How to make castings in the home foundry using single sided (not split) patterns. Patterns which are not required to be symmetrical are much easier to mould and you have the choice of placing the pattern in either the cope or the drag. I would normally place the mould cavity in the drag or bottom box of the flask but just for fun I tried putting the pattern and therefore the mould cavity in the cope or top box. I was interested to see if allowing the mould cavity to fill from the bottom up would create a better casting with less porosity and better surface finish. I would like to thank the many mentors who I have learned from over the 8 or so years I have been messing around with DIY foundry work in my home shop. These include, but are not limited to, SWDweeb, Olfoundryman, Sandrammer, Luckygen1001, Tubalcain, Myfordboy, WindyHill Foundry, Andrew Martin and Paul's Garage. Veg Oil Guy is good too if your into lost wax casting.
