It only works with metal, non metals aren't surfaced with free ions(charged species), so they prefer to not react But In displacement rxn, Metal always try to overthrow lesser reactive metal ( according to reactivity series )

Most of metals have high specific gravity for example iron 7.8,copper 8.7 lead 11.3, mercury 13.6, gold 19.3. Exception are sodium and potassium both of which have less gravity less than 1. Hope this information helps you.
