Metal detection is actually quite heavilly regulated in France. Since you live on a chateau it would be considered a place of historical importance and you do need to ask authorisations and to be supervised by an archeologist. Anything you find of high historical importance can be claimed by the state (legally you have to tell about anything you do find). If you did none of that, this video is a legal proof of illegal activity, kind of driving at 200km/h on the road and putting it on youtube, maybe fun but illegal...

Metal detecting is so much fun! I live on the east coast of South Florida. After a hurricane, it's awesome to go metal detecting on the beach. Many things wash us from old ship wrecks, gold, coins, jewelry, etc!

Don't feel too bad Ian. A couple of months ago, I was detailing the interior & exterior of my Mini SUV, and almost every single freaking time that I leaned back into the back seats to clean, I whacked my head off the dang door frame! You can tell that I don't have to get in and out of the back usually lol. You'd have thought the added knots on my head would have given me some extra protection. But, alas, I think it just kept making my head slightly higher to ensure I'd keep banging it!!!!! uugghh. Felt like Charlie Brown, and the car was Lucy & the football! Hahahahaha!!!

Its amazing what you guys have found!! Imagine the little trinkets that could be around the old fountain and around the old garden beds you both uncovered and where you guys uncovered the terrace area and in the moat!! That place housed so many meetings and gatherings and was a bustling hive of activity everywhere. So many moments good and bad. So much history. You might find older items in the other buildings. Any pottery or items you don't recognize, consult with the department of Antiquity or Archeologist before removing or cleaning. Unless it is on the surface, leave the item in situ and let them investigate.

That looks a Fiat Spider! My mom ordered one from the factory in Italy in 1966 and had it shipped to New York in the summer of 1967. It was a red convertible with slanted front lights. Our family drove from Vancouver, BC,Canada to New York to pick it up. On the way back we went to Expo 1967 in Montreal. Fond memories.
