Now the original adapter has a plug that you attached to the battery charger when you needed constant power. With a 20 foot cord, it's not that bad of a deal. I finally broke down and purchased the 36 volt multi volt platform. I have the 1/2 hammer drill, 7 1/4 circular saw and the sawzall.

ac to dc is called a converter, whereas inverter is for dc to ac. I'm a bit surprised at the size of the converter shown here, but I believe Hitach is doing the right thing by introducing an AC adapter: I think I'll move to Hitachi from Makita.

These tools are expensive, but at least here in Canada these battery packs are VERY affordable. $130 in Canadian monopoly money for an 8.0ah battery pack, I think that might be the best watt hour to dollar ratio of any power tool battery. So silver lining, you spend more on the tool but buying the batteries doesn't really cost an arm and a leg. I think if Hitachi fulfills their lifetime warranties and continues to sell affordable high AH battery packs, there's a winning combo there.

Keep in mind they have a mitre saw in the works along with a table saw now, for someone like me this sort of technology is a godsend, transformer on the cable or not, keep in mind in the domestic side of carpentry and sometimes on site you only need to have your mitre saw or table saw out for 5mins to perform your cuts ect. rather than looking for a power source and faffing about running cables everywhere you can pull them out the van do your work and be gone. maybe there isn't power on the job, you can crack on regardless. You've got no running costs on a generator either or it taking up room in the van. And days where your going to be set up for extended periods of time you can go corded no issue.

Solid review, love the channel 👍....I was hopeful that the dual Voltage would be perfected. Ah, no. We definitely can't have the "box " being dragged around framing homes..nice try but no cigar......that load cut out , stopping the saw sucks in real world use... everyone pushes hard on a sawzall, right or wrong,it's what guys do....

Joe Framer “ that’s what guys do “ lol dude no. You fry the blade then no matter how hard you push you are going nowhere with not blade teeth. But you’re Joe Frame aka slam n jam . I’ve also pushed hard with fried blades but don’t waste your time on steel or especially hardened steel . Get another sharp blade and cut on . Common sense.

I’m a Makita man, even have some of the new 40volt tools and couldn’t be happier. But I am now becoming a Hitachi man because of this set up. These 36volt tools are heavy but I’m a big guy and don’t mind. My coworkers don’t like the weight so much but they are little. I just ordered this saw, another battery, and the AC converter today. Thankfully it’s all been around long enough so that I could afford it all, especially getting everything off of EBay. I just got the 21° 36volt framing gun, it’s very heavy and only holds one slide of nails, but it is a godsend. Thank you for these reviews and thank you Hitachi for competing for #1!

Metabo doesn't stand behind their tools. This saw has a problem with the chuck, if the blades brake good luck. Chuck is also very difficult to use. Metabo doesn't stand behind their mistake. I had 3 drills all fail within a year. Metabo says the basically warranty only good if you don't use the tool. Warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear. Great until products fail within a year. Reciprocating saw was poorly engineered, this junk was barely used and Metabo ignores the issue.
