Follow along as I try and figure out how to install foam boards in our metal garage!

I used an industrial adhesive a friend got for me and then I used gorilla duct tape and did all the seams worked good edit: I also ran 1 inch wide metal banding from side to side along the roof to support the panels

You can use self drilling metal screws and bailing wire pulled tight to support the panels instead of the wooden perlins. It's cheaper and just as effective.

I think I would apply adhesive out of a five gallon bucket with a 9" roller onto the metal itself, using an extension pole. I would also put a smaller amount of the adhesive on the panels themselves, staying away from the edges so that they would be easier to handle and position.

I had not looked at that yet. In part 3 I did find the best way yet to hold these panels on. Double sided tape has worked the best.

@@southernyankeehomestead3230 I hope that works out for you, because I don't trust tape long term. Two potential points of failure; one on each side; each exposed to a different material with a membrane in between. But it's cleaner to work with than adhesives, so that's a plus. I personally like heavy duty mastics that I can apply with a roller or a commercial grade caulking gun with the big tubes. Good luck.

Take some 1X2" wood strips and put them every three or four feet apart and make sure they cover both the end pieces lay them flat take some aluminum metal strips attach them to the wood strips in two places maybe 2" apart then screw them to the metal supports with may be one sheet metal screw with a fender washer make them snug but not real tight as the aluminum will expand during the heat and contract when it is cold in that way you can support the insulation and it can't go anywhere and they will not be able to sag. Just a thought? I always enjoy anyone that try's something for the first time and succeeds?

The wood strapping has worked well for the roof so far and I've found getting the panels as tight as possible makes them stay in place better.

You must use adhesive made specifically for foam. If you use anything else it not only will not glue the foam board to the metal but will eat or dissolve the foam!

And clean the surfaces to be taped with rubbing alcohol. Then over a couple of years of intense heat, the glue dissolves and the tape peels.

You maust also use temperature rated adhesive as well.

Thanks for the video! My metal building is supposed to show up in two weeks, I’m having the installers put in roof insulation but I will be adding the wall insulation myself and this is very helpful

Did you spec the uprights on four foot centers so your panels will fit after trimming a nominal amount off of one side? Many of these bldgs' uprights come 5' centers or less.

The uprights are on 5 ft centers. So I end up cutting about 10" strips to fill the gaps. And 4 feet on center would only give you 3' 10" in between the studs. So you would still have to cut some.

Have you measure the difference in temperature from outside to inside. You have the best videos for me. Soon my shop will be done 30x40 any advice welcome

The difference is noticeable but I have not ran a thermometer in there yet. Now that I've got most of the insulation in a 1500 watt space heater will bring the building up in temperature enough that I'm not sure I want to put a wood stove in it now.

@cae2024 in a later video I used a different method for hanging the sheets (double sided foam tape) which made things go a lot easier. There is a small gap behind the panels and I have had no problem with condensation on the inside. But I also run a dehumidifier in there. With our southern air I'm pulling a 5 gallon bucket of water every day out of the air.

Do you need an air gap between the metal sides and insulation?

You do need an air gap and realistically the metal is not flat and the adhesive has not stuck like I would have expected on the walls. The roof is free floating on both layers. I've got another idea or 2 coming up this winter when it's cooler in the garage.

My experience glueing these sheets up was a year later the glue still holds the foil to the building but the foil let go from the insulation board. Same result!

That is 100 percent true. The foil backing has much less adhesion to the foam than the glue does to the foil/Mylar backing. Strip the foil off in spots where you need the glue to stick

Foil should be on the outside the other side glues fine.

Would have been easier/better to hang the insulation on the outside of the studs/ posts tape to sael then hang the metal sidings... Over ten years now. No problems.

How did you figure out how many pieces you was going to need?

I figured the surface area. So 10 foot sides at 40 foot figures to 800 square foot (2 sides) then add another 480 (10x24x2 front and back) for 1280. I did the same for the roof but don't remember the exact number so we will say 600 square foot for a total of 1880 square foot. I then rounded up to 2000 for waste and errors. Each sheet is 4x8 or 32 square feet. So 2000÷32= 62.5 sheets. Round up to 65 for an even number of 2" and then add 20 sheets (600÷32 = 18.75 sheets) of 1" for the additional space in the rafters.

I'm considering foam board as an option for my metal building too. How has it held up against the heat this summer so far?

Well it hasn't even been a year and I haven't completed the installation so I'm going to say it's been fine. I have no complaints.

Just a couple weeks ago I finished the insulation. There will be a video coming out on that as well as another addition inside the building in the next couple weeks. As far as the insulation itself. Honestly I went too cheap on it. Doing it again I would use rigid foam not the foil back Styrofoam (like the cups) and as far as sticking it to the building the 3m double sided tape is the way to go. The spray adhesive is worthless. If you are going this route get a cheap table saw off marketplace. You are going to destroy it with the insulation regardless of the type. Spray foam is your friend. There are all kinds of gaps in the corners, at the base, and throughout the building. Also depending on your climate (we're in the south with high humidity) a dehumidifier is going to be required. We pull a five gallon pail of water out at a minimum of once a month. And when we do it next time we won't be doing a full metal building. We will do stick construction with metal paneling. I'll be doing a video on that someti.e next year. Still gathering data.

where did you get the doublesided 2" at? I keep finding it but with markings, I dont want the inside of my garage to have markings all over the walls

I've done a couple different ways. I think I cover it in part 3. But to save you some time I ended up using 3m double sided tape and that's worked the best so far.

I'm going to make some assumptions here because I'm not sure which seams you're referring to. Because everything was 5 foot (ish) inbetween the beams I just lined everything up so when I come to tape the seams it's a straight shot.

I did. I also used 3m tape. I think the issue is there might have been fine dust from manufacturing that prevents the tape from sticking. You can see more in the other parts. I think we're up to 3 or 4 videos now on this.

Why did you split them in 2 and not use single piece?

I had to split them because there's a lip on the metal that's running the length of the building. Without cutting them in half there isn't enough flexibility in the insulation to run it over the perlins while bowing it to fit under the lip.

Yes. If you look back WAY back in the beginning one of our first videos was corned bear. Our primary source for red meat is venison. Occasionally a bear will walk out during our long and overlapping hunting season. So why not?

@@southernyankeehomestead3230 I had no idea Bear meat was edible. I live in Australia, so that's a new thing to me to be honest. I'd definitely try it if I could. How does it compare to beef ?

@tonymontana897 flavor wise it's closer to pork than beef. But ech bear has a little different flavor depending on its diet. Some can be quite gamey (funny after-taste if gamey isn't in aussie lingo). You do have to make sure you cook it well done though (165 f or 74 c) do to a high possibility of tricinosis in omnivores and carivores.

@@southernyankeehomestead3230 Interesting mate. Actually, "Gamey" would be something us Aussies would say haha. We do have a tendency to add an "ie" or "ey" or just "y" after a word. Example. You guys say Bikers. We say Bikies. Electrician = Sparky Tradesman = Trady Refrigeration Tech = Fridgy etc. You'll be surprised how much in common we have despite us being down under lol. @tonymontana897 I've traveled a little and have found that the same words don't always mean the same thing. Ie pissed... here it's anger... britan, it's drunk. As well certain customs don't transfer well... I was in a bar in Darwin in the late 90s when I found out you don't slam your shot glass upside down after a shot... here in the states it's custom... apparently at that time it was "down with the queen"... we did manage to avoid a bar fight but it cost us a lot of shots!

Where'd you get that insulation?

Most building supply stores can order it. Lowes and home depot were no help but 76 lumber as well as ABC supply locally were able to order it but I found these particular panels through a direct dealer with the manufacturer on Marketplace.
